Right! The reason why larger cooperations make more money is because they know how to market and make products or services accessible to people who live on various budgets. Disney would do well if they could figure out a way to go back to the basics. All money is good money. Disney should want money from families with both conservative and elaborate budgets. I recently visited Disney in February 2018 and I cannot begin to tell you how many hours of overtime and double time I had to work to get there. There just has to be a better way.
@lombardi986 жыл бұрын
I miss the old way Disney used to make more money, by enticing you to stay more days by building more parks etc. it's not right to me that for some one now compared to 25 years ago, that they have to spend such a higher % of their yearly earnings for the same amount of experience. I would even say less experience with the quality slippage lately. But with DVC they know they already have a certain number of people guaranteed to buy in.

Now you can see the real reason why Americans are taking fewer and fewer vacations every year. More than half the population in this country can barely get by let alone afford to go on holiday even for a single weekend.

I visited WDW last October for the first time in 18 years. I was not impressed with the overall experience. Just the sheer amount of pre-trip “planning” I had to undertake was unbelievable. The whole thing was overpriced and not good quality. I was a lifelong Disney guy. I am no longer one of their fans. I seriously doubt I will ever be back.

Have and have nots? Wife and I were seated beside a single mom and her 7 years old daughter at the Crystal Palace in February. Pooh invited the child to join him for a dance around the restaurant, and the kid squealed, "This is the best day of my life." When the little one dashed off, her mom teared up. She told us she had started saving for this Disney holiday the year her kid was born. Seven years. What breaks my heart about the growing evidence of Disney's neglect of those living from pay heck to pay check is that I probably won't ever see that beautiful little family again.

Yes and no. Saying you're poor but you were at Disney when you were a kid? I only was able to afford to go to Disney when I turned 30... So although yes, Disney is catering to the more wealthy, it was NEVER for the poor. The pop-up amusement parks (like Toronto's CNE) is more for the poor than Disney is. Sorry if that offends, but it was never for the poor, nor did I think they marketed that way either.
@SeriouslyCreepy6 жыл бұрын
It was and still is for everyone. Some of us just have to save up a little bit harder. It's not catering to the wealthy, it's just giving them some extra options. That's everything in life. Including cars. You can have the same car with all the bells and whistles or stock. Just depends on how much each person wants to pay.
@jamesvitelli88006 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. It can't be for everyone. A single day at the Magic Kingdom during peak season for two adults and two children costs $504. So for a family that can drive to the park and visit for a single day, their total cost of tickets, parking and food will cost roughly $600. And yes, the "per day" price of tickets decreases the longer you stay, you have to account for lodging, parking and meal costs for each additional day of your stay. So if you increase that family's stay to three days, the ticket price "falls" to an average of $395 per day, but the total ticket price climbs to $1,184. Add in three days of lodging, parking and meals and you are easily up to $1,700 for a three day vacation. If you think that every family of four in this country can afford to pay $600 for a single days' entertainment, or $1,700 for a three day vacation, then you really don't understand the mid-to-lower end of the American economy. Not even close.

I love you, Ryno. You hit me right in the feels. All of you made really excellent points. An average family can't afford Disney. And if they do scrimp and save to make the trip, it better damned well be as advertised. It should be the happiest place on earth for everyone, every time. Our last trip in January was the first time I really noticed a little of the magic wearing off. It was for my mother-in-law's 80th birthday. No cast members made any mention of it except our waiter at the Flying Fish. It was also our first "Welcome Home" as DVC members at the Polynesian. No one at the resort bid us welcome home, although one cast member at the Magic Kingdom gates did. Many of the park and resort cast members were exactly as Charles was describing. Like Walmart employees just trying to make it through the day. They're well aware that they're working at a place that they themselves could never afford. And having worked in the service industry, Steve's point is exactly right, too. If there aren't enough employees on duty, then those who are there don't have time to spread any pixie dust.
@rosswalker33976 жыл бұрын
I love the Dis Unplugged and watch every week. This is the first time I have commented but felt I had to say that Ryno's comment was right on point!! I also thought Charles gave a great insight with his Wal-Mart analogy. The last time I was in Disney World was in September 2016, visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland. The cost of the holiday was just over £7,000 (about $9,800) including flights, park tickets and stay at Caribbean Beach for my wife and I. We both have well paying jobs, however, it took a whole year of saving and penny pinching to afford the trip. It was amazing and worth the money but since then we have had a son, our financial perspectives have changed and we can no longer justify spending that kind of money for a 2 week holiday, it could be used for so much more important things. Now for us and so many families it would take years of saving to afford the holiday and Disney just can't expect people to be handing over their hard earned cash from years of hard work for an experience and level of service which isn't outstanding. The tipping point for Disney is coming and it will defiantly result from their reduced levels of service and their arrogance around items like car parking charges and staff treatment will only accelerate the issue.

