In general, the current official balls weights of 2.7gr is the most hurdle preventing table tennis to spread popularity in social sport. A new lightweight 2gr standard balls must be the future for table tennis. I personally see that lots of commercial table tennis clubs owners convert their facilities into badminton/billards/.. facilities. They leave out of table tennis busines. They say that almost of all table tennis beginning players can not dare to sacrifice few years for training to reach the level of playing amateur games of the current heavyweight 2.7gr balls table tennis. So almost all new players leave table tennis after few weeks trying before they can get funs from playing amateur games. Commercial table tennis clubs owners always lose almost all their new beginning players clients after few days of trying. You can understand : life is busy, nobody, except professionals, wants to pay few years for training to reach possible level of playing amateur games. The new lightweight 2gr balls soound so werd. But lightweight 2gr balls really very easy to play for beginning players. Lightweight 2gr balls table tennis require few weeks for training to reach level of playing amateur games of lightweight 2gr ball table tennis version, instead of few years for training to reach level of playing heavyweight 2.7gr table tennis version. Lightweight 2gr balls will pull and keep more billions of new players, and togethers create big markets for table tennis equipment/services business. HEAVYWEIGHT BALLS ARE STUPID FOR BUSINESS, FOR TABLE TENNIS POPULARITY, FOR ENTERTAINING, AND FOR SOCIAL PLAYERS TOO (PLAYERS PAY MORE OFFGAME TIME FOR GOING PICKING-UP BALLS).

I was trying to compare his BH to FZD, but FZD's backhands are simply so powerful that no one can return it. Ma Long's BH are jaw-droppingly accurate, especially the angles on some of these were mind-blowing!

Very good tactic from ML, targeting WCQ's wide forehand and the middle leaving WCQ only options to play inside out forehand from the middle or forehand down the line to break the pattern which are very risky shots. WCQ was unable to find the answer to that, plus ML looked faster and fitter today like a glimpse of his prime. This is really much the only time I've seen a 35 yrs old 4-0 the current World No.1. What a legend!

I think that ML has to be selected above WCQ and FZD to play singles in the Olympics though. If he gets selected, I have no doubt he'll take gold. WCQ is not that weak. The key of this game is ML was very comfortable, he said he didn’t expect to win but 1 or 2 game, that’s why he called timeout in the first set. WCQ now takes responsibility in 3 events. That show the coaches believe him. He has just reach the top for a few months, he didn’t experienced enough. not only physical....ma long is mental...thinking this game and changing to suit the opponent....zhendong would lose to a blocker who cant loop better than him and wouldnt change the game where he would allow the blocker to do some attacking to counter ....ma is very different bringing variation to his game......the GOAT indeed

Few things that Ma Long do very differently in this match compared to his previous matches: 1) Using the reverse pendulum as his default serve. Its very to see Ma Long use a reverse pendulum serve. He usually only use it when he's losing and can't find a way to defeat his opponent. But in this match, almost 90% of his serves are reverse pendulum serves. 2) Targeting Wang Chuqin's wide forehand. For some reason WCQ's wide forehand is an apparent weakness for him this match. Many times in this match alone he had to lunge and dive just to save the ball played out wide to his forehand which he miserably failed most of the time.

That and I would say that playing closer to the table was key. He knows that going power for power against WCQ in this stage wouldn't work so he kept the game and the strokes close, genius game plan

I think #2 is basically what FZD used to do to Ma Long. His BH was very powerful and he exploited ML's forehand. We are seeing somethingn similar here, the only difference is that FZD's backhands are incredibly powerful, while ML was insanely accurate with his shots in this game.

Ma Long changed his serve to reverse pendulum against Wang Chuqin because he wanted to put pressure on him and make it more difficult for him to attack. Reverse pendulum is a tricky serve that can be difficult to anticipate and return.
