@@jw9366 I don't blame Ditka for that. When the Bears scored their 46th point, it was still the 3rd quarter. Adding to that, the Pats were keying on Walter the whole game. There was one play near the goal line where Walter went right and 5 players went with him. IIRC, either McMahon or Suhey walked into the end zone to the left. I agree, though, it is sad that he didn't score.

STOP payton... and, it really couldn't be done... very engaging and classy individual too.. it's the reason why the NFL Man of the Year award is named the Walter Payton award...

Sanders had more agility and speed, but Payton had more power and he fought for every yard. 1970's Bears and 1990's Lions were both bad teams overall, but my money is on the Bears being worse. Payton had to carry the team for 7 or 8 years before other talented players came along to help them win the Superbowl in '85.

@@Allopientubefish2 And sadly, they never will. Not because they won't, but because the environment in Chicago will never allow a QB to thrive there. If Patrick Maholmes would have been drafted by the Bears, he would be on the scrapheap just like Trubisky sadly will. Asking a QB to do well in Chicago is like asking a great white shark to kill in the Sahara desert. Payton's speed and agility are really underrated because his highlights are usually slow motion for some reason. Watch live speed and you'll see he was just as quick through a hole as barry and AP. Walter was tougher and smarter than all of them. He ran mean, ran smart, and never gave up. He always got every inch possible every time he got the ball. And he put the same effort in for blocking, and receiving. It's why he is the best ever.

Nice spotlight on Walter. I've long thought that the best season a runningback ever had was OJ Simpson's 1973 season where he had 2,003 rushing yards, 12 touchdown on a team that was dreadful otherwise offensively. Buffalo that year had only 1,236 passing yards. Even in a 14 game season, that is horrible. OJ also played in Buffalo with the weather conditions. OJ did have Reggie McKenzie and Dave Foley on the offensive line at least. You may have changed my mind as to what runningback had to do the most heavy lifting in a team in a season. Which is why I love this channel. You'll never know what you'll learn. There are so many interesting stories lost in NFL history that know one wants to talk about, or cares about. Glad you guys do. Can't wait for the next one.