Way to go Ryno! I completely agree with you. The price we paid when we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge in 2002 for the honeymoon package was a little over $1,700. In 2016 for our family of 4 to stay at the value resort 5 days $3,900. We were planning on going back February of 2019 and are now having to reconsider the vacation. We are not a mid level family and really it takes years of saving to be able to go. We drive from Va to save on plane tickets. We really don't know what we are going to do now. We love Disney but we can't afford to go often and now even less.
@JohnAJohnson6 жыл бұрын
Stay off property at a resort that's close by, free parking and provides bus transportation to the Disney parks, then use in park-to-park transportation. Also by non-expiration tickets while your kids are still within the child price range and they will automatically update them to an adult ticket when they get older free of cost. A 10 day ticket with 1 visit a year could be used for 10 separate vacations so you'll only have to pay for a much cheaper Orlando area hotel.
@rosestewart16066 жыл бұрын
I agree. We've been going every year for 11 years and we are done. We love the value resorts but as you say we're now paying at least as much as deluxe resorts used to cost. It's not just that it's not affordable...with so much construction and big crowds the parks are just ok. And if we're not going to the parks we don't have to go to Disney at all. And there are so many more affordable places to visit...for us in Canada Europe is just as far away.
@Tsumami__6 жыл бұрын
Jessica Allgood How was a value resort $3,900 for five days? Sorry but that’s not right. The moderate resorts aren’t even that much. Unless you mean the ENTIRE trip, or maybe the hotel plus the dining plan, not just the hotel cost. The value resorts are barely more than a hundred dollars a night. I’m staying at Riverside in a couple weeks and that’s just over $1300 for four people for four nights. No way is a value resort that much.
@rosestewart16066 жыл бұрын
Goddess Usako room price plus 5 day park tix and dining plan for 4 all over 10 years old. I can see it. The room price is the smallest part of the cost of a trip and the other costs are the same no matter where you stay.
@jessicaallgood44366 жыл бұрын
Goddess Usako this was for the entire trip...lodging was around 120 a night, then tickets for 4 people over 10, lowest dining plan and yes I added in the photo pass. I just gave the total as a package deal because I booked everything at the same time through Disney.
@tcraigg45636 жыл бұрын
Yes RYNO!!! I don't think Sean is thinking as a consumer who is not there for the day and going home to their house or apt 15 minutes away. Sean doesn't have to pay for a hotel, parking, food, tickets. He has annual pass and can go home to eat and stay there, and the annual pass includes parking so he doesn't have to even pay for that. $100 may not break some people, but it will break others. Ryno hit the nail on the head. Disney is a company that doesn't care about regular folks. The problem is not the price increase but the nickel and diming for every little thing with no increase in quality.
@Poxabomination6 жыл бұрын
Toisan Craigg yeah, normally as a "poor person" I take their commentary in stride and don't get offended, but I will say some comments in this video were a bit abrasive even to me. $100 is my food budget for 2 whole weeks at home. Going to WDW is a privilege and not a right for sure, but not all of us are fortunate enough for $100 to be inconsequential when planning a trip.

