I saw Wanda Jackson at the Grand Ol' Opry on Sat., June 17, 2017. Her granddaughter escorted her out to center stage, where Wanda sat on a stool and sang three songs. It was a real treat to see such a historical musical icon.

Always thought "I Gotta Know" was a brilliant song, switching between country and rock n roll like that, Wanda pulls off both styles beautifully and looks pretty as pie while doing so.

What a treasure this "Ranch Party" clip is. Two great acts, Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids. Both were pioneer Rock & Roll acts, as Rockabilly emerged from Country and moved towards R&R. Neither is in the R&R Hall of Fame, although both acts should have been there long ago as some of the first inductees. This is actually 1957, as that as the only TV season "Ranch Party" was broadcast. Wanda is age 20 here; the Collins Kids, are ages 15(Lorrie) and 13(Larry) here. Wanda, of course is always impressive and a joy to watch. The Collins Kids are equally impressive, not only for their ability to rock the devil out of a simple folk song, but also in such professional ability at 15 & 13. Lorrie never misses a beat, even when surprised by Larry's "arm around her" at the song's lyric. Rather than irritation at Larry, Lorrie seems to find her little brother's prank humorous and she playfully pats him on the head and drapes her arm around his shoulder at the end. That playfulness lets Lorrie & Larry bounce off each other instinctively, and is one of the many reasons the Collins Kids are such a great live act, and a charming, pleasant surprise in early TV!
@pouglwaw5932 Жыл бұрын
Truthfully and beautifully said. Larry and Lorrie added a sweet playfulness to rock music that was missing in other people's renditions of those songs. Yes, the way they took a simple folk song ballad and "rocked the devil out of it" was a specialty of theirs. My favorite is how they rocked "Blue Moon of Kentucky"

The scratchiness in her voice and the bluntness of some of her lyrics must have definitely pushed some buttons during her times, and that's why I love her music, she's like a pre-'60s Janis Joplin!

Maybe I'm dissecting things too much, but I picked up on something. Watch her as she sings each "If our love's the real thang...." part. 1st time, she's delivering it coyly. 2nd time, it's a little more, "I'm asking you this! Aren't you paying attention?!" 3rd time, stares wide-eyed, directly at him, like, "I ain't kidding around!" Then, cuts her eyes to the right while raising a brow, like, "There you have it. That's where I'M coming from! And, I mean it!"

Larry and Lorrie had a playful vibe between them, and Lorrie said she always had to be watchful because she never knew what Larry would do next. Also, she had to be careful not to get tied up by Larry's guitar cord as he boogied around her. Priceless interaction while it lasted.
