“UTMB is not conquerable by a human, it's conquerable by the human spirit. And you need to harness the spirit in order to accomplish the goal.”
Jim Walmsley discovered ultra trail running through an unconventional journey. After participating as a track athlete in high school and college, he transitioned to the military, serving in a nuclear missile silo in Montana. He was eventually dismissed, leading him back to running, where he emerged as one of America's top ultra trail runners.
Following impressive records at the Western States 100, Jim sought a new challenge: the infamous Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB). Despite initial failures, he committed to enhancing his mindset and training, bringing him to relocate to France with his wife, Jess.
In 2023, Jim achieved a historic victory, becoming the first American man to win UTMB in a thrilling mid-race twist. He now joins the ranks of great American women who have triumphed in the race before him.
Watch Jim’s journey to the UTMB podium and beyond in the feature-length documentary: WALMSLEY THE FILM presented by Wahoo + HOKA.

François crewing him (while he himself couldn't run that year because of an injury) really shows how great of a sport that is and was a highlight of the film to me. Just two of the best athletes in the sport supporting and inspiring each other!

Loved the whole film but the moment when he acknowledged the American female runners who have won the race before him saying "They paved the way" was an absolutely emotional peak of the film. You don't hear male athletes say that every day. Fantastic.

Watched this and it motivated me to start running. I found the Strava app because of this film.. and I love it..been running for around two months now and I feel amazing. I was a smoker until last year and I don't think I have ever ran a mile in my life before. I wasn't able to. I am getting faster and going further very consistently. This documentary changed my life. Much appreciation and respect. I am addicted to running now.. gets me more high than weed ever did.

in that scene I could see myself in 2022 when I was so close of giving up because of stomach aches and cramps. I said to my partner I was going to leave race but she moved me out of the station and put me running in front of her. She was a huge part of my way to Chamonix. It was so inspiring watching a giant like Jim with the same kind of doubts as me, and be able to push forward.

Don’t forget guys, life itself is an endurance sport. I’m at a very low point in my race at the moment and am grateful to have athletes like this that remind us that the point isn’t to breeze through to the finish, but to fight your doubt and your inner demons all along the way and keep pushing forward. This is an amazing story about an amazing athlete and human being.

The "I'm not sure I'm going to be able to hold them off" gets me teared up every time I see it. Dude has NOTHING be apologize for and yet, he feels like he's letting people down. Amazingly touching. Any athlete who's been in sport long enough knows exactly how he's feeling in that moment and it really does bring on a wave of emotion.

The thing I really admire about Jim is his "reality", tenacity & humility in the learning process. The reason American men hadn't won UTMB was the arrogance they bring to EVERYTHING. Jim listens, learns, thinks about his weaknesses & how to correct them. He's methodical. He takes lessons from every failure & persists. In that regard, he's a complete human. Couple that with his lack of entitlement & his desire to be the best he can be & you get this guy. Humble, thoughtful, persistent. He might not always win the race but he's winning at life.
