That last comment about the game getting updates and getting better over time makes me think of an incremental incremental game; an incremental game where you slowly unlock incremental game updates incrementally. I'm not sure how that would be different from just a deeper layered incremental game, but I think it's interesting. You mention fairly often that you should make an incremental game. You could release a simple incremental game, then provide semi-regular updates to incrementally scale the complexity of the end game.

There is a small idle game based that idea! I don't think I can post the link to the game here, but it's called "Version Control", it should be easily found on google.

This... This is how most of these games work, this particular game was being updated very regularly for a couple of years with more layers of content to get to where it is now. And Realm Grinder which wander has mentioned in a couple of previous games, oh boy does it have all the player agency he's looking for in these games, but I don't believe he's progressed far enough to see it, as for new people that'd probably be a week of playing idly.

You might be interested in CivIdle, a game that ironically doesn't hit the idle aspect until way later compared to this one. It's free and on Steam, and it has an optional chat integrated that, at the time of my last session, was super helpful in learning about the more intricate parts of the game.

Someone mentioned this was here on this game's discord, and that comment at 5:00 has me smiling for reasons a new player won't discover for a very very long time. Stick with this one, it's a good game. And it is still getting updated, with an quite active little community, and so much to discover as you keep doing more prestiges. And, really, there is a very very wide variety in ways that the game can be tackled as you enter into the mid game. Be warned, it is a long one, even by idle game standards. Heck, the third prestige tier is really where most people would say the game starts in earnest, with the leadup to it being more like the tutorial. This isn't a game that stops throwing new stuff at you after a week or even a month of playing.

I totally get your point about incremental games and how you want the genre to progress, but this one is truly an old school idle game and it is one of the better ones in it's niche. Evolve is a couple of years long to complete. I've even switched over to using an automation program so I only control changing the settings and programming depending on which achievements and goals I'm going for since it's basically a matter of looping prestiges at my stage.

There is an odd bit of balance when it comes to these games. So many have multiple branches of progression, but you typically end up going down each at an equal pace without the ability to choose just one or two paths to specialize in. This is tied into the way costs scale as you go down each path, getting more expensive for that path alone. I think one way to circumvent this is to reduce the cost scaling but spread it across all paths. So if you get something on Path A, the next thing on both A and B(and all other paths) get slightly more expensive. This could allow you to dive deep into a path or two but make it harder to really branch out. You can add a cap to the progression so that no matter how long you wait, or how many resources you have, you can't get everything, but you can include increases to the cap as side upgrades for doing a balanced path build, a perk for spreading yourself out. Like a tracker off to the side that is a checklist of X unlocks in Y paths for additional progress cap. You can also add further progression cap through Meta progress. The cap should be able to be increased just enough that, by endgame in a game with 4-6 progression paths, you can fully traverse one initial path to it's end if you specialize, with a few extra to dabble in one or more other paths. This would be, roughly, about 1/3 of the total potential path unlocks, or 1/2 of each path if spread out for the side cap increases. This would lean into diverse play styles, long term playability, and build theory crafting. The other thing this does is ensure there is a proper end game goal, not just unlock everything and prestige ad nauseam. one or more goals to achieve or task to complete that may be selectable or even random and would push you towards certain paths.

This game is super glacial in later stages. I prestiged once and that took me a LONG time(i think it was somewhere around a month), and I feel like it would take at best many many months and at worst years to beat this game fully.

summary of the base benefits for all species types (plant, fungi, animal) for when you eventually prestige: plants don't use stone, its auto produced as amber, fungi don't collect food, they turn lumber into food with a unique building, animals need to collect lumber, stone, and food, but they get much more useful benefits for after the early game has started

I am vaguely working on a something that is essentially going to be a turn based incremental. If anyone remembers the WoW Garrison - think of a game centered around that as turn based. 1: Send your adventurers to explore regions. 2: Adventurers find resources, kill monsters, find new regions, etc 3: Plow resources into your base. Repeat

I propose more incremental games should have impending threats. Dangers that come after a period of time that could cause the player to die and have to start over. This will encourage the player to have a game plan even if improvised to try to progress as possible. Instead of the player being able to fool around all the time with effectively little purpose. That is what I want for all incremental games.
@MechagirlSachiko7 сағат бұрын
Die and start over? Hahaha no. All that effort down the drain because you screwed up in some way would detract from playing. Threats that hinder your progress if not dealt with but let you continue would be better.

the only real diplomatic path I'm aware of is way later in like the space age but other than that the only benefit for good opinion is they won't attack back, once you have a good army (or have spent the last 3 hours reducing their army to nothing via spies) there is no point in not systematically bullying them for resources
