@Trumplican
@Trumplican 6 жыл бұрын
Im saying with more research and design it could have accomplished great feats. I'm not talking about efficiency either I'm talking power. Look at the power of the 13b in the rx-7. Now Imagine today's version of a 4 or 5 rotor rotary engine if given the attention the piston engine was given in the previous decades.
@homemadelemonade976
@homemadelemonade976 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah but the efficiency was bad, the rotating piece was tough to seal properly and the seals would burn out quickly and required frequent maitenance. Did i mentiom that it burned oil too? You had skyhigh emitions, poor reliability and it spent as much oil as it did fuel. It was never succesful for a reason.

I read up that it's being experimented on as an aircraft engine. Apparently the power to weight ratio was just too good to pass up.
@Trumplican
@Trumplican 6 жыл бұрын
technically it was successful. the RX Mazda's were very successful in racing especially.And if more research was put into the design such as the corner, side, and apex seal improvement they would have done even better.

@deusexaethera
@deusexaethera 6 жыл бұрын
If you look closely, it only produces a lot of vibration at idle, and that's because the carburetor doesn't allow adjusting the fuel mixture at idle. This engine was designed for model airplanes, and model airplane engines don't need to idle smoothly because they only idle before takeoff and after landing.

*The triangular shaped piston is relatively heavy compared to a reciprocating one, this creates a high osculating moment. Larger Wankel engines have balance weights, mass dampers and heavy flywheels to control vibration.*

Great video. However, I would say this is a "Wankel" engine, and not include "rotary" in the name. Rotary engines were typically used in WW1 aircraft where the cylinders rotated around the fixed crankshaft rather than what we consider normal nowadays. The Sopwith Camel in particular benefited (if you were a good enough pilot) by using the gyroscopic effect to give a very tight turn in one direction. Upon googling rotary engines I see that Wankel engines have been described as "rotary" by others and not just this utube. I think this is unfortunate because it blots out a lot of the history of IC engines and can be confusing. As an old guy, I have to admit to being mildly irritated by wet behind the ears kids coming along, showing they don't understand the valid history of what they are talking about by misusing terminology in this way. But good video anyway!

Wankel engine is lightweight and high torque, but less efficient engine. You can still use them for some applications. It is not commercial failure, it is failed by new stirgent emission standarts. VW is also failed at that test. Diesel engines will be at near future, also normal engines after that. Future will be hybrids and electric cars...

Kubi Kameho Rolls Royce experimented on a diesel 4-rotor several years back (2 rotors to power, 2 to basically supercharge the power), and that might strike your interest. The only real problem the rotary has is due to the burning oil, the seals wear due to constant metal fatigue that most Otto engines don't face so regularly. If there was such a lubricant that wouldn't really ignite but also wouldn't impede ignition, that metal fatigue would go down. Or perhaps a metal that has a higher tolerance for fatigue without absolutely destroying the chamber walls, may also work. Perhaps you could toy with the idea some, I can't think of anything right away.

@Trumplican
@Trumplican 6 жыл бұрын
Ok either your just saying things to get a rise out of me or you are truly confused. Come on no more mean comments do you need help understanding what a rotary engine is? The original wankel rotary the DKM both the rotor and the housing spun around on separate axes. It reached higher rpm and was naturally balanced but maintenance was complicated and had to be tore down just to change the spark plugs. Now the KKM that Hanns developed was simpler and had a fixed housing but it needed counter balancers to balance the engine and it wasn't capable of such high rpm as the DKM. However it was still a rotary engine. Felix was very angry to find that Hanns built the KKM behind his back and said "You've turned my thorough bred into a plow mare!" He was obviously referring to the much low rpm capabilities of the KKM however still higher that a piston engine was capable of. EDIT: my bad he stated "you have turned my race horse into a plow mare" By the way just a quick google search or wikipedia can help teach you about this stuff why dont you try that?

Isn't this Wankel's rotary engine, used once in a Suzuki or Kawasaki bike too, but prone to breakage and very difficult maintenance?
@doktorbimmer

*Yes, its a Wankel KKM (the non-rotary version) made by Graupner until they went bankrupt. Where is the ignition coming from? I see no electrical connection.

There is No ignition. The plug that he showed is the glow plug. A 1/5 v battery causes the plug coil to heat up. This ignites the fuel, and the heat from the ignition plus catalytic action on the platinum coil keeps the fuel igniting on the compression stroke.

It's a nitro engine. It runs on methanol and nitromethane, which can be ignited by a combination of compression and a glowing-hot wire.

*This is called GLOW IGNITION, the engine has no timed ignition spark and lacks sufficient static or dynamic compression to support auto-ignition as in the Diesel Cycle.*
