In 1977 Walter Payton set the NFL single game rushing record with 275 yards. CBS Sports made a short tribute video of Walter, with the song, "Nobody does it better", by Carly Simon. As a kid at the time, I remember watching the video and have been searching for it ever since, with no luck.. So I created this video as close to the original version as I could remember. All video rights belong to the NFL and the Chicago Bears. Music, "Nobody does it better" composed by Marvlin Hamlisch. Lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, and sung by Carly Simon. This is a Non Profit video. This is a fan made video which is being used to express the views and opinions of the fan, and is made for entertainment purposes only.

At the time watching it, as 13 year old, I got the big tears in my eyes, slowly began to run down my cheeks. Those tears are bigger today at 60; especially with his early passing in 1999. Whether we were on defense or offense, Walter Payton was our hero, and our big brother. Thank you for recreating such a big part of our childhood. ❤ #34

I was 11 when I saw the original CBS sports tribute that I was searching for today. I am now 57 and this recreation brought the tears to my eyes that I was expecting. My wife and seven year old son saw Jared Payton recently on his way to the WGN studios. He was so nice and approachable, got down to my son's level and showed him a video of his father playing football. Had I been there, I would have lost it. What a great song, and tribute, to my favorite player ever.

Had the pleasure of meeting Walter Payton at Arizona State the Bears held a one week practice at our facility, we talked every day for that whole week he was extremely pleasant, nice and special, here’s what he told me,he said bird I may not be the biggest, or the strongest or the fastest, but I am the smartest. Love always..

I remember this also.It was 77. I could’ve done Joe Avellini’s job, handoff to Payton, hand off to Payton, throw an incomplete pass, handoff to Walter Payton. Just imagine 11 defensive players lined up and they’re all looking at you. They know your getting the ball and they can’t stop you from first and 10 yardage. He brought the intimidation. He brought the pain. You didn’t run him out of bounds. He ran right through you. Teams like Dallas the Redskins 49ers New York Giants walking into a game not saying we are going to beat the Bears today. They are saying today we are going to stop Walter Payton. And they couldn’t, Walter Payton was Superman.

Best all around football player ever. He was the Bear's back up field goal kicker and punter. I was hanging around the Bear's practice field with a buddy after they finished practice in Platteville one day back in the mid-eighties. Practice was open to the public back then. Hotter than heck. Payton stayed out on the field to practice his punting. He asked me and my friend if we'd shag punts for him. HELL YEAH. Best day ever. Class act.

One of my favorite Walter memories is the way he would DESTROY someone attempting to tackle him near the sideline, rather than running out of bounds. Best ever ❤ Love you, Walter - you made growing up watching the Bears special.

I don't think that it it. I used to have it on VHS tape. Pretty sure it was done for the Bears Giants playoff game. Before, halftime, or after.. I don't recall. I almost positive it had Bud Grant the coach of the Vikings watching him in awe and not getting mad when he ran for 275yds against them. Uncharacteristic of him. Unless I remembering that video wrong, I will never forget that look on his face. Saw it later since I was at that playoff game. I was also at the game when he ran for 275yds.

I also must add … I am a Bleeding Green Eagles Fan 🦅 . All my life ( I’m 55 now ). So watching the original footage of this , was so bittersweet. I was only like 9 years old . ( maybe 10 ). It was bittersweet because I didn’t like the Bears . But all of a sudden , my so called dedication to my birds started to shift a bit . It was at that time that I started to give appreciation to the other athletes. I wasn’t afraid to wear a Payton jersey . I also wore a Tarkenton jersey . Had a Raiders varsity jacket . Oh I was all over the place haha . Still Am !! And I really sincerely believe it was because of Walter Payton and this video . I have raised my son to be the same way . Yes he loves his Philly sports teams but he is not afraid to wear some other teams jersey . We won’t wear them to the games haha - Ya got to draw the line somewhere haha . Wear what ya want . Paying tribute to the greats is not a crime . I doubt I will ever wear or own a Tom Brady Jersey …… But maybe after he retires I will . I’ll be like 70 at that point . Haha Again and again …. Excellent Video !! Made my day !!!

Another clue for helping unearth the original CBS video from 1977 is that around the time Walter broke the all time record, or maybe right after he retired-- Johnny Morris did a Special titled, "Run Sweet Walter" (or at least that's the name I can remember), and in that Special, they played the 1977 video tribute with Carly Simon. So, hope that helps, I wasn't able to locate the original on youtube. Maybe if anyone knows someone at WBBM Chicago, they might have easier time finding the "Run Sweet Walter" tape. Good Luck! What a hero to grow up with!

Like many of those commenting, I was 8 then and he was and still is my favorite player EVER. Biased, maybe- don't care. I will defend that #34 is the best player ever to anyone. I would watch the NFL Today religiously back then, eyes glued on every story. Even when the Bears stunk, which was most years in the 70's- I could always say, "Yeah, but we have Sweetness." I was just thinking of that NFL on CBS tribute from 1977 today and wanted to check when I got home to see if anyone posted it - close to the original; I remember Phylis George introducing it and I knew it was from late 1977 at the end of the regular season. And the song and movie came out earlier in the year. A great moment in time when the NFL still stood tall. We were fortunate to grow up when we did and enjoy the last golden years of professional football. Thank you again for remembering and caring enough to giving it a shot - your synch up with the music is great and most of that footage was on the original CBS reel.

