Deakin's is the GOAT, the way he molds his style to tell the best version of the stories he helps tell is the peak of the art form. People like Greg Frasier (in my top 5 favorite DP's) or Chivo create a much flashier look, but they also risk bringing attention to themselves. Roger feels like as much a story teller as he is a DP.

I think Deakins kept the other guy dark because of his character. Almost a deal with the devil. The kid is in the light. There's even horns made from the mirror behind.

Looking quickly there’s probably 3 different focal lengths used (35mm, 50mm, 85mm? maybe longer depending on the size of the sensor) as the conversation unfolds. The shots get tighter, the backgrounds magnify and soften while the camera sits in the same position.

Cinematography is sometimes less mystical and romantical than what people makeit. It’s very technical more than anything, and techniques can be taught, learned and mastered.

I’m going to begin a class on basic cinematography lighting and editing and wondering if you could offer my students any kind of a discount if we can get 6 to 10 people to subscribe to your patron is there any chance of getting a discount I’d love for them to have it and just looking for some incentivefor them to subscribe your stuff is gold my friend. Thank you so so much.

i don't think there is a way to do bulk discounts on Patreon. just sign up a few and share the log in details 👍

so wot if the dir wants a wide , or there is some good reason for the need for a wide of some sort ,showing more of the location , even if you think the dir is a clown . Turn the table like the others and just cheat it for these other shots , audience will never know , or just keep it as the one table at an odd angle to all the others , audience might think this is strange as they have probably been in a restaurant . What say you , noble guardians of the light ?

I have to disagree right up front: there is nobody doing anything ever better than Janusz Kaminski. Let alone two people talking ä.

If you have a month to light the scene and 50 18k HMI,s :) But I would add Barry Ackroyd to the list

@@robinprobyn1971 well, there must be some yota of talent that brought you into this position. I presume Kaminski could light a scene brilliantly with an Aputure 300x, if he had to. Ever saw Amblin‘ by Spielberg (not lensed by Kaminski)? You already see all the talent in an early short film.

@@of1300 relax man . He has a rep to be slow and use a ton of lights . But yeah I think he has a decent future ahead of him. But he did get the shutter angle wrong on that one scene ..no ? Private Ryan

@@robinprobyn1971 when it comes to Kaminski, i am so in awe I can’t relax. That’s the whole fun of it. Deakins to me is great but: he doesn’t do much anyone else wouldn’t do somehow similarly. And it’s nit like other cinematographers need time to light as well. Being fast is in itself not a virtue. It’s just saving money. Who needs to playing the high level game?
