I was living in LA when this was filmed listening to this takes me back to that time. If you weren't there it's difficult to understand but LA in the '80s had its own vibe, it was a universe unto itself. People hated it because of the masses of humanity overpopulation the traffic but that era spawned so much creativity so much artistic expression sure there was a lot of cloning but there was a lot of amazing music art and movies that came out of that era. This movie is a case in point. If you weren't there I don't blame you for not understanding but if you were, you know just what I'm talking about.

If you lived in Los Angeles in the 80’s this film captured it perfectly. I’m not referring to the glitzy Los Angeles of the 80’s with the showtime Lakers and the bright lights of Los Angeles, it captured the Neo-noir atmosphere that most people who lived there remember. It showed you the dark and seedy side of the city from the cops POV. Truly one of the most underrated films of all time.

@jaykay638710 ай бұрын
Totally agree. I think it is the best one ever. Of course, many had been done by then, Friedkin himself directed the famous French Connection, and Bullitt is well known but I think this one tops both of them. What puts it over the top is the acting of Peterson and Pankow in the cars, Peterson is out of his mind and Pankow is losing his shit in the back! You couldn't possibly ratchet the tension any higher, they had just killed a guy and are driving the wrong way down an LA freeway at rush hour, totally insane!
@richardl.50547 жыл бұрын
Amazing to think that William Petersen starred in two quintessential '80s movies in consecutive years, To Live And Die In L.A. in 1985 and Manhunter in 1986, both of which also had killer soundtracks. The rest of the cast is incredible, too: Willem Dafoe, John Pankow, John Turturro, Dean Stockwell, even Jane Leeves in a bit part.
@andrewgardner56786 жыл бұрын
Both were directed by guys from Chicago which were William friedkin and Michael Mann.
@jeffplissken89964 жыл бұрын
The best part is that Petersen was basically just a theater guy before it, his only on screen role before this was just a bartender with one line in Thief, where he was just another guy that gets roughed up by James Caan. Next thing he’s playing a guy just as tough and cool as James Caan.

Didn't see the movie until years later because I didn't think it sounded all that interesting. In fact, the movie itself barely got noticed at the time---I only found out about from watching a Siskel & Ebert show at the time. After having seen it, I can say that it's a certified near classic, and it's nice to see that rep has grown over the years.

Peffectly described. "Dark yet cool vibe that I can't quite explain". I know what you mean. A lot of 80's crime movies have perfect soundtracks that capture that feeling. I've been listening to a lot of Howard Jones recently, and he's kind of the same way.

To this day, this is my "benchmark" album to play when I want to show off the sound of my stereo system. It is, IMHO, one of the best sounding recordings ever made. The sonic range that it covers will really put a system through it's paces.

Tried it myself and I wholly concur! Excellent! Easily one of the best soundtracks of all time. Especially enjoy "Dance Hall Days".

Great movie. Love the ending. Directed by the great William Friedkin. The Exorcist and French Connection are on his belt for director...

I was never a Wang Chung fan, but I could listen to this song again and again. One of my all time favorites.

I put myself through college in the mid-eighties by working in the college print shop using an offset printing press. When this movie came out, it added some real glamour and excitement to the job. The print forgery scene with Willem Dafoe is still one of my favorite scenes in any movie. Never tried forging money, though . . .

I was born in 1975 so I was an 80s child, and wouldn't have it any other way! I used to love the summers doing stuff with my friends like they did on Goonies! What a great time!

Such nostalgia... I remembered ramping up this song along with the soundtrack of Miami Vice while cruising the city streets and boulevards in my then '74 Ford Gran Torino at night... The 80's was and still the best.

God I love this comment... I miss the gritty 80's.. I love all gritty crime films during that period of time, including the over-the-top ones like Scarface.

I have to admit that all the things he did on duty as a secret service agent required no bravery at all, but off duty jumping off that bridge required all the bravery on the world. What a brave man.

Wes Bervig that is one thing in life I can not do . I would be the one person out of thousands that had the damn accident . His character , hmmm, ok . I think that is when people really started noticing Willem Dafoe though . Perfectly creepy .

This movie so far ahead of its time. Can't believe its a 35 year old film . And the soundtrack is still fresh and new after all these years. Miss the 80s.

This is a great video. Love the Friedkin cameos. After a decade-long slump, this film was his critical comeback but, sadly, not a financial one. Still, not every director has four masterpieces (French Connection, Exorcist, Sorcerer, To Live and Die) in their filmography, not to mention an Oscar on the mantle. That's achievement enough for a seat on the Hall of Fame express. Nowadays, the man successfully directs operas!

To this day, To Live and Die in LA is one of the best films I've ever seen. There was just something so raw and visceral about it. Plus the entire soundtrack is Wang Chung! 🔥

In the heat of the day Every time you go away I have to piece my life together Every time you're away In the heat of the day In the dark of the night Every time I turn the light I feel that God is not in heaven In the dark of the night The dark of the night I wonder why I live alone here I wonder why we spend these nights together Is this the room I'll live my life forever I wonder why in LA To live and die in LA I wonder why we waste our lives here When we could run away to paradise But I am held in some invisible vice And I can't get away To live and die in LA If I let myself go And for where I just don't know I'd maybe hit some cold new river That led out to the sea An unknown sea I'd either swim or I'd drown Or just keep falling down and down I think its that, that makes me quiver Just to keep falling down Down, down, down I wonder why I live alone here I wonder why we spend these nights together Is this the way I'll live my life forever I wonder why in LA To live and die in LA In every word that you say I feel my freedom slip away I feel the bars come down around me And I can't get away I can't get away I wonder why I live alone here I wonder why we spend these nights together Is this the room I'll live my life forever I wonder why in LA To live and die in LA I wonder why we waste our lives here When we could run away to paradise But I am held in some invisible vice And I can't get away To live and die in LA I can't get away To live and die in LA I can't get away To live and die in LA I can't get away To live and die in LA I can't get away To live and die in LA

Wang Chung stepped outside the box for this soundtrack. The songs were on point and delivered on the great scenes to the movie "To Live and Die in L.A." ... just an epic movie, very underrated. Another wonder of the 80's.

I happen to be a major fan of 2Pac, but I have always found this version to be much superior and a better song. Everything from the time period, to the New Wave genre, to the talents of Wang Chung make this a wonderful song.
