There are a lot of options on amazon for buying a beginners wood burning kit. Here are a couple to avoid. The kits that offer 50+ or 80+ pieces are usually cheap and filled with stuff you don’t need. I’m going show you two of those kits in this video and exactly what’s inside.
In my opinion, you’re better off getting a high quality kit from brands that care about the end user even though there may be fewer pieces.

I received my super cheap wood burner as a Christmas gift. The number of items (there were a lot) in the package didn't matter, and with no knowledge of wood burners at all, it was a good way to at least find out if I had any interest in the hobby. Mine is like the one you showed with a plastic dial. It gets hot and it burns just fine. I won't be surprised if it stops working or if the tips break. I'm okay with that. It was enough to be able to try it and find out that I LOVE wood burning. It is so much fun! Had I (or the person who gave me the gift) known who the players were in the community, I would have definitely bought from them and will share that should anyone ask me about burning. I'm sure I will upgrade to something better in the future, but for now my no name, cheaply made, mass produced wood burner is serving its purpose in introducing me to the joy of burning.

#Truth I also asked for one of the cheap Amazon kits for my birthday, and my elder sister bought me one. It is great. No, I don't use a lot of the contents, but have enjoyed experimenting with a few different projects. I would like to upgrade this year, but for now it is fun to use. (BTW - mine does have a brand name on it, and is better made than the one you are using, ie the dial works well.)

It definitely works for a beginner to try burning. And it’s not the end of the world to start with one of these kits. This video was meant to inform those researching what to purchase so they know what they are getting. Several people have messaged me for my opinion on these, so I put together a video about them. For a beginner, it’s enticing to get all those pieces, but there are better kits to buy.

Hi, great info, buyer beware I say - I’m in the U.K. I started out using a cheapo wood burner a couple of months ago, it wasn’t a “kit” as such although it does have a few different tips and stamps included, these burners are ok to have a go to see if it’s something that you’ll enjoy but honestly the wire tip machine that I just bought (2 days ago) is far superior, it’s so much smoother and lighter to use, I always found the “soldering style burners” are heavy to use and you need to press down into the wood (depends on what wood you use I suppose) even though I’m very new to wood burning the results I’ve had so far using the “Peter childs pyrography machine” have been much better quality than my original attempts - invest in a better machine guys, they’re so much fun.

One of the first ones that I purchased earlier this year, was actually a soldering iron that had pyrography capabilities(got it from Lowe's). I did some fairly decent line art stuff with it. My next purchase was a $75(after tax) unbranded one that had a nice collection of mid thickness, wire, screw in nibs. Downside, NO info on what the nibs were called or even what they were used for. Thanks to a couple of your uploads(and some balsam wood that came with the kit), I figured it out. I'm actually still using it. I plan to upgrade to a Burn Master or something in that arena(probably the Burn Master, if just for the name only...🤣).

Thanks so much for the info- I got my first tool today from Michael’s craft and art store, and (luckily) it’s a Walnut Hollow one. It’s a very basic kit, with four tips, a decent metal stand, and a tool with the cord and on/off switch. It was about $16, and looked like exactly what I wanted. I plan on not using any premade stencils, as I draw my own and intend to freehand as much as I can. I make medieval/Viking style axes, spears, etc, and I decorate the wooden handles using a Dremel type tool and then painting into the grooves, sealing it with epoxy or superglue. Takes forever! I saw someone use a woodburner and it got the same effect so quickly and nicely, that I had to try it. I’m giving it a go tomorrow, and decided to check KZbin to see if the tool I got was any good, so I’m glad I found your channel! I’m going to subscribe and use your videos as I progress in my hobbying. Thanks again!

I think I figured these type of kits out. They are actually kits for soldering electronics overseas. My personal opinion is that there are numerous people that are “subcontractors” and do certain electronics assembly at home. They bring in the finished project where it’s checked over and then they are paid by the piece. It dawned on someone that the soldering iron supplies could be sold as wood burning tools. They package them up with various other items and sell them as hobby kits. That’s my two cents worth on the subject.
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters 7 ай бұрын
I agree!! When Amazon started letting overseas manufacturers sell directly to consumers, these types of products started popping up. It’s attractive because there are so many pieces for a small price. And it will get you by for wood burning, especially when you’re just getting started and want to see what it’s all about. There are a ton of hobby kits that are repurposed and sold like this now.

I carve wooden spoons and want to write names on the handles. Is it possible to wood burn names small enough to fit on the handle of a wooden spoon? If so what do you recommend for this. Thanks for any help with this and I just started watching your videos and find them very informative
@Pyrocrafters
@Pyrocrafters 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael! And yes, if you have a fine point tip, it would be a great way to add some small details. Brass tip kits usually come with some type of fine point tip, but you may have to order a special one for the wire tips depending on which one you have. I recommend prepping your handles by sanding, then transferring a template to the handle and then using your fine point to burn it. Keep the heat low and go slow to get nice crisp edges. Thanks for watching!

