I lived in Havana when I was a kid --- 7 and 8 years old. That was in 1956-57. My (Canadian) dad worked for an American tire company. We lived in a penthouse on Paseo. I went to an American school a few blocks away. We spent the first few weeks in the Hotel Nacional. It was the arrival of Fidel that prompted the company to send us to another country: Belgium. Very different. I have fond memories of Cuba. I now live in Australia.

Love it so much)) thanks a lot for you wonderful video)) - you kicked me to my recollections, I walked along this non-touristic streets and places for several days in 2015, and got much of pleasure from these views, houses, people, mojitos and pina coladas)) it was fantastic travel! We visited many places - from Vinales valley to Havana, Gulf of pigs, Playa Giron, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Matanzas, Varadero and then back to Havana) and everywhere we met very friendly people, Cuba is incredible place, really. And I went into a piano bar where I requested a Buena Vista Social Club song # 8 entitled Buena VistaSocial Club which was on their album with Ry Cooder and the pianist played it perfectly on the piano with a huge smile on his face. Spent a few nights at an airb&b in Havana, right across from John Lennon Park. We were about 10 minutes from downtown old Havana. Walked many of these streets. The people were awesome, everyone was so friendly. Best way to see Cuba for sure. Also, our accommodations were excellent. The woman running it was named Celia, if I remember correctly. She did a great job of making us feel right at home.

In 1928 Cuba already had 61 radio stations, 43 of them in Havana, ranking fourth in the world, surpassed only by the US, Canada and the Soviet Union. In 1935 Cuba became the largest exporter to Latin America of scripts and radio recordings. 10- In 1925, with less than 200 plants, the nascent Cuban nation produced more than 5 million tons of sugar. At that time, most of the mills and farms were in the hands of foreigners, but already by the end of the 1950s, of the 161 mills working, 131 were owned by Cubans with 60% of the total production. 11- The Delicias mill became the largest in Cuba, with a milling capacity of 780,000 arrobas of cane per day. In 1952 it produced 1,383,653 bags of sugar. 12- In 1937 Cuba decreed for the first time in Ibero-America the Law of eight-hour workday, the minimum wage and university autonomy (the latter eliminated by Castro at the beginning of his tyranny). 13- In 1940 Cuba approved the most advanced of all the constitutions in the world of that time. It was the first in Latin America to recognize the right to vote for women, equal rights between the sexes and races, and the right of women to work. 14- The first country in the world that built a hotel with central air conditioning was Cuba. It was the Hotel Riviera, in 1951. And also the first building in the world built with reinforced concrete was made in Havana: the Focsa, in 1952. 15- In 1954 Cuba had one cow for every inhabitant, and ranked third in Latin America (after Argentina and Uruguay) in per capita meat consumption. 16- In 1955 Cuba was the second country in Latin America with the lowest infant mortality: 33.4 per thousand births. 17- In 1956 the UN recognized Cuba as the second country in Latin America with the lowest illiteracy rate (only 23.6%). Haiti had 90%, Spain, El Salvador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, 50%. 18- In 1957, the UN recognized Cuba as the best country in Latin America in number of doctors per capita (1 for every 957 inhabitants), with the highest percentage of electrified homes (82.9%) and homes with their own bathrooms (79.9%). and the second country (after Uruguay) in caloric consumption per capita daily. 19- In 1957 Havana became the second city in the world to have 3D cinema and multi-screens (Cine Radio Centro, today Yara) 20- In 1958, according to the Statistical Yearbook of Cuba, there were 7,567 public (free) and 869 private primary schools on the island, that is, 8,436 in total. Of the public schools, 1,206 were in the countryside. In the mid-50s, public education had 25,000 teachers, and private education 3,500. There were seven times as many public teachers as private ones. 21- In 1958 Cuba was the second country in the world to broadcast color television. 22- In 1958 Cuba is the Latin American country with the most automobiles (160,000, one for every 38 inhabitants) and the sixth in the world in the average number of automobiles per inhabitant. 23- Cuba was in 1958 the country that had the most electrical appliances. The country with the most kilometers of railway lines per square km, and in the total number of radio receivers. 24- Despite its small size and that it only had 6.5 million inhabitants in 1958, Cuba was ranked 29th among the largest economies in the world. What would have happened then if Cuba had followed the democratic course that Batista took and the Constitution of 1940 had been respected? Utter BS. There were profound inequalities in Cuban society -- between city and countryside and between whites and blacks. In the countryside, some Cubans lived in abysmal poverty. Sugar production was seasonal, and the macheteros -- sugarcane cutters who only worked four months out of the year -- were an army of unemployed, perpetually in debt and living on the margins of survival. Many poor peasants were seriously malnourished and hungry. Neither health care nor education reached those rural Cubans at the bottom of society. Illiteracy was widespread, and those lucky enough to attend school seldom made it past the first or second grades. Clusters of graveyards dotted the main highway along the foothills of the Sierra Maestra, marking the spots where people died waiting for transportation to the nearest hospitals and clinics in Santiago de Cuba. Racism also blighted Cuban society. The island's private clubs and beaches were segregated. In fact, Cuba was divided between extremely rich people, and ultra-poors conditions who could not afford even the little they have under the Castro government.

