On 15 February 2023, crowds of hundreds of retired people took to the streets in Wuhan to protest against changes to the public insurance system. At the same time, people in Dalian joined the demonstration, in an echo of the protest in Wuhan.
According to some articles published on Chinese official social media accounts related to public health. The protest was fueled by people with malicious intentions, or supported by foreign NGOs and foreign forces since the protesters should benefit from the reform.
Is that true?
China's current public health insurance system failed to provide adequate, affordable, and equal care to all Chinese residents. The percentage of China's expenditure on health care to GDP ratio is not much different to Taiwan (Republic of China), but compared with Taiwan's national health insurance system, the system in mainland China is problematic.
