Thank you for clear and concise instructions. The slight toe-in on the 2nd follower step is the winner for me. I have never herd any other instructor mention that, either in person or on KZbin University. Thank you, sir

Awesome! That’s why I do this so the little tips you get make a big difference. The answers are in the technique. Pointing your toe Diagonal to Centre is the trick for the whisk in this lesson. See you in the next lesson!

This is excellent stuff. I particularly like your refernce to "asking your teacher", and the introduction to some concepts of leading, which is normally neglected. As a very experienced dancer, I wish I'd been able to see this video years ago.

I think it’s a fantastic tutorial and your passion for technique shines through! I have a little something to add, if I may from the woman’s perspective. As a beginner I remember finding this figure extremely challenging. It looks so simple but there are hidden perils! My teacher at the time never taught me about hip positions, just he showed me where I needed to be, which as you demonstrate is just tucked behind the man’s right hip. What I found so difficult (and actually never mastered it with this teacher) was keeping myself just behind him in the drive step out of the whisk position (up on toes) - I just kept trying to get round his leg as it was in my way! I never did drive exercises and therefore had zero awareness of how important the drive is and where my spine should be and so on. But these basic steps have the whole A-Z of ballroom dancing in them, as you know only too well. You are much more experienced than I am but just because I want through so much pain trying to achieve these basic actions, with my first teacher, without any awareness and understanding of the importance of the foundation and the actual construction I imagine there might be others struggling too. If that is the case then to spend a great deal of time on learning the beautiful basics will make you the best dancer you can be and will be much less painful and easier when you attempt the more advanced figures. Hope that wasn’t too long-winded!

This is great. Thanks for sharing! I teach in frameworks. So the issue is not understanding the framework to use when going into Promenade or when Crossing. If you know the Rules within the Framework you’ll nail it every time. Too many teachers don’t get into rules and specifics whereas I enjoy the logic and structure because that allows the musicality to flow when it becomes automatic.

PS…I have just thought of a couple of other aspects of this figure I found really hard. The balance in the whisk position up on toes and not moving inside the frame - a whole new topic - I would swing my hips and shoulders away from the man and lose my balance in the process. Ok I’ll shut up now!

Thank you for a nice in-depth comment here and before! When it comes to Balance (Centres), Posture, Hold etc I deal with those issues which are more concerned with Promenade than just the Whisk in our popular course Ballroom Mastery Academy and inside our membership Ballroom Mastery Access as it’s a big subject and required many approaches.
