The P99 was the first firearm I ever bought, and is still a go-to favorite. AND coveted by anybody that's shot it. I've turned down some offers and will continue to do so. I may look into an upgrade (well, update), I've heard good things about the Q and even the Creed line, but the 99 is one of my best investments.

The P99 was beautiful in every way (without the allowance of 3rd party accessories). Shoots flat is good for those who are intimate with shooting at range. The extra long pull forced focus on the sights. Having a right index finger mag release allowed maintaining proper grip while grabbing the extra mag in your off hand for reload. While the lack of deep texture of the grip might be a problem the deeper finger grooves made up for that (I feel anyway). And though it might not be huge, lighter weight allowed maintaining a steady sight line. I am interested in the PDP though as it is cheaper....

@@krisbennett9852 yeah Glock can improve. They're not true perfection; they are glock perfection which means nothing. They need a better trigger, better sights, and better ergonomics (grip angle mainly). It's an unnatural grip angle. You need to learn to point the glock after years of training. Many gun companies have a natural point of aim like Walther, Springfield, CZ, Sig Sauer, Canik, S&W, and so many others. They all have a natural point of aim.

Walther is just that special company. They are different than all the rest. Every model firearm they produce are just great. I’ve owned more Walthers than any my other brand firearm. I’m a Sig guy in all honesty but on any day I’m feeling like I want a treat, I grab my pK or my ppk just for shitsngiggles. Smooth action and easy slides on them. too many some say. The PDP F has an unusually great grip and made for woman but I can attest that my mitts are larger than most and the gun seated into hand perfectly. You can’t go wrong and they have lifetime warranties at no cost to mail in or fix. Walthers are special.

The trick to the P99's trigger is to think of it like the P38. It's a DA/SA system, first pull is long, every pull after is crazy short and crisp. You also forgot to mention the very convenient cocked indicator on the back. Pro tip, if you already de-cocked the gun and want to use it in SA, do a brass check. Pulling the slide back about 5mm is all it takes to cock the striker.

Been using a Gen 1 P99 for years, and while the PDP may have all the bells and whistles, the ability to carry in DA mode is highly desirable. Springfield XD mags, at least the .40 standard length ones, can have the mag catch cut added and work perfectly in the P99. The only bad thing about the P99, especially in the later versions is the inability to put a red dot on the gun.

P99 trigger is awesome. Unbelievably short reset, which allows me to shoot it faster than any other pistol. Super crisp break. I would disassemble the P99 trigger bar and sear housing then put it in the PDP grip frame. P99 trigger is different but i would not say it is in any way inferior to the PPQ/PDP. I wish Walther kept with the stock P99/PPQ sights over the new design for Glock compatibility. I find the stock sights on the P99/ standard PPQ to be dead nuts accurate. Walther PPQ SC has PPS sights, so I installed XS F8 sights on my PPQ SC without any issues whatsoever. When I went to install Glock Ameriglo i-dot pros on my PDP, it was a NIGHTMARE.

My PDP feels really good to shoot and carry. The recoil other channels stress is severely overexaggerated. It's rapid fire capability is impeccable and it's chunky frame might be thicker than the rest, but it's very concealable for average sized MEN! Yes I said MEN. (Liberals melting down right now). The quality compared to other polymers screams GREATNESS. Especially when talking about the finish of the slide. It took a couple of weeks for my hand to conform to the grip, but when it finally did? It became my favorite polymer pistol to date. Just my opinion. I still prefer metal guns for general shooting though. CZ75B & Beretta 92fs Italy are my faves in metal 9mm

Great video Sootch! I liked the P99 from the Bond franchise, but I fell in love with it when I got the opportunity to handle a used model at my local shop. I ended up picking up a P99AS model in 9mm and it's my go to pistol. I love the AS trigger system; it makes follow up shots very accurate with the short reset while being safe to carry when decocked. I actually like the less aggressive texturing as it makes the pistol much more pleasant to shoot with my off-hand (whereas when I shoot my Gen 5 Glock with my off-hand it about as pleasant as getting smacked with a meat tenderizer). I definitely think the P99AS is still a worthy competitor to Walther's more contemporary pistols.

But this week I sold it and bought a PDP 4.5, just because I wanted a change in the ‘rotation’. A couple of things that I find better on the PDP are that my trigger finger doesn’t ride along the bottom of the trigger guard and the mega slide serrations are much more comfortable to grip. As I recall, the major complaints about the P99 was the kitschy traditional DA/SA & AS trigger w/decocker...as well as the Euro mag release. In the 2nd variants, the mag release has been "improved" ( lengthened )... also the "hump" inside of the trigger guard has be eliminated. The "AS", Anti-Stress trigger is now being appreciated much more for its adaptability to the shooter's desires...the great success of the CANIK TP9 demonstrated this by how it has set sales records and gained wide acceptance for a newly-introduced model from a Turkish manufacturer. Sometimes change can be difficult to accept.