On our first trip we stayed an extra day so we could go to the opening day of then MGM studios and my parents had to drive through the night on the way home so they could get to work the next day with us sleeping in the back of the car. Disney is a business and they should make money, but it would be nice if they could figure out a way to provide some value for those who sacrifice so much to give their kids a magical experience and can’t afford deluxe resorts and signature restaurants.

AMEN, RYNO!!!! We already have reservations to stay at Art of Animation in May. But with the planning of each trip, there is always a huge debate (and usually an argument) in our family: are we going to stay on property or off property? I am strongly in the off-property camp because my feeling is it's cheaper, and even when I stay on property I absolutely hate Disney transportation....so (unless it's the boats going over to Disney Springs) I would much rather drive. This time I lost the argument, and we are staying on-property. But even those who are on the side of "on-property" are 100% on board with this being our last time ever on-property. This is the last kick in the teeth. One of the strong voices who was firmly planted with the on-property group is even saying.... "enough Disney for a LONG while. Let's do TWO vacations a year discovering the country instead of the once a year at Disney." We all agreed... it's time.

Hi Dis Team! I did the college program last year, and I have to say that I totally know where you're coming from with the cast members not doing as good of a job as they should be doing. I was a custodian, so I know all about the amount of trash at Disney. It is absolutely insane how nasty it gets, especially in bathrooms. I always worked really hard to keep my restroom cleaned and the streets swept and the trash cans from overflowing. However, I knew SEVERAL cast members who didn't care. They hid out in different areas and did one or two trash runs a shift and expected someone else to do their work for them. This wasn't the college program people either, these were full time cast members. The people who were on the college program were actually the ones doing all of the work because I think we cared a little more. That's not to say that that's how every single CP is, but a lot of these full time members simply don't give a crap about working at Disney. I knew a lot that did, but I would say over half of the CM's would let their cans get overflowed. Now all of that being said, I will say that sometimes there are areas (like the Safari queue line in DAK) where the trashcans can get overflowed every single hour and it's hard to keep running your banana boat back and forth lol. But cast members should always be on top of their game!!!!
@rosestewart16066 жыл бұрын
Nora Alyse that's really interesting. There is another issue with understaffing. The cleaner a place is the more likely people are to keep it clean eg. They will actually look for a trash can instead of throwing it on the ground. There's a tipping point where your job as custodian becomes exponentially harder because most people no longer care.

This was a great Dis Unplugged! Ryno and Pete I completely agree. I am planning on having children in the future, and I worry that they will never get to experience the Disney World that I love. They are making it hard for people like me who drive down. It's only a 6 hour drive for us and it doesn't make sense to pay for a plane ticket. Staying off site is going to be the normal now. The quality has gone down and crowds are getting crazy! My mom and I have had annual passes for awhile now and we use to try planning trips during the slow times which do not really exist anymore. I think the high crowds as well as decrease staffing are definitely leading to the loss in quality! I hope Disney can get it together so in 10 years I can bring my kids to the most magical place on earth!

Great video with some very eloquent points, thanks. I wonder how our UK (and other Countries’) travel companies will deal with the parking charges when selling future 14 night package holidays which currently often include a basic model hire car? It’s going to be interesting to see the 2019 Florida/Disney holiday brochures. The companies will undoubtedly try to negotiate a discounted parking rate with Disney but it is sure to add a significant cost increase to the package which must affect bookings. You might have hoped that Disney would offer a weekly and fortnight rate for their parking as an inducement for longer duration stays. Anyhow, many more European people with children will simply find it too costly and decide to go to the Spanish resorts with their kids. Ironically, it will be the more mature people who don’t have young children that are the only ones who will be able to afford to visit Disney parks. Perhaps the parks of the future will be full of ‘mature folks’ - not a great prospect.

Is it because the real estate is more at those resorts that you have to pay more for the same rectangle of pavement somewhere else? Is the paint better that marks the spots off? Maybe it has gold in it? Or is it that they just figure that if you're staying at a deluxe resort you have more money, so screw you?

It's all swamp land so no...it's not about the land. And most of the cars are rentals so it's not about the cars. It is just about your wallet and the assumption that you don't care.

