It's January, 2025 and I'm happy to see that Walmart in Palm Springs is already using COMPOSTABLE bags in the produce section, instead of plastic bags. The California ban on plastic bags in grocery stores doesn't go into effect until 2026, so I glad to see that our Walmart in Palm Springs is ahead of the curve. Compostable bags are supposed to be much better than plastic bags for the environment.

Colorado charges 10 cents per plastic bag at all stores. I bring my reusable bags to the grocery, but often forget at places like Target. So, I just put the items back in the cart unbagged and them load them into my car.

I remember years ago while shopping at Pavilion's in West Hollywood, and meeting Johnny Mathis at the check out counter! He had his arms full of vegetables... without any plastic bags. Johnny proceeded to drop all his produce on the counter and then putting everything in a mesh bag after paying! Nice guy, and that was the second time I had met him! Johnny remembered ME from our first meeting 2 weeks prior at Gelson's!! Great memories! 🤗

Here in Pennsylvania our Walmarts and larger chain grocery stores started changing over to a “no plastic” ban. Then Covid hit. It all went down the drain. I think they are now slowly starting to change over again. Not very many places are on board right now. It’s a slow process and I’m hoping we eventually get there.

Here in NJ we have a plastic bag ban that's been in effect for a couple of years. Everyone has to bring their own bags to the grocery store. The store will sell you a cloth bag if you forget to bring your own. Drug stores, restaurants, Home Depot, etc will give you a paper bag if you purchase something that requires a bag. We also have a plastic straw ban. Straws are made from paper or compostable material.

That's pretty cool 😎 Steve. Regular plastic bags usually fall apart before you can put your stuff in the car. 🤷‍♀️ And they aren't wanted at recycle plants. ♻️ which is crazy to me. A friend told me, in her area they only want cardboard boxes. So, everything else goes to the landfill. Something different needs to happen. Thanks for letting us know about these bags. 😃

That's so awesome. In my town we banned, plastic bags last year and no styrofoam containers like take away ones at restaurants. Also they use utensils made from bamboo that I know of now. Because they banned plastic utensils. You have to wonder if the plant based alternatives were around for so long, then why not use those...even before the bans...

Hey Steve, I haven’t seen these yet,but then I do my large Walmart shopping through the grocery app, so maybe they are not using them here yet. If they are compostable and are good for the environment, it sounds like a “win-win” for the Farmers and they have a hard enough time finding ways to ends meet. Natural fertilizers are better for the environment as well as those who buy their food products. I’m a “Farmer’s kid” from way back my Dad depended on making His own fertilizer with cow and chicken waste. Our veggies always tasted better than store bought and lasted longer. Thanks for sharing this video Steve it’s eye opening. Blessings to You and Jim! ❤❤❤

That's really a fantastic thing!! Completely bio-degradable and even the possibility to be used as a kind of fertilizer! Very smart find! Here in Belgium, in all shops plastic bags have been banned already a couple of years ago, gradually first and then practically completely: if necessary you can still by a stronger, lasting, re-usable kind of plastic bag at a price like 50 cents or 1 euro (=US dollars 60ct. or $1.20). In stead of (regular) plastic bags or these new, great compostable bags like you have there now! (and we unfortunately don't have yet!), we get free (recycled) paper bags (for bread, fresh fruits and vegetables). To pack (also larger) groceries, we use those reusable plastic bags (we generally have to bring from home), carton boxes (freely available in most stores/supermarkets) or "heavy-use", big cotton bags (my personal choice), also generally brought from home (and that can be bought quite cheap, max. $2 or $2.50 in many grocery shops and supermarkets). Belgium could be sometimes considered as the European Union's🇪🇺 kind of "California" (environmentally wise) I guess, as you know our capital, Brussels, is also the "D.C." of the EU! So supposedly we need to set "an example"!Well, have a nice day/evening/night, Steve!👋 from 🇧🇪

about 15-20 years ago when I was living in West Hollywood CA the grocery stores got rid of the paper bags in favor of the plastic ones. But when I inquired about that with the store manager, he told me that in fact, the plastic ones were not biodegradable, but the paper ones were. He offered no explanation why they got rid of the paper ones. so I will see if those green bags you have have made their way to Atlanta!

