Nice overview, but assumes the wireless mic receiver outputs mic-level, not line-level audio, and that the receiver also takes the mono mic signal and puts it onto both the left and right channels of the mic receiver output jack. The Vixia mic-in jack is actually set up to take a TRRS (tip-ring-ring-sleeve) plug, similar to an Iphone earphone/mic plug. Going up from the tip of the plug, the signals to the Vixia are left-audio/right-audio/ground/power. If you want to use the power connection, you need to use a TRRS plug wired correctly to use the sleeve power. Plugging a regular stereo plug (TRS) into the Vixia mic-in jack shorts power to ground in the camera, but that is OK since the power has a fairly large resistor in series and is current limited internally. If you plug a mono mic with a TS (tip-sleeve) mono plug, you will get audio recorded only on one of the stereo channels. A mono to stereo adapter will put the mono signal on both left and right channels and correct this. The power connection in the camera is shorted in this case. If a mono mic relies on power applied to the tip of the connection, as a condenser mic might, it won't work. You need to use a TRRS plug and wire it to provide needed power on the tip of the mono mike . Google for circuits. In my case, I had a wireless mic receiver that output a mono, line-level signal. To adapt to the TRRS input of the Vixia, I wired an adapter circuit with two resistors on a small piece of circuit board. The two resistors first reduce the mono line-level receiver to mic level. I then wire the reduced level to both the left and right connections on a TRRS plug. I then make the ground connection directly from the sleeve of the receiver connector plug to the 2nd ring connection of the TRRS plug going to the Vixia. I leave the sleeeve connection unconnected on the plug. Using a TRRS plug avoids shorting power to ground in the camcorder, and may save slightly on battery life. In this setup, the power connection from the camera is not needed. Sounds complicated, but works without thinking once the adapter is wired up. An excellent write-up on making various adapters for the mic input of a Vixia is at: www.instructables.com/id/How-to-connect-an-external-microphone-to-a-Canon-c/

"You do need a powered mic for this to work" is probably the BEST piece of info that I've seen on this topic. And this after searching support pages on Canon's own site, trying to figure out why the mic I use for Skype wasn't doing squat when plugged into my camera. OOOOOOOOOOOH! I have no idea what a powered microphone is (other than the wireless one I see in your video, but you've sent me in the right direction. Thankyou!
@Wanderer001_Reviews8 жыл бұрын
A powered mic is one that does not draw power from the mic port on the camera itself. Rather it has its own power supply. That power supply could be for a battery or electrical outlet. The R XXX camcorders from Canon all have this issue.

Wanderer001: I appreciates you doing this as It addresses my issue. To wit: I bought an XEXIA R52 because i saw the words "stereo audio recording". I make musical instruments which involve automated audio panning - so i wanted a camera in which i could record the audio from the instrument through wires as opposed to a mic and have the benefit of capturing stereo panning. My only othr option is dealing with it in i Movie or whatnot, but then I have to worry about syncing and this small job just got horrible big again. Now here's my problem I was hoping you could help me with: I can find the assignments for the audio input jack in the pdf manual. I noticed your Audio Technica wireless has the three contact 3.5 mm plug and the Canon manual does say they make a surround mic you can use instead of the internal one - so all looks good - but i can't find the tip/ring/sleeve assignment so i can make a cable that will send stereo info into the camcorder. Do you happen to have this info?

Thank you for the video! I was going to ask if the microphone must be one that has its own power supply, but I see you have already answered that down below. Reading reviews on Amazon, twice I've read that the Vixia R400 can only work with a microphone that has its own power supply, which means a little battery. That is no big deal, as long as I know which microphone to buy before hand.