Rose Stewart I believe the original commenter was being a little tongue in cheek with his comments about the land being different... obviously the land doesn’t have gold in it...but yes it is all about them making more money

Ryno-100% correct. I want to hug you my child. I noticed changes there in Dec 2016 on my last visit compared especially to my 1st in 1975 and my parents comments about the amazing pleasant atmosphere and cleanliness. I did notice the decline in quality service, especially the bathroom cleanliness that last visit. We were and still are drivers from CT and am obviously not happy about charges for parking. I am considering staying off site again for my trip next year instead of my 2nd "home" Pop Century. I will need to cost compare park parking cost charges vs lodging charges with and without paying to park where I stay. Disney is adding even more planning work to a job of planning. We are still going though aren't we. $

We drove to Disney from Nova Scotia last year 😎 32 hours...3 days...it was great. We did fly down for a quick trip this year but our next big trip...2 weeks...was going to be 4 families driving down at the same time and hooking up along the way. So the parking fees will cost them 6 hotel rooms. We're now looking at alternate locations. It's not just the parking but if you make us choose between buying plane tickets for a family of 5 and having an affordable vacation, we're going to go where we get the most value for a 2 week trip.
@tbomb8876 жыл бұрын
We are AP holders with a 6.5 hour drive. We average 2 week long stays with a quick 2-3 day in the middle. This parking deal has now taken the quick trip out of the budget. We just returned from a 6 day trip that was first ever "off property" and i was nervous. It was fantastic. We spent $1000 just on food that trip. So now, they lose 2-3 day hotel stay and all that merch sales because they went for a money grab.

Sean has really been coming off as one of those people who will refuse to watch a foreign movie because it has subtitles or someone who would go to a different country and ask locals if they speak English instead of saying “I’m sorry I don’t speak ____.” Over and over now he has made it clear that he finds dealing with different cultures somewhat of an inconvenience. Kind of ignorant of you ask me.

Thank you so much for this. I’ve been so upset. Charging more for a lesser product together mistreating their employees and obvious disregard to safety have me feeling differently about the company that’s been part of my family for decades. It’s honestly heartbreaking...watching this made me feel better. Thank you especially to Pete and Ryno who so perfectly expressed how upsetting this new Disney attitude is.

I get the railing against any price increases. But do understand business and the laws of supply and demand. As you mentioned, only after the crash in 2008 did they start offering any meaningful value to annual pass holders. Why? Because they were losing business. If people still flock to the parks they will continue to push the envelope on charging for everything and anything they can. People staying home is the only thing that will get their attention.

aka AAA I have been a Disney stock owner since 2011. I first talked about the possibility of buying stock way back in 1986, but it wasn't until much later that I actually did it. I have to say, I have been so proud of Disney and their accomplishments over the last few years. But the bloom is definitely off the rose when it comes to myself as a stockholder. Disney is having these Great accomplishments... The new international parks, the attendance and the parks are doing very well, Marvel and Star Wars just go crazy... And yet the stock has lost ground or stagnated. Within the last couple months I just can't be proud of being a stockholder any longer. It's just not making sense anymore . I have whittled my Disney Holdings back to a sliver. And I'm not sure I'll look back.

Maybe something should be done with offsite guests parking for free for the day at Disney Springs and using Disney transport to access the parks. Disney transport is paid for by resort guests. That would now make those guests the only ones to park for free at Disney.

Keep trying to take the kids, but every time I work out a budget the increases just makes me so sad. At this rate we will never be able to afford to go. The level of service we received at All Stars was pathetic when we paid thousands of pounds coming from the UK (and that was our honeymoon), so we upgraded to C.Beach on our last ever trip there. I never thought we would not be able to afford a family holiday. :-(

