Agreed ... that's probably the position that most of us should take when it comes to owning most kinds of pets! Plenty of dogs and cats need homes ... other than that let's leave the responsibility to care for exotic animals to the few people that are well equipped to do so.

@@belencorso6976 I have a lot of respect for people who admit they don’t have what it takes to care for a pet yet. I currently would love a dog, but I don’t have the time and money I need to properly care for one, so I’m waiting until I’m ready. As much as I’d love to have an animal companion, I’d prefer to be able to care for them the way they deserve.

I greatly appreciate your honesty and wholeheartedly agree that Toucans don't belong in human care because it's hard to impossible to do right and all the other reasons you mentioned. Yes, aviaries are simply not enough; you need an island for them! Moreover, I think this is true of most exotic pets. I'm a formal animal researcher and taught at an animal hospital for many years, so I speak from experience. I hope a lot of people watch this video, really hear your words and take heed. Thank you so much for making this video and sharing this most important truth!

Susan Jones I agree, cats and dogs are domestic pets not exotic birds and animals, I find it upsetting that in America theses creatures are often used as some sort of status, showing off to others trying to outdo each other, totally unacceptable and it should be made illegal, animals are as entitled to be free as humans.
@cairrean2412
@cairrean2412 5 жыл бұрын
Several breeds of birds are already pretty well on the way to being domesticated. After several generations of captive breeding, they don't have the instincts to survive in the wild anymore. Would you consider it kinder to have a bird in a safe, loving home where they are fed, cleaned, trained, and otherwise cared for, or would it be better to release a bird into the wild where it is not a native species and without the instincts it needs to survive?
@BulldogLawyer
@BulldogLawyer 5 жыл бұрын
Susan Jones honestly I feel that only a few specific animals belong In human care. Dogs and cats were domesticated. Hedgehogs do fairly well in human care if you have no other pets. Some birds like Greys do well in captivity. Other pets like bats do not and should not be pets.

I used to have Amazons, Macaws, Cockatoos and conures - and had a friend who had 2 toucans. He had a massive enclosure for them but they are not pets, never should be. They are a mess, require constant attention and really should just be in the jungle. My last parrot died 2 years ago after 35 years in my care. Great companion, went with me everywhere and sat on my shoulder all day. I will never get another bird and if you ever have the urge there are hundreds who need to be rescued/adopted but the more we discourage having exotic pets, the better.

Human babies are also cute and cuddly, but I wouldn't recommend anyone keep them as pets either. They've been known to poop a lot and throw up. They have incredibly fast metabolisms and require a constant supply of mashed carrots and peas. Eventually they grow up and become thankless teenagers.

Really pleased to see someone being completely honest about their pet species, a lot of people will give the warnings, but not many will be honest enough to say we shouldn't keep them, I guess it's about being honest with yourself, ie. if you're willing to accept the truth, you have to be willing to act on it!

Melissa Smith Toucans are extremely hard to take care of and what she said was right and she’s not snobby lol. Toucans are hard I know because my Uncle actually had a Toucan once and what she said in this video was right. Toucans shouldn’t be in human cares, Toucans shouldn’t be kept as pets. Most people get a Toucan because they think its cute and it’s like taking care of a parrot but they’re really not!

And Barney came to me at only 1 hour old. He was still wet. His mom died on the operating table. He was the only survivor of his litter. They bring me so much joy and companionship, I could never repay them. It's very easy to love a creature that is always asking for a cuddle. Bless you and your birdies...I'm thinking of getting another cockatiel. My first one lived 15 years and was a joy and soooo smart and talkative!
