Hey Nick. The reason Walther sends extra front sights is not because they break. They actually send them so you can change the elevation if your gun is shooting too low.

As I've found out since making the review. Still, it broke off on my PPQ after 2 years of ownership. Metal sights are the way to go for me.

This is the best review of the P99 I’ve seen. You completely solved the DA/SA/AS modes for me. It’s really cool that a striker firer has all these modes. Thank you!

pretty amazing that this gun STILL beats the brand new PDP compact as well as the PPQ sc. P99c is nearly the perfect CC weapon imo
@Av8torman422 жыл бұрын
Instead of carefully inserting the mag which you might mess up under stress, walther makes a grip extension sleeve for the full size mags. You can also use PPQm1 mags including the 17 round extension mags. IMO the best part of the P99 is it has the best out of the box double action trigger I have ever used.

Nice review! Excellent demonstration of the AS trigger mode. Walther P99 is a great pistol. The standard model and compact are both ideal choices for ccw. 2023 was last year of production for this pistol. Definitely a star for many years in Walther's production.

The 'DA' models of the Canik TP9 line also have this decockable DA/SA striker-fired system, and they are reportedly very well made while also quite affordable. They don't have one in a compact form-factor, though, as far as I know.

Whether they also have this kind of long-but-light 'anti-stress' mode is something I don't know, though.

The Canik TP9 is a Turkish clone of the Walther P99/PPQ. If I remember correctly, the PPQ M2 will even accept the TP9 18 round magazines. I've never shot a Canik though I have handled them and they feel nice. Based on my research they are a good value for the money, but my preference was just to save up the couple extra hundred and get the Walthers.

Good video. The Walther P99as is perhaps one the world’s most advanced semiautomatic pistol. The trigger features are unlike any other pistol and thus are somewhat intimidating. Many police departments and military outfits choose a different weapon believing the training for personnel would be too involved. Understandably, they need and want only to draw, point and fire.

Overall good review. Except here is some aditional info on the sights. The factory front sight on the P99 and PPQ DO NOT have any problem with falling out. All of the front sights come with an Allen screw that wedges the front sight in place from the bottom. I think only the very early P99s made in the early 2000s or earlier came without the screw. The extra front sights are all different heights so that you can adjust the elevation. They are not extras in case they fall out. It comes with five different height front sights. I also strongly recommend against the current production meprolight sights on the p99 or p99c because it makes the pistol shoot 4 inches high at 7 yards. The front sight is over .100 inch too short on the meprolights. On a P99 if you want night sights buy the Trijicons. The front and rear sight are the same height as each other on the Trijicon. I don't know why his front sight didn't have a set screw in it but you can even see in a little baggie that has his extra front sights that it came with the Allen wrench for the little set screw that holds the front sight in. So his gun was obviously supposed to be sold with the set screw installed when it was new
@T428PI3 жыл бұрын
Supporting info from the P99 manual. Elevation adjustments are made by using front sights of varying height. Steel Front Sights of varying height are an accessory item. If the shots group low, use a lower front sight. For high grouping, use a higher one.The front sights are numbered. The higher the number, the higher the front sight. Each stage results in a correction of the impact by about 2” (5 cm) over a 25 yards (25 m) distance from target.

Good video. I agree with you; very overlooked pistols. I only have the P99C because my state limits magazine capacity to 10 rounds so it doesn't make sense to get the full size. However, I did pick up a couple of full size mags that are neutered to 10 rounds just to have the extra grip length. Keep the videos coming. Bit jealous of your collection with both P99s, the PPQ AND a Beretta 92. All quality pistols.

