Jon and Meg Kudos, lots of them, to you both. You are Teachers and Educators of what it took for the first people who came to this country, Self reliance,determination and dedication, yes and HARD WORK, was the only way to get the things and life you wanted. Instant gratification is at once both the blessing and curse of our world today. I am thrilled for you and the choices you have made and continue to make. There will always be naysayers, don't listen to those voices. I grew up in an adobe brick home where my father made the brick that our home was built with. The home was approximately 2000 sq, in a Calif. city suburb following all the required codes at the time. You both are showing that your courage and dedication are up to the job, so don't quit. Thanks for bringing us along on the Adventure, Stay safe and God Bless Your Utah subscriber Bill

Your problem with the filter is the location. When you moved the fuel line to the top of the engine you made it almost impossible for the air to be purged from the line. So when you go uphill your fuel line is WAY higher than your fuel pump so the pump is trying to overcome the air and a fuel pump doesnt pump air well. I'm also willing to bet that if you point the front end down hill on a steep downhill the filter will fill more if the engine doesnt stall from the air purging the line. As much as you hate to do it, move your fuel line a couple inches lower than the pump. That will allow the air to rise to the high point, which is the pump, and once fuel is at the pump any air will be purged.

Very interesting idea. I'll look into a new route and give it a shot. Thanks!
@michaelrwilliams54662 жыл бұрын
The size line that was initially there and you replace it with a larger line, it will run but the yes it will also decrease the rated pressure to the engine; the inline fuel filter will not hold enough pressure to keep fuel in the filter. Revert back to the size line that was originally taken off.

Looks like a road to me.
@martinwyke2 жыл бұрын
A larger pipe is not necessarily better because the fuel pump needs to work harder to fill it and keep it full, if it was close to its maximum draw already, you might have pushed it over its limit.

If the tank is a top draw tank, check your pickup inside for cracks and holes. The line should be 1/4 inch. That pump is less efficient at high rpm than at idle. This is due to the speed of the rocker arm actuation to the pump lever. Also make sure your tank vent is allowing air in as u use fuel. Think of it like liquid in a straw when you put your finger on it. Takes very little vacuum to overcome that pump.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. The original line was 5/16 and 1/4 line really had to be forced on which is why I replaced it (again) with the 5/16. It's easy enough to take out the tube and inspect it and even shoot some compressed air though it and see if it holds pressure. There is a vented cap that I'll look at more closely too. I appreciate your ideas. 👍

Air pockets are hard to get out of the filter. Partially pull off the feed line and let air out as fuel gets in with engine off. Your tank is also probably not feeding fast enough, clogged shutoff valve or something.
@In2investing2 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can add an auxiliary lift pump to help pull fuel from tank

As for the degraded teeth on your drive gear, can you not use your welder to build up material and then use the grinder to shape the tooth... Or weld some material to the worn tooth and shape as needed. We used to reface cutting edges on grader blades and refurbished many hard metal parts and I believe that your problem can be solved with a repair vs. a replacement
@MrAmartin82 жыл бұрын
Noticed that when you were showing the filter that the hose seemed a little loose meaning I saw the hose slightly moving on the filter . As Chris said upsizing to larger hose will probably reduce how well the pump will work and if it has a vacuum leak at the hose it will suck air and less fuel . Also is there a check valve on the pick up on the tank . If not all the fuel will gravity feed back to the tanks ...
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Good idea to add a check valve. There wasn't one there originally, but that makes a lot of sense to keep it primed. Let me explain the ID of the hose. The original line was 5/16. I bought 1/4 by mistake when I put the new line on the first time thinking it might make it easier for that mechanical pump.

Hi,possibly the fuel cap is plugged and letting vent into tank, I recently had this type of problem, had to poke a small screw into top of fuel gas cap to enlargen and allow air into tank. Good luck.
@billsemmendinger25922 жыл бұрын
Along Chris's and Amond's suggestions I would check the tank for dirt and garbage. If it is a metal tank a good possibility for rust inside.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, it's plastic and we completely emptied it and washed it in a previous video. Found some mulch at the bottom along with sand and other debris. We did this before replacing the lines and pump. Good thought though. 👍

I wonder if you would do better with metal tracks on the skidsteer? I'm no expert, but seems like you lose a lot of bit with the rubber ones.
@wild1bill19502 жыл бұрын
Rubber hose over the top of motor the hottest area, no insulation, motor warms up, gasoline vapourises in heat = Vapour lock. Move the hose to a lower location. Move the fuel-path to tanks lowest area to pumps lowest area. Away from heat. NO Vapour-lock. Check for GAS tank PRE-FILTER clog
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Makes sense, John. Especially since it takes a good 15 minutes before this behavior. I'll try to re-route the line away from the hot spots and take the low route. I really didn't even move it that far from where it was, and I only did to avoid an area where the line was getting pinched. Aside from that, the tank is clean as a whistle. I dumped the fuel and washed it all out before I replaced everything between the tank and the carb. I think you're onto something here with the vapor lock. Thanks.

I'm wondering if its diaphram in the fuel pump, might need replaced or atleast cleaned. I've owned several Kohler engines and, with todays ethanol in the fuel it breaks down rubber hoses and diaphrams. Normally in my 16 HP single cylinder Kohler I just have to clean the gunk off the rubber diaphram and look at the spring behind the diaphram they too get a little rusty from the ethanol. Hope that's all there is wrong John. My Kohler is 50 years old, I've never had to replace this diapram, just clean it and the spring. Also look at the 1/8" piston that is driven by a lobe from the crankshaft. It might have some rust or tarnish on it. Be an easy fix for you.

Loosen the cap on the gas tank. If that helps you need a new gas cap. It may be causing a vacuum.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Good idea. I'll test that. Thank you!
@michaelevans29892 жыл бұрын
Fuel issue, switch back to 1/4 inch line yours is way too thick for your pump to draw fuel through. Thicker line = heavier fuel to draw. Other is that you moved your line to the top of the engine. By doing that your fuel pump has to work harder to pull that fuel up over the engine. Lower the line back to where it was this way you can get some vacuum pressure to assist pulling the fuel. That diaphragm is wearing out a lot faster than normal. You can blow that pump again.

In a previous video, yes - but I didn't pressure test it. I'm guessing you're thinking it has a break somewhere, like a drinking straw with a hole. Always annoying to drink a coke that way. It's worth checking out. Easy enough to take it out and inspect it. Thanks!

If I remember right, when you replaced the fuel line and pump you rerouted the line, higher up over the engine. This may cause more of a syphon effect from the tank. Is there any way you can route the line lower, below the carb level? I know that in front of the engine there was a pinch problem. Is there any room to go in back of the engine? Just a thought. Love your videos, and best of luck preparing your new house site.

Is the filter on backwards?
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Weird thing is it works very well for 15-20 minutes tops. It's like the pump powered from the crankcase isn't drawing enough fuel and it dries up after a while (even when it's fully primed). The fuel filter is oriented correctly. Fuel flows outside, then it's pulled from the middle of the filter on its way to the carb.

I think the fuel filter is backwards my friend
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
It looked weird to me too. Usually, there's a directional arrow, but this one didn't have one. I know the filter looks like it's an upside-down funnel the way I have it, but having it this way allows the fuel to enter and pass through the outside of the internal filter and then the clean gas is sucked through the middle. This is me assuming you should be able to see if the filter is dirty. That's just my logic though.
