Can we plant the Chandler walnuts at an altitude of around 8000 ft above sea level where we have almost around 3000 chilling hours and temperature remain minus 01 to minus 12 degree Celsius. Moreover we have many other best quality walnut varieties in the said area which thrive well .

Where is this orchard planted? What USDA hardiness zone? Do walnut trees need a very cold winter? Or just a certain amount of chill hours below 40ºF ? Are there varieties of walnut that will produce nuts in a Mediterranean climate? ( I live near San Diego , California USA ) What are your recommendations?

This orchard is located in the city of Bandirma, Turkey. Our city is classified as zone 9. Walnut trees don't need a very cold winter but they need 700 chilling hours. If your area fulfills the chilling requirement then you can surely grow walnuts there. In fact, the highest-yielding walnut orchards in the world are in northern California. You can check southern California's climate and see if it's possible to grow them.

@@WaltreeNursery Thank you for the information. My location is also zone 9 or 10a, but my chill hours are only 150-200. I have one grafted Carpathian walnut tree planted, I bought it as a bare-root 4 years ago and it has struggled. I planted it on a windy sunny hilltop. After the first year it was doing very poorly, so I dug it up to throw it away but decided to replant it in a colder area on a north facing steep slope. Since then it has done much better, at this time (April ) it has come out of dormancy and is bursting forth with new growth and looks beautiful. So, maybe some day it may produce some nuts after an unusually cold winter. Time will tell. :) I think I will try and grow a pecan tree since I believe they require fewer chill hours. I have seen pecans in my area to the east of me and a friend has one in her yard which produces nuts. Although she says the birds get them all.

Merhaba Yunus bey. Maalesef pikan cevizi fidani uretmiyoruz. Pikan lezzetli bir ceviz ama ulkemizde bildiginiz gibi cok yaygin degil ve tuketimi dusuk. Ilerleyen yillarda bu degisir mi kestirmek zor.