This to me is the very best pistol design ever and the PPQ and the new PDP is really a continuation of the P99 minus the double trigger or Anti stress options but running the P99 in single action with the anti stress slack take-up pulled back is just like the PPQ trigger or new PDP the P99 is every bit as good as a PPQ or PDP for some reason the P99 just never really was embraced in the in the US l have two P99c 9mm and still use one of them for conceal carry and both have metro light night sights installed and prefer carrying it over my Sig P365 but it doesn't conceal as well as the P365

Agreed, the P99/P99c have become my two go-to pistols for just about everything I need a pistol for. I didn't think about how the front sights could have been different heights - admittedly I never even took them out of their plastic packaging.

AS is single action mode bcs firing pin is cocked - you see it, just trigger travel the distance of double action. Its something similar to P2000 CDA systems.
@pauldavies7786 Жыл бұрын
Actually it's not even that on the p99 this guy just doesn't understand how the trigger works. Whenever you Short stroke the gun it sets it up for single action mode the trigger is completely dead up until the single action point where the trigger can be locked in. This is in no way "as" mode as he put it that just means anti-stress that's the decocking double action trigger pull AKA anti-stress. Colion noir goes over the trigger properly if you are curious about it. As far as I know besides the S & W 99 and the p99 which are essentially the same gun, the only other gun that has this trigger is one of the early caniks after all they are now and always will be Walther clones.
@mrsebastian58433 жыл бұрын
FYI although i think you are right about the sights robustness, you are wrong about the fact why Walther includes several front sights. Its not because the polymer sights get rubbed off/down or because they are not rugged, but rather to adjust the elevation of point of impact. if you check the 4 different front sights included (3 included + one installed), you see that they are all numbered from 3,4,5-6. The number indicates the height of each in mm. Quoting from P99 manual: "ELEVATION Elevation adjustments are made by using front sights of varying height. Steel Front Sights of varying height are an accessory item. If the shots group low, use a lower front sight. For high grouping, use a higher one. The front sights are numbered. The higher the number, the higher the front sight. Each stage results in a correction of the impact by about 2” (5 cm) over a 25 yards (25 m) distance from target. To change the front sight, field-strip the pistol as described in section 4.1. Polymer Front Sight Unscrew the front sight screw with the 1.3 mm Allen wrench from the bottom of the front sight. Push the front sight out of the slide. Assembly is in reverse order. Screw in the front sight screw until it is flush with the base of the front sight (5.3 Fig. 3)." Quote end Which height to use best, depends very much on the ammunition type and weight. But i agree that adjustable iron sights would have been the better choice. Keep up the good work.
@nickoetken11223 жыл бұрын
Yes, I found this out later as to why they include several. I do hope Walther begins installing all of their pistols with more durable metal sights in the future though (like they do with the PPS).
@parryhooper3 жыл бұрын
great info! I imagine there is a very small group of owners that actually have done this. At that point they have all just swapped for better iron sights. I will eventually change mine.

I don't understand the purpose of AS mode. For me it is just DA/SA gun. I can't imagine why would anyone care about AS mode. It's longer pull but the force is same as SA mode.. So not really find it useful at all. But I like the gun. It sits well in my hand. It has controls that are easy to use. Why this gun over PPQ? Because PPQ does not have DA mode. So it's scary to carry one with round chambered. This has DA and has decocker and second strike ability which are very nice. AS mode? maybe just some marketing thing. Love the gun, but all this talk about AS mode.... there is much more to this gun than this strange mode.

The P99 Compact is becoming EXTREMELY hard to find - Walther only makes them in limited batches and once those sell out they are gone until the next batch in a few years. I was lucky enough my local sporting goods store had one in stock. The full size version is in continuous production and therefore traditionally much easier to find, but considering the big gun/ammo shortage going on now I certainly understand the frustration.

The Walther P99 failed in the market place simply because you could not safely carry it in the single action mode. This would have been possible if the Morons of Walther would have simply put a manual safety on the gun. To safely carry the P99 you must carry it in the double action mode and most people cannot hit much in double action mode unless its across the bar room table.

There is a firing pin safety like a Glock. It disengages only when the trigger is pulled, whether in single or double action.