Thanks for sharing that Thomas. When I lived in West Hollywood, I shopped at the Mayfair market on Santa Monica Blvd. I think the name of the store is something different now, but I used to love shopping there because it was just a couple blocks from my apartment and I could just walk. I would’ve thought that West Hollywood would’ve been very environmentally friendly. 🤔

That is such a good idea. We need those for garbage bags, or anyplace it's a single use bag. Here in 🇨🇦 they have banned a lot of shopping bags but still have regular plastic produce bags, so hopefully, they get going. We have been learning to take our reusable shopping bags. This year, it will coat $2 per bag in most places if you need the stores shopping bags. Now, if they could do a lot more towards product packaging. Baby steps.

I shop Aldi, a lot, and thankfully, I can reuse my bags there. By the time we move to California, we will be ready for that new law. An easy transition. It's part of California Recycle SB 1383, which went into effect in 2022, and jurisdictions were given until January 1, 2025, to put it into effect. Stores in California will only be allowed to provide pre-checkout bags that are compostable or recycled paper bags. Vons has used them in their produce area for many months. The bill also requires CalRecycle to adopt regulations to ensure that at least 20% of edible food that is thrown away is recovered for human consumption by 2025. This means commercial customers may need to donate edible food to food recovery organizations. So much of the produce is tossed in the trash by stores. Our FDA Food sharing program in our area (normally containing canned goods, frozen and bagged food like beans, rice and nuts, etc.,) now receives more produce like apples, oranges, pears, etc., to give away. (I've noticed less produce on our shelves in our area, including Walmart so stores are probably cutting back and holding off on putting the freshest produce on the shelf - and I won't buy wimpy lettuce, etc.) I believe Calif. is the first state to eliminate non-compostible plastic bags mandatory. Of course the consumer is paying for this with increased prices.

Always a good thing as I detest plastic bags. Walmart is one place that I refuse to shop under any circumstance and have not been into one in nearly 15 years. Walmart is a dumping ground for hospital patients, mental patients and a hotbed for criminal elements. Will stick with Target for discount shopping. They still refuse to take Apple Pay so that they can vacuum up customer data.

So in CO the stores no longer give you bags to put your groceries in. You have to bring your own bags or you can purchase a bag from the store. This applies to a typical grocery store and Wal-Mart. They no longer have plastic bags. And the option to purchase is either a paper bag which is very flimsy and usually tears before getting out of the store. Or to purchase a cloth bag from the store. The price ranges anywhere from 10 cents to 99 cents. It's quit frustrating to go in the store and then realize I forgot to bring a bag with me. So the my choice is buy a bag or carry everything I purchase. So needless to say I have a ton of cloth bags now because I always forget to bring them along.
@steveinpalmspringsca

Same here, Tessa. Our store started that a few years ago, so I’m finally in the habit of bringing my own cloth bags in lol! 😆 I always keep them in the car so if I forget to bring them in the store, I just bring the groceries out without a bag and then put them in the cloth bags. It’s definitely hard to break a cold habit, isn’t it? 😂

As a kid growing up in the late 60's/early 70s, the only option at grocery stores was paper bags. Then, a bunch of people decided that we were going to destroy all the forests and so plastic was the way to go. There was a period where you could choose paper or plastic. When you said paper, people looked at you in utter contempt. Then it was all plastic. Now, plastic is out because of the fish, and climate change, and whatever. My Grandmother said if I lived long enough, we'd go back to paper, and she was right. For many reasons, so glad to live in Texas and not CA.

Well I am standing in line and the lady in front of me was tearing a strip off of the cashier because she didn't want to pay the 75cents. Making quite a scene. Anyway most of you know how quiet and shy I am and I don't usually say much. Lol She turned to me and said well what do you think. Dear Steve, Pailions and Ralphs and other grocery stores have had these compostable plastic bags for at least the past 3 years. Walmart, who has never been concerned with the environment or their employees standard of living, is most likely being forced to start using these bags by the city of Palm Springs perhaps? In any event, if you would patronize other stores and support the wages of workers who are trying to have a decent standard of living instead of the Walmart corporate greed, you would be helping your neighbors benefit. Doing so is what community is all about, especially when you can afford to do so as you have stated.

Hi Alex, sorry you’re not getting my replies! I’m not sure why. It must be something at your end. 🙁

They are not new, maybe at your store. Same bag is used at dog parks for doggie doo-doo. Walmart has the most resistant store to doing away with plastic bags at its stores. Why do they put only 3-6 items in their bags and you walk out with 20 plastic bags. I bring my own re-useable ones.
