The first I went to Disney was in February or April of 1976. I was in 6th grade and my Mom took my brother and I. The vacation was a gift for Christmas. Best Christmas present I ever got.

Great seeing the plot of real estate where Big Thunder Mountain was eventually built and seeing an almost completed Space Mountain. I was there then and I remember the cast members on duty at the entrance to Space Mountain telling guests that it would be open in a couple of months.

It’s wild to me that so many things inside the Magic Kingdom have changed over the years…but yet so many things have remained the same. I guess that was Walt’s vision all along. ❤

Love this video! Small crowd due to the fall/off-season and also probably the impact of the 73 oil embargo and economic downturn. This is what cancelled many of WDW's original plans for phase 2.

Was there in 1974. Compared to today it was less about selling you things inside the park than seeing or doing. Shopping was limited and it was all about seeing and doing. It was much less crowded and felt very middle America with families enjoying themselves for 1 to 3 days. The average family could budget a Disney vacation there easily. I recall 1974 being interesting as there were large tour groups from Japan getting off buses and as Americans we were amused that every Japanese man over 20 had a camera and was taking pictures of everything. There were no wait lines as a rule except space mountain that did take about 20 minutes to get into. Dining was cheaper and simpler. The main attraction was main street at night for the electra light parade. Films like this show clearly who we were a half century ago and who we have become.

I'm struck by how uncrowded it was, and how generally unhurried everyone seems. A far cry from today, for sure. Also, how awesome are the spires at the entrance of Tomorrowland? Wish I could've seen that in person!

Its interesting to hear that they used the Main Street Electrical Parade music for The Electrical Water Pageant. I had no idea they did that at one point and Ive been going to WDW since 1976.
@scotsmith239120 сағат бұрын
Baroque Hoedown was originally written for the Water Pageant. As Disneyland had no equivalent attraction, the Main Street Electrical Parade was created for them and the company just reused that theme. A couple of years later Walt Disney World got its version of the Main Street Electrical Parade (1977 I believe right as America on Parade was ending). New music was then provided for the Water Pageant.

This footage is remarkable! There are so many beautiful glimpses of many spaces that no longer exist. It’s especially exciting to see the hub and entrance to tomorrowland as it used to be this grand portal into the “future “. I suspect that this wasn’t 8 mm but actually super 8 that also had sound recording capability. 8 mm cameras, technically never had sound.

The original pre-1975 20K narration too! Another rarity. And the Peter Pan footage might be the earliest attempt I've seen to film the interior of a Fantasyland Dark Ride.

This film really has that "i just stepped through a time portal" feel. 🥹 Gave me the chills when I got to the re-walk down the steps into the 20,000 Leagues ride and look out the porthole. So heartwarming knowing that the Electrical Water Pageant is still around to this day almost unchanged. The octopus is still my favorite. ❤️

i don't know why Disney removed the tall spire-like fountains at the entrance to Tomorrowland. They look more futuristic than those stupd blue rocks they have there now. The spires were cool and stunning, just like we all hope Tomorrow will actually be.
@gridley4 ай бұрын
Even worse than that (way worse), the Rivers of America area is reportedly going to be removed for a racing-cartoon-car attraction.
@JohnGYoung4 ай бұрын
Agreed, in theory it was because the fountains sprayed water onto the pathway. But certainly there could’ve been a better solution that would’ve kept their elegance and the mid century style of that part of the park.

The end of this appears to be Busch Gardens Tampa. The brewery had a monorail tour I believe, the one in Los Angeles did, anyway. Busch Gardens itself was free, but the brewery/monorail tour cost like 50 cents, if it was like L.A.
@johnrpishotta4 ай бұрын
It was indeed Busch Gardens Tampa Bay - we went there more than Disney at first as being from Clearwater, it was closer. Yes, there was a monorail (suspended train style) that went through the "Serengeti Plains" as an attraction - these trains were originally installed in 1966 and used propane powered engines for propulsion until a later retro fit. Closed in 1999 I do believe, to make way for new attractions.

Hi. What a nice video - thanks! Question for all: Were any of you at WDW in March or April of 1974? I ask because I was. My nuclear submarine was in a large shipyard in Pascagoula, MS and three of us decided to rent an airplane and fly to Kissimmee. How you ask? One of the guys had a private pilots license and, and flying a 4-person plane was much like driving a submarine (except we could see where we were going on the plane🙂). I recall how neat it was flying alomost directly over WDW (at that time, only Magic Kingdom)! The flight down was smooth and didn't take us too long (I believe 4 hours) which was helped by a tail wind. Flying back on Sunday was different, had to fly around several thunderstorms with a sometimes strong head wind. We landed at Kissimmee airport and the hotel we were staying at (World Inn, located in Downtown Disney) came out and picked us up. I believe that hotel is still there, but has been changed and renamed (?). There was a free shuttle from the hotel to the Magic Kingdom. We were in the park Saturday and Sunday, before flying back to Pascagoula late Sunday afternoon. I recall seeing Space mountain being built at that time. Had a great weekend, thankful for the good memory. God Bless!

3:20. A rarity to see footage of the CircleVision theater interior! "Magic Carpet Round The World" remains the only Disney CircleVision film for which no home video recording has ever surfaced.
@jeffreyhughes71074 ай бұрын
We only had a Super 8 mm, so I can’t speak for 8 mm, the film cartridge was only 3 minutes and 20 seconds long - you had to be judicious on selecting what to film. I spotted a Kodak 110 Instamatic too. I think we’d come home with only 24 or 36 pictures per vacation. Now I wouldn’t think twice of taking 15 photos of my cat eating, we’ve come a long way.

It's rare to see regular 8mm with synchronize sound. It is possible, but usually required a separate tape recorder with a cable transmitting a pulse. Quite the equipment to lug around WDW. Could this have been Super 8 film?
