Back in 1977 I switched from racing to freestyle at my home ski area, Lake Eldora and a few years later a Pro Mogul Tour. Sometimes I went to Vail and would try and keep up with the likes of Bruce Dinnman Scott Brooksbank and other pioneers of freestyle skiing Highline without stopping.

I probably saw you there, with Andre, Brian McClary et al. I frankly like the “old” carving style better, and don’t get using wide skis in the bumps. Just slows you down from edge to edge.

To me, the best skiers on the mountain are guys like this, who just rip down the mogul runs. Guys throwing flips in the terrain park is cool, but people who can shred bumps are the best skiers.

Skiing the bumps and making it look easy is much more impressive than someone doing flips in a terrain park, at least in my opinion.... to each his own... Cool Video, I'm 47 and I still do my best to ski them like I'm 18, never a perfect line, but skis are always tight and I'm making adjustments and recoveries all the way down!!

I am 63 now and still can easily ski the bumps. Not as good as those pros but quite decently. And there was never a problem with the knees as this is a very smooth movement - just like doing squads. Skis should never be off the snow (otherwise it's hotdog skiing). But it needs an instructor to get into it - otherwise it takes forever to learn it. Good luck and enjoy the best skiing and the coolest slopes.

Skiing in the 80’s moguls were big. Pre-terrain parks, pre- out of bounds… that’s how skiers were judged. I ski a handful of times per year. One nice moguls run, and my legs are shot!!! Jonny can't give you a reason, well, let me try. There is that moment, you wait for it, when your scratchy bouncing suddenly locks in and instead of a bounce, it becomes a glide. You smear inside the turn, wonder where the hit went and drift the edge of the mogul all the way around. Kicking your boot into line, you start to ...to.... carve? yes drift and carve and you speed up. suddenly a rush of adrenaline. You search down the line, your mind racing out ahead of your feet, a wild thought enters the mind: I can do this!

Heres the reason to ski moguls.... If you get really good, you can attain the sensation that the bumps are moving your skis and you float down the hill as a disembodied head. You can slow down and speed up at will... jump from bump to bump... under perfect control. Johnny m likes it rough though. He's pounding the snow flat.
