Walnut Hollow is a great brand for getting into wood burning. They have an extensive product line of burners and wood options. In this video, I’ll be reviewing the Walnut Hollow Versa Tool. I’m going to burn a small project using different tips and explaining the pros and cons of the tool.

We had to have a tree taken down and when I saw the large piece that was salvaged, I had the tree guys set it aside for me. I've never done any wood burning and I picked this product up yesterday. Now that I've seen your tutorial/review, I think I'm ready to take on this project. Thanks!!

@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If you want deeper cuts, a wire tip kit is better. It gets hotter and offers tips that have more precision. And you can do an epoxy resin with it, but a dremel works much better. Here's a video where I combine both, wood burn and dremel/resin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn3NaWZ3hM6pY5o

Oh sheesh! i can't believe they sold it that way. I wonder if pliers would work? It may cause more damage, so I'm not sure if it would help. Or it me be stuck in a way that even if you got it out, you may not be able to screw in a different tip later. That really sucks!

If you're just trying it out you can use a pencil to cover the backside of the paper where the letters/images are and then lay the paper on your piece where you want it. Then trace the lines of the letters/images to transfer the graphite to the wood.

Did your nibs oxidize after use. If so, how did you get them back to their original state, without having to buy new nibs?
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters Жыл бұрын
They do oxidize, but it's not something that will hinder the burning process. There's really no need to get them to a shiny state later. You can use a polish to help clean them, but they won't be shiny anymore and that's okay; they'll still work. amzn.to/3N2z5AA

Hi, would you have any idea on this? I want to purchase a 26 piece alphabet set. Are the sets universal, and any will fit this burner? or do the ones that say they fit with the Plaid burners, will those fit with this? thank you in advance
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters Жыл бұрын
Hey Timothy, I can’t say with certainty since I haven’t used any plaid products, but I have bought alphabets from Michael’s and they did fit in my walnut hollow and my Truart. They also fit in those soldering wands too, so it seems like the thread size of these brass tips are all the same.

On your other tool, there was a protector on the barrel part that allowed you to get close to the tip with your fingers, does that have a name or is it something you DIY?
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters Жыл бұрын
Hey JL, I’m not sure which other tool you’re referring to. Was it in this video? I haven’t DIYed any setups on the tips, but I’m not sure which pen you’re talking about.
@tommytitmouse
@tommytitmouse Жыл бұрын
a cheap alternative to what your asking about , is to buy a homebrew beer-making jar cork roughly 1.3/4 in deep and about 1.1/2 wide . The one I use has a very slight taper also on it. Then drill a hole through the middle and file or remove enough cork to fit the Pen with a tight fit , then you have a very cheap Heat proof pen holder.
@tommytitmouse
@tommytitmouse Жыл бұрын
Hi I live in the UK and I have just bought a new one of these. I use a voltage reducer to use the 120 v , as our voltage is 220/240 so the reducer is necessary otherwise it would burn out the pen itself altogether . I find that with this, there doesn`t seem to be any "varied" increase in heat through the dial. It's either hot , or it's not burning at all . I have tried increasing the dial from zero slowly in increments but before I can get it to burn at all , it has to be on the max of the RED section . I don`t think its anything to do with the Voltage reducer as I`ve heard other people complain that the Heat dial doesn`t work for them and they live in the USA so I`d like to ask you do you also get next to no heat variation via the dial, or where do you start seeing a burn happening on the dial section colour on the n you use..?
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters Жыл бұрын
Hey Reno, I’m really not sure if that’s a common issue when using the reducer. The one I have has more of a heat than all or nothing. It gets hot at different levels. It’s possible you may have a faulty unit. I would reach out to Walnut Hollow and check. They may have some experience with this issue and know how to resolve it.

Hey Philip, It could be stripped. I stripped one of my brass tip wands before. I didn't let it cool down before removing the tip, and the metal warped. Then I wasn't able to get any tips into the wand.

More cons: the cord is too stiff and too short, greatly effecting range and fluid motion. The temp controller is bulky and about 1 ft from the burner, where it gets hung up on things. The actual portion you hold is girthy and creates fatigue. The wee tool rest is pretty much useless unless screwed or taped down. Luckily it's not high priced.

Mine was a dud. Worked OK for one session then became useless because it would not heat up as per first use. This tool is actually not a good first tool for a beginner because it will give a wrong impression about speed and capabilities you have in this art. Thus it will turn people away from something they may develop a great affinity for. Unfortunately all the entry level tools are pretty much crap.
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that yours was a dud, it probably happens from time to time. Did you reach out to Walnut Hollow for a new one? However, I do think this is a good starter burner for a beginner. Not everyone has or is willing to invest $200 - 500 dollars up front for a wire tip kit when they don't know if they'll like pyrography or if they will only wood burn once in a blue moon. I think people need to adjust their expectations to know going in that a $30 tool won't perform with the same speed and capabilities as a $200 - 500 tool. You can still achieve great things with a brass tip kit if you're willing to put in the time.

It is slower to heat than the wire tips for sure, but I recommend these for beginners since it’s not a huge investment. Mine has lasted for a long time, but I’m sure there are some manufacturing duds.
