"A couple of comic strips." There are 10 books collecting the comics, each of about 90-100 pages. So almost 1000 pages worth of comic strips. I grew up with the 90s animated series based on the books, and later read the comics and the books, and I adore it. I've been to the Moominvalley theme park in Japan! And somehow I did not know this game existed, so I'm very excited to hear about it!! Also that is very funny origin story for your introduction to the Moomins.

If you really love Moomin I really suggest visiting the original Moomin World park in Naantali, Finland. It is more of a theme park for kids but still worth a visit for true fans. Where else could you go to hug a life sized Moomintroll? Finland is also otherwise great for visiting in the summer, especially when the weather is good.

I actually had a classmate in college that was as rabid about the lore of the Moomin series as some people are about Lord of the Rings, which I always found very funny.

I mean, can you find any other franchise with nearly an overtly bisexual/biromantic character like Moomintroll? I certainly can't, especially not from the period of time back when Moomin was a comic.

That reminded me of Tove Jansson’s illustrations for The Hobbit, which are absolutely amazing

Seeing as this video about this game alone fascinates me more than all the LOTR movies and games together, I can see why.

It's kind of funny because I'm from Sweden but my entire family is from the Swedish speaking side of Finland, so I grew up listening to the audio books that were narrated by Tove Jansson herself. They were a huge part of what drove me to pester my mother to teach me how to read and write, and I've been a voracious reader ever since.

We had Moomin in South Africa also, a true classic for us in our early years. Was in Afrikaans, but as nostalgic as always ❤. P.S.: Im 34 and can still remember some of the lyrics to the opening themesong 😅

What you were saying about American cities/suburbia is very reminiscent of the stuff NotJustBikes talks about. If you haven't heard of them before, you might want to check them out. They go into a ton of detail on why our cities are so borked and how they could be improved and how the kinds of designs decisions they describe actually play out in other countries. It's all really interesting and only mildly depressing. Also, "fun fact" mandatory parking minimums are, at least partially, responsible for why we have such giant parking lots and they're based on completely made up figures. Bonus :fun fact": The devs of either Cities Skylines or Sim City originally wanted to be able to model real cities, but when they actually looked at American cities they realized that they were dominated by parking lots, which made everything look really boring, so they decided to cut parking and forgo the real cities.

The Moomin series is absolutely lovely, it was quite popular in Europe. The kind of kids books that touch adults as well. Re: trolls. Looking back at old folklore, a lot of creature names were used interchangeably, like synonyms for "mystical thing". Some were cute, some - human-like, some were even beautiful, despite being trolls/dwergs/alvs/whatevers. The common explanation is that they could change their appearance, but the real reason is that the folks making up these stories didn't really care for taxonomy and distinct classifications. Hence the occasional cute troll books, art, toys, etc. in those countries.

I wonder what this game’s release will do for Moomins awareness in the US (where it’s not very well-known); maybe if this game gets enough attention from US audiences they’ll officially release the ongoing Moominvalley animated series 🤔 We’ve talked about topics like green spaces and walkability in my environmental studies coursework, which you reminded me of.

caught my sisters opening some kinder egg like things with moomin figurines, and they asked me if i wanted to help, but i'm really not much of a chocolate person so i said no. apparently they just wanted the figurines and intended to just put the chocolate away for later.

The Moomins are from Finland, Tove Jansson was a swedish-speaking finn. It's like saying poutine is from France.
@Reddotzebra

Also "Finland and Sweden specifically" is kind of whack as well. They were also super popular in Japan, one of the best animated series of the franchise was done there, and then they became super popular in America once that series was translated. These were not the usual "They did the animé after the author dies" deals either, Tove signed off on it.

8:45 There is a Swedish-speaking autonomous archipelago in Finland, the Åland islands. Swedish language has full and near-exclusive official status in that place. Imagine of the USA let Lousiana keep exclusive use of French for absolutely everything, without English holding official status there, and that would be it.

Reminds me more of the fact, that at least in Puerto rico they ALLOW you to go to school in Spanish. With the low price exchange of not getting to vote in the federal elections. Which I'm sure was a great help for the 13% of mainland US population who NATIVELY speak Spanish, rather than something like Navajo. But in schools like Uvalde they speak by different terms, actions speak louder than words.

I liked the TinTin movie too. I thought they were making another one? I don't know USAstuff well enough so my comparison would be if they made a Wallace and Gromit game. (Maybe there already are one?) I only read some of the Moominbooks and seen parts of the tv serie, but, I do recommend finding the story about the Invisible child. Look Wander, they are Coppers. They are not employed to think, they are imployed to follow the Orders and Rules.
