It's obvious that you love your dogs. Mark Twain once said, "I don't know where dogs go when they die, but, even if they don't go to heaven, I want to go where they go." I'm with him.

Just got my Accu Rite Weather Station (2 solar panel, like yours) and bought a pole to mount it 10.5’ above the ground in an open area. Was going to put it on my house gable, but not sure that would leave the temperature reading stay accurate. Calibrated the rain gauge, minimal hassle. My biggest issue is simply getting high enough to see the ‘bubble’ on TOP of the unit to level it! Looking forward to the use of this instrument!

My wife purchased this same setup for me as a Christmas gift. I too am a bit of a Wx geek and it she picked up on it despite my thinking I wasn't obvious. I also have been a fan of the weather Underground for a while. I like that WU makes things local. Living (not far from you) in the same mountains, I find that the weather reports coming from the major population areas are rarely accurate. Currently, mine is still in it's "learning mode but it has worked flawlessly right out of the box. I have only had it up and running for 8 days, so I can't offer a more definitive review, but, so far so good. I did go through the process of getting mine online and connected to Weather Underground but have stopped transmitting until the "learning" period is over so that I'm not sending out questionable data. I'll go live with it next week I suspect. I agree with the issue of the snow build up blocking the wind thing and is why I will not likely raise mine much higher in the air than it currently is. Right now I have it attached to my deck railing which puts it at roughly 18' off the ground (vs the 30' recommended). This way I can still reach it to clear the snow off. And YES, the brightness of the screen is nothing short of obnoxious. For now, it's a 9.5 out of 10 score. Our Station- MATHER FARM, KNYONEON17
@gardenfork

yes, it always colder in my yard than what the TV weather says. i think the learning mode is about weather forecasts on the display unit, out of the box it sends reliable raw data to weather underground, from what i have read. i'd buy a second display for the bedroom if it wasn't so bright. thx!

Hey Eric, my husband, Richard loves his gadgets! So he researched and decided on what I believe is the same weather station you got. We have had this station for about a year now and get a big kick out of it. Not sure if the high winds over 25 MPH can be documented with ours. And we haven't had any measurable snow yet here in Kentucky, but will be watching for any snow to build up. :))) We did have however a problem with spider nests that built their cocoon in the rain gauge. And this really messes with the calibrations until they are cleaned out. So FYI, I know you live in more of a wooded area than we do... lol Always enjoy yall's videos & the Labs.

Those AcuRite's are good, I've used them for years. The 5-in-1 sensor has been out for more than a decade, which means parts are available everywhere, and very cheap as well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I like the older and more durable designs better than modern weather stations that look cheap and flimsy.

A word of warning: These Acu-rite stations are cheap for a reason: they are not that accurate. I've seen them as much as 4-5 degrees off with several. If that's not a big deal to you, no worries, but if you want something more accurate, look at an Ambient Weather WS-1200 or a Davis Vantage Vue.

Good video, thank's for that. I just got one. Hopefully can get the rain gauge calibrated without too much problem. Think I'll try spraying it down with silicone to help the fake snow we have been getting lately here in western NY, from accumulating too much on the chassis. The learning phase is supposed to be for the barometer to self-calibrate. But in the end i suppose, you get what you pay for. Subbed.

If you spray silicone on the unit, be sure to cover the sensors before spraying, or dismantle it to spray the outer covers. Silicone spray can give inaccurate readings or damage the sensors. Another way to achieve what you are trying to do , is to use a wipe with silicone to apply it by hand. After three years of continuous use in the Pacific Northwest, my unit has not had a problem with snow clogs or such.

I bought this unit and it worked fine for two years...then the outside temp quit working (shows -40 all the time) so I took it apart and saw how poorly it was set to be in the weather..circuit board that has no protections and corrosion everywhere. I got on line and found lots of folks who also had the temp quit, wind speed, etc. All due to electronics that are not very well protected. I also ordered and installed a guys fix for the temp read out for $10, but that didn't work either...so I just tossed it in the trash today. From what I gather many of these units are not made well and perhaps this is just what you have to put up with with a weather station. Not wanting to spend $500 on one either. I will miss the logging of the temps with long term highs and lows and how much rain has fallen since reset, but just can't see spending a car payment on the hobby weather info. Good luck with yours.

I wanna know about the data transmission between the sensors (mounted outdoors) and this little display console (indoors)? @donaldsaxton7911

You will need AC power for the monitor, but not for the outdoor sensor unit. The monitor does have three AA batteries for connection to the Outdoor sensor, but may not show a display on the monitor screen . That doesn't mean it is not recording data however. The monitor can be hooked into a computer for download of the data via a USB cable.

I have found the batteries in the outdoor sensor last about a year if using Alkalines. They may last a bit longer if using the Lithium batteries, but not sure. Lithiums are recommended if living in an area with extreme temperature changes. If battery life is a problem due to location of the outdoor sensor, buy the Remote Battery accessory which replaces the batteries in the sensor unit with a block that snaps in place where the batteries go. It has 30' of cable and a remote battery box allowing the battery box to be located at ground level either indoors or outside. I have this option on my Weather Station , and it works great!!

Hi Eric, I'm a weather geek myself and have been looking at weather stations for a while but it is a bit overwhelming with choices and price, so I was really excited to see your review and have ordered one (can't wait). It seems most recommend 30ish ft is best for placement and obviously in an as open place as possible. I was thinking of mounting mine on my shed roof which is about 15 ft but is in a very open spot. I live in Maine so my concern is the snow issue you pointed out and will I have to climb up on the roof every time it snows. . Are you keeping yours at a reachable height primarily for this or do you plan on mounting it higher? My station will be about 75 ft and 3 walls from where the smart hub will be. Hopefully the signal will reach. Appreciate any recommendations.

Hi Dan, mbe you could make a long broom thing to clean off the snow, i'm not big on ladders. i have a lot of trees, so keeping the weather station at a low height is fine with me, i won't get a very accurate wind direction anyway. you migh consider running an ethernet cable from the router and move the smart hub closer to where the station will be. thx!

I own one and live in a rural area so accurate weather reports for my area are sparse. Mine has given me several early warnings of severe weather hitting my area. A year ago a tornado hit our nearest airport. Even though they have a National Weather Service reporting station, it didn't report the weather conditions until after the tornado had hit. The notification didn't come out on local media (Cell phone alerts ,etc) until the storm cell had left the immediate area. I could see the barometric change as it happened before it hit the airport. It doesn't sound like much, but as a City Official for my town, I have to know what potential dangers might affect my fellow citizens.

Why not build your own then when anything breaks you can repair it yourself? The electronic sensors that you need to build a weather station are really cheap & easy to connect to an arduino or rasberry pie board that also has wi-fi. Start off with just one sensor and then keep adding to your weather station until you have everything you want or need.