I was in Havana at the same time! We stayed in Miramar, and I loved it. People from the US can go directly from the US, we just have a list of reasons to go, and your option must be from the list. Plus, take cash as US debit/credit cards are not accepted anywhere on the island. Havana centro/viejo is crowded with many dilapidated buildings, but it’s still safe, unique, and beautiful in its own right. I loved it. I want to go back.

I went to Cuba in 1999 to meet my husband's family. My husband could not go. He died before he ever met his grandchildren. When I was there I was shocked at the living conditions. I was also pleasantly surprised how happy they were. Well my husband family was anyway. Maybe it was just an act to make me feel comfortable while I was there. I love Cuba

Un pays qui vit sous embargo par la seule volonté des USA qui voulaient en faire un petit Puerto Rico. Lorsque Cuba était encore sous contrôle américain, il n'y avait que la mafia et des casinos. Personne d'autre que les USA ne veut maintenir cet embargo. Les USA cassent les couilles de l'humanité: l'Iran, l'Irak, le venezuela, le Vietnam, la Corée, l'Afghanistan, le Liberia, la Palestine, le chili, l'Argentine, les Philippines, le japon, la Syrie. .. la liste est longue de ces pays coupés en deux lorsqu'ils ne sont pas bombardés ou tronqués de leur gouvernement. Cuba est pauvre mais sa culture vivante nargue encore les États-Unis.

ALESSANDRO -- The very same images you can find in ANY city of the "first world", if you care to look. Perhaps not as many scenes, but certainly as poor and distressing. Vancouver is a beautiful, active. wealthy city, and yet you find people living in tents on top of concrete sidewalks right downtown streets. the problem i saw when i visited in 2019 was that cuba lacks any modern infrastructure and retofitting it would be near impossible without tearing down a large portion of what is there. There simply is no way to electrify or plumb the place otherwise. Everything there is 70 yrs old or if its newer the soviets built it and its in shambles. The people are lovely and Cuba has tremendous potential if they could put in modern electricity and power....Cuba should be the most wealthy country in the hemisphere. Cubans should be the richest latin amerians easily.

Left my life in the US for this walkabout in Havana, 10 full days, almost a decade ago today. It was a fantastic time walking this labyrinth of decaying concrete buildings, a time of "standing still" in a city that never sleeps. Not a single soul, in a city of several million, was ever threatening in any way, but, please, beware the hustle. It never ends, so go there knowing you will need Spanish and the phrase in it, "no thank you." If you are smart, you will say it plenty of times. Enjoy!

This the socialist system the oligarchs of the usa, and globally have tried forcing our country into. Where the infrastructure is decapitated for most citizens, but not for the 0.1% of course. К нам в училище, в Полтаве, студенты кубинцы приходили с лётного ,на дискотеку. Ребята были воспитанные,в юности, часто пели кубинскую песню Квантананеро. Посмотрев ролик, вспомнила, студенческие годы, было здорово.

Our conversation on the way there touched us both. I'll never forget the people in Cuba, truly the kindest, most giving souls I've met.
