Wanna Get Away Plus vs Wanna Get Away on Southwest Airlines

As of the end of July 2022, Southwest Airlines flight credits no longer expire after 1 year. This means you do not need to worry about expiration dates of flight credits when deciding if you should transfer flight credits to another person after cancelling a Wanna Get Away Plus fare.

This year, I've been flying Southwest a couple times a month. My short answer is "It depends". I mostly travel alone so companion pass doesn't make sense for me but I have friends who recently got married and take trips together where companion pass makes a lot of sense. I'll add that to my list of video ideas. Thanks!

SO in your example, if I booked the 7 pm flight, at what time can I check to see if a seat is available and change in an earlier flight? Also do you forsee any issues in adding a companion that close to departure?

You be able to make a same day change starting at midnight on the day of departure based on the time zone of the departure airport. With a companion, you need to remove the companion, change the flight and then add them to the new flight. As long as there's room on the flight you change to, it should be fine but I haven't personally tried this before.

thanks for the video. One question - in your example on the day of departure if i want to book the 11:30 am flight is that possible ? Reason i ask is there is clearly availability for the flight but " Wanna get away plus" fare is sold out.

I haven’t seen any data points on this specific situation yet but I think you should be able to make this change. My understanding of the terms and conditions is that you just need seats available on the plane, not seats available in the Wanna Get Away Plus fare bucket. Exact wording from Southwest: “If there's an open seat on a different flight between the same cities on the same calendar day, you can get it-free of airline charges.”

Neither will let you board earlier by default. To board the plane earlier, you can pay extra for EarlyBird check-in or pay for the Anytime fare type which includes EarlyBird check-in. To board even earlier than that (A1-A15), you can purchase Business Select.