You never got to a very important point- how do you adjust the input level on the camera? Recording music in various settings demands that you may have to turn up, or turn down the input signal. If you fail to do that, loud music could potentially damage the camera, and it certainly would be distorted on playback. I'd be very thankful to hear about that. Thanks

If they are all in the same area of the room you are going to be looking at a shotgun mic. Like (www.rodemic.com/microphones/stereovideomicpro) or (www.rodemic.com/microphones/videomicpro). Keep in mind that the HF R400 needs a power source for a mic. It will not power most mics that are plugged directly into the camera. So, I'm a music teacher that wants to record concerts of my students. I have a H4N Zoom that I plug into the camera. I have the H4N all set up with the mic level I want. However, the camera is auto-adjusting the sound so the soft parts of the concert sound like crap (because of the hiss) and then the sudden loud sections sound awful as well (because the camera can't adjust instantly to the sound). Is there any way to set the recording level on the camera to a static level and not change based on the amount of sound coming in? Any help would be appreciated! I just tried it again and I even switched it to "M" on the "Mic. Level" and put the recording level lower. It STILL auto adjusted. It is SO frustrating.
@Wanderer001_Reviews10 жыл бұрын
Ok, I was going to suggest lowering the Mic. Level on the camera as well before setting up the H4N Zoom. Have you tired using the preset audio setting on the camera for concerts? @opmsmusic10 жыл бұрын
Wanderer001 I unfortunately can't use the audio presets with anything plugged into mic jack. It instantly turns it to "standard" and is grayed out. I called Canon support about the issue and the guy I talked to basically said "what you're trying to do is beyond the scope of this camera because it's a consumer camera rather than a "pro"sumer camera. Truthfully, I think that is a bullshit answer. If I set the recording level at 10%, it auto adjusts for the situation and makes the sound louder. If I set the recording level at 100%, it auto adjusts for the situation and makes the sound softer. It's just unbelievable that I can't just set it to a level and have it not adjust. I even asked about a firmware update that might change it - no luck. I don't want to buy a $1600 camera so I can pick up sound at a decent quality. The video in this situation isn't really even that big of a deal. So annoying. Thanks for the response though!!!!

The camera still self-adjusts. My theory on this is that the input "level" control is more of a pre-gain control. In this case, the "pre-gain" only controls the level of the signal before it hits the Auto Level Control circuit in the camera. The ALC circuit in the camera is never actually disabled. I look at this adjustment as being just a built in attenuator. It does help with reducing and eliminating distortion from a "hot" signal going to the input, BUT it does not disable the auto level in the camera. I think the labelling is a bit deceptive, since it is not a true level control.
@opmsmusic9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! It's just really frustrating because I know how to set the levels correctly when I do an audio recording. I just wish that I could do the same with video! (without having to import the whole concert and pair the good audio with the video) Oh well. We're just recording for the kids to watch in class, parents to watch online, and for posterity. We're not making any money! haha

I had a quick question. I recorded an interview with the external mic, and unfortunately, I think the battery must've been failing on the mic, because I get a lot of static from the mic. So much static that the interview is unusable. Here's my question: I know that on professional video cameras, there is a "camera mic" and "plug-in mic", and that if there is ever an issue with the plug-in mic, you can always resort to the camera mic, and even though the quality won't be as good because of the distance from the subject, at least the interview can be heard faintly. Can I do that -- are there two tracks of audio recorded once a mic is plugged in, and I can somehow switch off the recording of the audio that was recorded by my crappy mic?
@Wanderer001_Reviews6 жыл бұрын
I hate to say it but you are looking for a little too much from this consumer level camera. If you use an external mic that is the only audio that is recorded. It bypasses the on board mics once something is plugged in. Sorry.

@Wanderer001_Reviews9 жыл бұрын
+Interface Death There should be no issue with the mic. The issue is the camera. One of the issues with the cheaper R400 line is that you need to have a powered mic. The RODE VideoMic Go does not have its own power source rather it uses what it can draw off the camera. The R400 does not output enough power through the mic port to power any mic. So the only mics that can be used have to have their own power supply.

***** Ok last thing I can suggest that will be simple is try using VLC media player. It will load just about ever codec under the sun and if that does not do it then I will start testing things out on my camera to see what might be going on.