I would much rather you do a video on telling me WHICH kits as a beginner to buy that doesnt cost anywhere near a hundred bucks because I personally don't want to spend that much on something I don't even know if I'll enjoy.

And that’s why I suggest good quality kits that are in the same price range (and sometimes less expensive) at the end of the video. Chandler and Walnut Hollow offer good quality machines at the same price. They also offer customer support. Many, many people have reached out to me and asked my opinion on these amazon kits, so here it is. They aren’t worth the money in my opinion. If a beginner has purchased one of these kits, it’s not the end of the world. It will still help them learn, but there are better alternatives for the same price.

@@Pyrocrafters I see. Sorry I didn't make it thru to the end. I agree it's a good thing to have customer service and be able to get parts (for anything you buy). Those two points alone I find many people won't think about. I appreciate your reply so quickly!

I've just looked at about a dozen of these kits On Amazon. And every single one of them was made in China. I didn't see a single written review on any of them. They were all checklist of review of build quality and different features. But nothing written.

apart from your view that a branded kit, and the brands respecting the woodburning community, is the only way to go I didn't see anything wrong with the actual kit in use.. you actually said it burned fine????? I'm ok with brand loyalty if that's what people want but I'd like to see why they are no good. i.e. Do not keep a constant temp or do not get to temp quickly etc etc. i can see you do not like that temp dial as you fiddled with it mostly all the time but does it set the temp or not? As regards breaking the tips; how hard are you going to press down on these tips!!! I got a similar kit but with a n LCD display and 1 degree variability. it is still going strong as both a burner and soldering iron. Yes opinion matters but I want to see the reason for the opinions. I'd say get a cheap one (no real loss in monetary terms) and see if woodburning is for you; then buy a brand if it doesn't last.

Hey Alan, my main reason for not liking these kits is that they are bait for getting people to purchase unnecessary junk. 100 piece wood burning kit for $40 sounds like a good deal, but they are filled with crap that isn’t needed in wood burning. You can buy a better quality kit for the same price with more actual wood burning pieces in them that perform better long term. !!!!!!!! As for the functionality, it will get you by if you want an intro to wood burning. It’s not a huge loss when it breaks. My opinion on the low quality comes from message after message after message from people that have purchased these, had them break and want to know what else to buy as a replacement. This video is a direct response to those questions. Don’t buy this kit. Spend the exact same amount of money on a higher quality item. !!!!!!!! I’m not pressing down on these tips. I don’t use this product. I have better ones. This again is in response to others that have had issues with theirs breaking. !!!!!!!!! The point I’m making about the brand is a small one, but still worth mentioning. These are mass produced and sold direct from the manufacturer. As a consumer if you have one product that is poorly made, includes extra junk just to get a sale, and is sold by a company that won’t give you any support vs a product that is higher quality, offers customer support and has more tip options at the same price, wouldn’t you get the second option? !!!!!!!! My advice is and will always be to recommend a Walnut Hollow, Truart or Chandler tool over these. They cost the same. Having or using one these cheap Amazon kits isn’t the end of the world. We’re not talking about life altering choices here. But when someone asks what I think about these, my opinion remains the same. Skip it and buy a brand that actually thinks about the end user. !!!!!!!!! If you enjoy your tool and it works for you, then why does it matter what I think? I don’t like these and I’ll never recommend them, but I don’t need to prove anything to you, especially on your terms. I have my experiences and you have your experiences. If our perspectives don’t align, I’m 100% okay with that. !!!!!!!!

What are you talking about...One has a brand name the other does not. they all do the same, the result comes from the user. what do you expect for so little money what I think is bad about all word burningssets is the rest that comes with it.

You’re entitled to your opinion as am I. These amazon kits are click bait; they offer tons of useless pieces for a low price just to get the sell. It’s better to spend the same amount of money on a brand that actually put some thought into the product. Which is why the brand names are higher quality in my eyes. The amazon kits will get you by for sure, and it’s not the end of the world if you have one; it still burns and it’s not a huge investment. But why waste money on a bunch of junk no one needs, when you can get a better quality machine with better pieces. And I’ve had soooo many people message me after their amazon burner breaks asking me which kit should they buy instead. This is my way of telling people that haven’t made a purchase yet, to just skip the amazon kits all together and go right to the better quality unit. That’s what I’m talking about.

This is a good kit that cost the same as the ones in the video. amzn.to/3cybQgs And it’s not the end of the world to have one of these amazon kits.
