Thank you so much or posting this video! I really wish I could have seen all that they have there. A colonial band playing down Liberty Square? That is love. Man I wish I could have seen that. I miss 20K soo much. That was one of my favorite rides there. It actually closed in 1996 btw, not 20 years ago... close though! :) Thank you for the vid!!!

This is great seeing this. I first came to Disney 1984 and I was baby then with pictures in stroller, and although I don't remember much from then, I still see the pictures, and it looks closer to this than now. I remember 20 leagues under the sea, but do not remember Mickey Mouse Revue. When was that taken out of the Magic Kingdom? I am from S Fl. (about 2.5 hours away from the WDW), but the rest of the state grew with Disney!! I also went one week after 9/11 too, and was as empty as 1972.

It's so amazing how something we thought was so totally COOL looks so cheezy now =0) I am glad technology has changed. I saw some of the old prices listed. I didn't pay for it when I was a child, but I do remember having individual tickets for the rides. I didn't get to see alot of it cuz the tickets weren't for everything. I am sure glad they started the one price all ride system. Thank you for posting this nostalgic look at WDW.

I am a bit younger than you but first visited in 1973. We stayed at the Contemporary for $85 a night. We only stayed one night because we walked in and got a cancellation. Even back then, the hotel was booked one year in advance. My book of tickets cost only about $8 but I think we got a discount. A B C D and E tickets were in the book.

Well, actually Marc Davis from WED Enterprises thought that PotC at WDW was going to be even better than the one at Disneyland, but management at the time wanted it open as quickly as possible which of course meant having a cliff notes version of the ride. When this film was made they probably didn't know which scenes would be cut yet or didn't tell the production team who was working on it.

I remember how it looked in the 70s and 80s. think I only went once in the 90s. (I live in Daytona) Then we went once last year and I was so disappointed. I didn't even realize they had done any remodeling. I thought it had just gotten really old looking. But if you like it, then I'm sure many others do too. We had a park-hopper pass so we just went to MGM and Pleasure Island instead =)

@djthereplay It was Roy who made that decision to build the MK, not Walt. Up until Walt's death the only drawings and/or plans were the property map and a few sketches for EPCOT. You cannot find a single artist rendering of the MK dated prior to December 1966. The earliest designs were dated in 1967, which is when Roy changed the direction away from EPCOT and towards the easiest path - building a similar, less expensive, smaller scale (by number of attractions and services) of Disneyland.

Wow. Interesting to see what's still there and what's not. The sky around it looked so empty without all those 'mountains' sticking up. At first I was like "since when did the Speedway cars go by the Contemporary?" Then I realized Space Mountain wasnt there yet! There must have been a clear view straight to the Contemporary.

We live 90 minutes south of WDW Orlando and go there often with the grandkids. Its true Walt Disney learned from mistakes they made on Disneyland so they bought more land and did better on WDW. We miss the old rides, too, especially the Sky Lift. After everybody had a fit they've finally put the Tiki Room 8:12 back to the original, (after several years of being assaulted by the awful Gilbert Gottfried bird). Walt's nephew Roy died so there's no connection with the Disney family anymore.

@loonercrazy In The Theme Park Area, You are right that Roy Named the Theme Park Area The Magic Kingdom and Built The Magic Kingdom in detail. You are right that there were no detailed plans and sketches of The Amusement Theme Park, But Walt Himself said and pointed out that there would be another amusement theme park in Florida similar to the one in California. He said it just before he went into detail about His Original Plan for EPCOT. - Dwight

Right after 9/11 you could book all resorts wile you were driving to Disney World (I live in Florida)and get a room with no problem. Then when you went to the parks, the wait for rides was no longer then 30 minutes! Now I have to call at least 3 week in advance to book the Polynesian Resort! Unless you call at 7AM when they update all there cancelations.

@loonercrazy So really, what I am trying to say is that if there is anything for sure in Walt Disney World that would be designed anywhere close to Walt's Idea, believe it or not, It is The Theme Park with the Castle which was one of the Parts of WDW that Walt Disney did not leave any detailed plans for on the masterplan and that he just said that there would be a theme park very much like the one in California (Disneyland) that is the Park that we know today as The Magic Kingdom. - Dwight

@loonercrazy You`re right in a few areas. Walt Disney only buying the land for WDW which he originally called it, " Disney World ". But Walt's Brother, Roy changed the name to " Walt Disney World ". You're right about EPCOT in Detail and The lack of Details for The Magic Kingdom Park and Hotel design in the masterplan. However, Walt did say that The Theme park would look very much like the one in California, and it does. Cont`d on my next post. - Dwight

This makes me both happy and sad. It has attractions that should still be there like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. But it also has attractions that would be better off not there like the horribly botched WDW version of Pirates of the Caribbean.

@djthereplay I'm sorry dj, but Walt never said that about the theme park looking like the one in California. His only known comment in connecting the two parks is that he said Disney already knows how to build a Disneyland, so that is why he was so focused on his EPCOT Center concept. The MK was not necessarily what Walt had in mind as the "amusement park" he had written on the property map. He really didn't know what that park was going to be up until the time of his death. >>>Continued

@MoveOnDotOrgg I'm sorry darling, but Walt Disney died before the first drawing of any building was completed for WDW. The first dated artist rendering for any component of the MK or the hotels was in 1967/68 after Walt Disney died in 1966. He played NO role in the actual creation of the property outside of the purchase of the land and what was HIS idea of EPCOT Center. The MK and overall property was designed by a corporation. Disneyland was designed by a visionary man who had a dream.

@MoveOnDotOrgg Hello MoveOnDotOrgg, but Walt Disney did NOT design Florida as well. The only thing Walt played a hand in with WDW was buying the property and the big overall masterplan that included the land for what was supposed to be a very different EPCOT Center. Not one drawing was done on the MK or any of the hotels until after Walt's passing in '66. I'm sorry, but pretty much 95% of WDW was designed by a committee and not by Walt himself. It shows too as being inferior to Disneyland

This is because Walt purchased so much more land in Florida than he did in California.I don't even understand how anyone who's been down to Florida's WDW can even argue this point .We have The Magic Kingdom, Epcot,Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and two Disney Water Parks. Not to mention ALL the Disney Resorts. There's just NOOOOOO comparison. sorry Disneyland, I love ya, but you lose this one!