Hello - very well stated. I agree the experience of Disney World has been evolving - not in an upward motion but downward. Only going on my experiences as a adult - starting - say in 2003 as a Pass Member. The integrity and magic that existed then - is not easily located - 'cookie cutter' is a word that seems appropriate. My experience with Cast Members say in 2003 verses now - is truly like day and night. Yet, I remain a Annual Pass Holder and use 'benefits' like Tables of Wonderland but -- have a unsettling feeling at times based on the true quality of my experience rather than is it the 'memory' of Disney that actually keeps me returning. I obviously enjoy and take delight in going to Disney but the overall experience is not the same. I find myself 'pretending' it is - thinking about how amazing Walt Disney's Dream was and overlooking how my experience may actually be. I hold annual pass memberships to Busch Gardens/Sea World and Universal. I've traveled to Williamsburg Busch Gardens and there you still have a great experience and it does puzzle me - Williamsburg does not pretend to give a magical experience but it still gives the experience - I wish Disney World would bring back on a regular basis. I adore Universal and their Cast Members /Staff - I have always had a great experience with the staff at Universal. I do feel special while at Universal - always but maybe I have just been blessed. I love the free Valet parking that my pass allows!! My experience with Williamsburg Busch Gardens is why I originally obtained my Annual Pass Membership with Busch Gardens. It gave me access Orlando Sea World and Tampa Bay Busch Gardens (as well as water parks and other Sea World locations) - ahh fell in love with free membership and discounts - moved onto Universal (their discounts and Valet parking ) and then finally obtained the Disney membership! Great show! Keep up the good work and have a great Italy trip!!

Excellent segment. Loved it! My daughter was in the room studying for finals while I was listening and said "I love these guys!". My biggest issue with the parking fee is that they are impacting those of us that are annual passholders/Florida residents or close enough to drive - and those that have to drive because they can't afford to fly. The increase is not being equally distributed among all guests staying at resorts. Just add a few dollars per night to EVERYONE's room and make it fair. Also - why should I have to pay $66 more for parking at the Poly for my 6 night stay this July than someone staying at Pop? I'm not getting a better parking space! Loved Ryno's comments. Very heartfelt.
@GiaBlinks6 жыл бұрын
They should be charging the people who are parking at the resorts, but are not staying at the resort. It's not fair to charge the people who are already paying for a room. And, it's ridiculous to charge higher parking fees for higher end resorts, why should they pay more for the same parking spot?!

Our family of 3 adults are long time AP Disneylanders. Each of us grew up with DL right in our "backyard" and have experienced going there since our childhoods. In February, we recent vacationed for the first time at Walt Disney World after many years of wanting to go, but somehow just never really finding it our budget. Last year we made a pact that we would go in February no matter what. We made our airline reservations, resort (Moderate - Port Orleans Riverside) reservations, bought our tickets for 5 days (no park hoppers), passed on the dining plans (we were happy that we did) and bought the memory maker photo package (very happy that we did buy it). We ate mostly 1 full service meal a day and and counter service when we got hungry in the parks. We treated ourselves to a wonderful dinner at The Yachtsman (amazing), purchased the Magic Kingdom firework dessert package and a few Disney trinkets to take home. We spent around $5,500 for this Disney experience. We loved it! However, I can see now from our experience that the cost of this vacation should be considered "luxury" as the expense would be difficult for a moderate income family to afford. After watching this episode, I completely understand that after paying this exorbinate cost, you expect the quality of the experience to be comparable to cost. We did notice some differences from our own "home parks." The cleanliness of the parks were not as kept as we are used here at Disneyland and California Adventure and the general maintenance showed that repairs are needed. So now adding even more costs makes it seem even more out of reach for families to choose WDW or DL as their vacation destination. Ryno's comments were spot on and voiced what most of us feel.

The reason Shanghai Disney went so much over cost was due to China's policies of "do it fast and don't worry about quality". That's one reason so many people don't buy their apartments/condos - they just rent because the building isn't going to be kept up and in a few years, it starts falling apart, so they just move. Disney dealt with that and then they had to re-do the work because it wasn't up to par. So costs were astronomical. -- I got this information from a Disney engineer. -- And I've heard that it isn't bringing in the money that Disney was counting on, so other Disney parks have to pick up the slack. -- Disney adminstrators should have studied Chinese culture and politics thoroughly before they got into China.