I also remember that video and found this looking for the one from the past. Walter is this Packer fan's most favorite football player of all time. There is no back in the league today who can do what he did, in the manner in which he did it. Tough and durable.

Thanks for this. I remember that watching that video as a kid as well. As a Minnesotan it is sad to see so many great plays against the Vikings! But he was the best. I'm so glad you included that blocking segment at 2:34. I heard a story about some NFL coach who made his running backs watch a video he had made of just Walter Payton blocking... he was a great running back not just for his yards and TDs but he understood pass protection and could see a blitz coming.

Very much appreciate the kind things that you said about the video Douglas! The only thing I couldn't find online to use in my video that was in the original is I remember the camera had a focus of then head coaching great, Bud Grant, and he apparently was watching Walter run for a long touchdown because all they showed was his face looking in one direction then moving all the way across to the other and then just had this look on his face as he shook his head in disbelief. It was one of the highlights that stuck with me in the original video. Thanks once again!

The 19 20 yard run at Vikings is the true Payton. Takkes it off taklkle. Burst. Puts his head down. Runs through a tackle then finishes off with heart inside the 5. Best 19 20 run of all time.

If I can barrow a line from a guy who wore pink an black... Walter Payton is truly the best there is, was, or ever will be. I been a Chicago Bears fan for 42 years and it is will forever pi$$ me off we won 1 sad Super Bowl with the greatest defense and greatest RB of all time. We should of won 2 or 3 or 4 if we had any of the hall of fame coaches in that era.

By all accounts he was a wonderful human being. I believe that! So two questions popped up in my head watching for the 88th time. 1. How many teammates who got in the way said that it was the hardest hit they took all day? 2. I would love to see the opposing teams injury report from the following day and the reason. Hey Jack Tatum was a huge fan of Walter. Respect! I would be remiss if I didn't say that God blessed us with him and may God bless his family and loved ones. Perseverance..

Great job by doing the tribute to the tribute as so many have coined it. And just about every response is... "I was looking for the original &..." Makes you wonder why in the hell CBS, NFL Films/Network don't post the damn original FFS. But any true Chicagoan will tell you, the best this city ever ever had or will have is Sweetness. #23 was a great basketball player & icon, but Payton was it. 11-1-99 was one of the worst days In my life as not just Walter died, but a part of every Chicagoan and football fan did as well. As they say... Not the biggest. Not the strongest. Not the fastest. Just the best. RIP Sweetness. One of a kind.

Thank you Alan for posting this fantastic tribute to a true hero. I really can’t stop watching it. It really helps me savor something special. As a beginning fan at 8 yrs old, I can remember watching the NFL today (which was my favorite show “you are looking LIVE”) and they concluded the 77’ year with this tribute to Payton and Carly Simon. Perfect! Nobody did it Better and the nicest guy around. While watching Payton every week I remember thinking how lucky are we that we have the best.

And since there was a bunch of Payton videos out there, I wanted to recreate that video I saw as an 8 year old kid myself and it stuck with me through the years. And since I didn't see the original one anywhere, I wanted to do my best to recreate that video and post it for all to who had seen it many years ago. Thanks once again!

I just want to say that I too have been looking for this wonderful tribute to Walter Payton for many years. I was 11 years old when I saw it. I was sitting in front of the TV and right after the NFL Today Show on CBS I recall Brent Musburger going right into the tribute at the end. I was mesmerized by it and it left a lasting impression on me over the years with Carly Simon’s Nobody Does It Better. I’ve never seen a better tribute and it still brings warm memories and even a tear at times. Perhaps, being 11, catholic school, sports and friends was my life. You knew the names and stats of every player. My dad would talk about Jim Brown and Gale Sayers but Walter Payton was the greatest running back I ever saw. I’ve talked about this video for many years and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting it.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt response, it was really humbling for me to hear that another Walter Payton fan remembered that video from the 70's. I myself was also mesmerized by that particular video, I remember them showing Bud Grant, (Head Coach of the Vikings at that time), he was watching a play where Walter had the ball and the camera just showed his entire face and eyes and his eyes went from right to left, and then he just shook his head in amazement because apparently, Walter just made a long incredible run for a touchdown. I tried to find some Bud Grant clips that showed that same expression, but never did find any. But I tried to make it as close as I remembered from that time (I was 9 years old, 53 now), and I'm glad there are others who remembered that video that are posting comments such as yours and that helped them reminisce back to that iconic video that CBS showed on air so many years ago. Thank you once again for your kind words.

The saddest thing and l’m a diehard Bear fan, is Ditka not calling #34 to score in the teams only super bowl win. Even the fridge scored in the 46-10 thrashing of the Patriots. I lost all respect for the coach. Walter didn’t publicly complain. He carried that team for years and for him to not score is a travesty!

Alan, Thanks for making this!!! I was totally trying to find this video a while back and couldn't believe I couldn't find it. I'd still like to see the original if it exists but great job recreating it. What I remember the most of all the "sweet" moves, and Energizer bunny-like, inability to tackle him, was Payton pressing up into a handstand after being tackled/pushed out of bounds. LIke he was saying, "I've got a lot more where that came from...you ain't seen nothing yet!" He had the talent and the personality. Before Jordan, Chicago had "Sweetness". Derek Rose for a year. Nothing close to that since then.