20 years ago I had a P99 in 40 S&W. It was the most instinctive shooting gun that I ever had. I didn't need to use the sights to tell you where the hole would appear. However it was unreliable in feeding and I didn't end up keeping it. I got a PPQ a few years ago to replace it. While it had a better trigger, I didn't shoot it nearly as well. Back in January of 2020 I was eyeing a few NIB P99s on a auction site that weren't even being bid on. Problem was that within a few months you couldn't seem to buy them anymore at the $500. Don't know why.

I just picked up a new-manufacture P99AS a couple months ago, dated 2023 production. They're calling it the final edition, but they've been trying to kill it since 2011.

The P99 he purchased for this video is the original model, the one that James Bond uses. The newer models have more slide seriations and are also about $400-$500 cheaper.

@@Matt-to1bi I hear people saying that they are around $1200. That's what I keep seeing them listed for on gunbroker. However, someone listed one for $400 a few months ago and I snatched it up immediately.

I'm really thinking about buying the PDP. Is it a good idea to trade in my PPQ M2 or just buy the PDP?

I would keep your M2. I own one from 2016 and would never sell it. It's got some upgrades to the recoil spring, sights, and grip.

The Walther P-88 was legendary as the most factory-accurate 9mm production pistol, typically shooting 0.85" groups from Ransom Machine Rest at 25 yards using the M825 Ball ammunition then manufactured by Federal Cartridge Company (the most accurate factory ammunition in the world at that time). I was always curious if the P-99 retained the accurizing engineering design of the P-88? At 19:07 Hootch shows these three (P-99, PPQ, PDP) slides from the inside side-by-side-by-side, and the reason the P-99 shoots "flatter" is obvious! There is *more metal* up-front in the P-99 slide! Just as adding the mass of a red-dot sight to the PDP causes more muzzle-flip than the PPQ, having *more forward mass* causes the P-99 to *return to rest* faster!

I hope on day Walther will bring back the P99 AS but updated while keeping most of the same aesthetics and geometry. Maybe better grip texture, a real pic rail (maybe as a steel component separate from the frame like the Zev Tech OZ9), improved magazines that can hold more rounds in the same size, fully ambidextrous controls (which some rare gen 2 P99s have already), give it tritium sights, an even better trigger, and maybe partner up with Jarvis Custom for some hand-fitted barrels with a premium PVD finish. Oh, and of course, have the gun rated for +P+.

I have the P99 QA and absolutely lover from the first time picking it up to shooting it now. Haven’t had to adjust the sights since it shoots exactly like the target it came with from the factory and like you did it shoots really well rapid fire because it stays on target pretty easily. Great review 👍

My P99, P99c and PPQ M1 are my favorite Walthers. They all share 15, 17 and 20 rd mags. I’m not into optics on pistols and the mags for the PDP aren’t compatible which makes it not so desirable for me.

Big fan of the P38, P99, and PPQ here. Have not quite warmed up to the PDP yet. Have three P38's, a Gen 1 P99, and a PPQ. Not sure I'll go for a PDP. The looks of the PDP Slide serrations are a bit off putting.

I really like my P 99 AS. A little practice with the unusual trigger pull and you will be surprised how well you will shoot it. Reset is fantastic and you will find that it shoots very flat and you won't pull shots left and low (for right handers) in rapid fire. Try that with your Glock and it's standard trigger. The Walther P 99 AS makes for a great carry firearm if you are carrying a Glock 19 size firearm. The paddle magazine release rocks for me, no repositioning my grip with my medium size hands. I also have a PPQ and its a has a great trigger, so I'm a fan. Pick up the boxy Glock and try to make it fit your hand. Then pickup one of these Walther's, unless you have very large hands they fit like a glove. In my opinion only, the lowly Taurus TX 22 feels better in hand. Great firearms, thank you for the review.

You might want to have a gunsmith check that P99 trigger. The one I had did not come all the way back like yours does. I sold it to get a PPQ Q4 TAC because of the proprietary rail and the red-dot optics ready capability. But I would say that the P99 had a trigger very similar to the PPQ, except for the AS aspect which for a self-defense and LE pistol I would say makes it better.

would you say getting TALON Grips for the Walther P99 is a must then? And would you recommend the rubber or granulated? Great video! Bought a P99 10 years ago and haven't really messed with it to much.

*The PPQ M1 is the best semi-auto pistol in the world, and Walther hasn't come up with anything equaling, or surpassing it in ergonomics, or function.* *The HK VP9, and the SAR9 come close, but "no cigar" yet those two pistols are better than all of Walther's new entries in this class.* *I wish I would have bought three PPQ M1s, as California DOJ doesn't see me fit to own one anymore. (although I carry one to this day, since they were first introduced)* *Oh, BTW, I would love to own a P38.(what an iconic pistol, with a cool factor of 10)*
