I've had one of these since the first auction back in 2000....lots of interest then too. Prices were about the same but I'd say there seems to be a lot more folks interested now in these trucks. If you bought it to keep..don't worry about what "they sell for". Just be thankful you have one.

I've worked on every inch of these and rebuilt every part. We started replacing a lot of the 6.2 with 6.5 . Some newer models have overdrive. They are a fuel pig but put them in 4lock they will go anywhere. I'd swap out the 6.2 for a gas motor. The 6.2 is a turd. The glow plug system is a common issue. You have the control box under the dash, a temp sensor in the coolant crossover connected to the thermostat and the glow plugs. Common to see glow plugs go from not paying attention to the wait light. When the glow plug go they can swell and possibly break off when replacing going in the head so you take the injectors out and use angle plyers to snap the swelled up injector head off so it doesn't go in the head. They are really loud inside and the doors don't seal. The older generators and mounts aren't very good so hope you get one that's been upgraded with an up to date Manual Work Order.
@alitak8 жыл бұрын
Great info thank you! I heard that on the glow plugs too! An old marine told me they use to break off and they'd let them rattle off in there. Lol! I'm sure it didn't help the engine!
@brew54918 жыл бұрын
+alitak The engines would have to be rebuilt or replaced if you ran them like that. Sorry to hear they did that to their equipment
@tonyincs7 жыл бұрын
Bill we would crank the engine to blow out the glow plug heads that would break off..Shot them out post haste. And your right, everyone would jump in and just crank them up-"yes I waited for the light"...pshh. But there was a bad run of glow plugs in the 92-94 time frame if I remember correct..good for about one field problem if you were lucky.
@enumrob7717 жыл бұрын
The 6.2/6.5 was never a good candidate for this application. Those engines came out in response to the early 80's fuel crisis and they were made to achieve good fuel economy over horsepower and torque. These engines got 20 mpg or better when installed in a 1/2 ton 2wd pickup or even a suburban. Gm even said the 6.2 /6.5 was for good fuel economy. It was never designed for over 10,000 lbs GVW. The up armored H1's weigh over 11,000 lbs and these engines really struggle.
@33478617 жыл бұрын
They'll go anywhere.... until you've got four troops and their gear in the vehicle and need to hop an 8" curb to maneuver to a better position while under fire...... Then you just reach down, rip the Tcase lever to low, grind gears, floor it and pray like hell.... Not that I know anything about that.....

@chaindrivesumner94707 жыл бұрын
MRAPs will actually give you internal bleeding. Crew survivability are these things main goal. There are also several different types, i've had the had the privlidge to VC the 6x and 4x cougars, MATVs and MaxPro. The early versions of the Cougars the suspension was leafsprings and nearly every time you hit a bump you'd hit the ceiling and after you recover from the concussion you had to make sure that the retaining bolts to the suspension didn't shear off. The newer ones are on airbags like most modern riggs, still bumpy but better(except for the 4x which will still throw you to the heavens). Personally I liked the MaxPro the best but that could have been just because it was the one i spent the least amount of time with. The MATV was a probably the best ride suspension wise.

@derpinbird11808 жыл бұрын
Jon Homrich Its not the engine thats the problem, the problem is in the photo here, see that shifter? two gears and thats it. They go slow, with high rpms. It would make an awesome offroader, thats what its supposed to do. But the gearbox means shit mpg and you having to hover near the redline trying to go anywhere on the road.
@alitak8 жыл бұрын
+Derpin Bird nailed it! 3 gears, 3rd is like 3rd on a 5 speed, too low! :-(
@jhomrich898 жыл бұрын
Derpin Bird yes I understand this, the H1 civilian version with a duramax is geared like a heavy duty pickup so it can go highway speeds that's what I'm talking about. I worked on these Humvee's in the army they averaged about 7 miles to the gallon which is horrible. That is the range selector, they come standard with a GM 3 speed transmission with no overdrive and no park you have to use the park only neutral brake, their option is a 4 speed 4180 GM. Another thing these engines aren't turbocharged they only make 150hp and you can imagine 150hp and honestly not that much torque at least not for a diesel combined with the gearing certainly doesn't help it anymore. The only ones that are turbocharged are the armored ones. The military Humvee's are completely different than the civilian versions in several ways in the fact you have creature comforts and more respectable mpg at least for what it is, but honestly if fuel economy, noise levels, comfort and everyday practicality are what your looking for than get an F150 Platinum this isn't the vehicle for you.

Oregon changed the law, easy to title now with special purpose permanent plates. I sold the Humvee a few months back, it was a blast but I didn’t drive it enough. Pain in the butt checking all 4 wheels for oil plus all the other countless place you can get leaks in these things. I’d get another one if they were under 3500 but beyond that they are maintenance nightmares. You spend a good two hours doing pre-checks after it’s sat for a long time.

I understand the draw.... sort of. At the same time, (and yes, I'm a combat Vet), they're not for me. Used them for years and eventually developed a strong distaste for the platform. They do lots of things in a lackluster manner. Jack of all trades and master of none. Underpowered, somewhat fragile in hard use, and a pain to work on. Doesn't help that I'm 6'4" and with a weapon and body armor find them to be super cramped. My surplus vehicle of choice is an M35 6x6. Usually cheaper, easier to maintain, damned near bulletproof, and exceptional performance. Glad you're happy with your purchase but just not my flavor.

You remove the four bolts, swing that part here out of the way and use a SPANNER WRENCH to fasten the nut inside It's a bad design Also I would remove all the half shaft bolts and RED Loc-Tite them ALL! Wehen they work loose they will strike the brake calipers and snap off the heads of each bolt coming loose. I saw that numerous times as well. They are fun to drive!

+Ratt Rodd interesting! Do you have a citation to the story? I have not seen that anywhere and it would sure help me get this one plated! :-D
"Each Humvee, including ones that have already been sold and delivered, will receive a GSA form SF97-1, which effectively allows the buyer to request a title for the vehicle. After collecting that title, getting the machine on the streets will still not be easy, especially if you live in a state like California with strict emission regulations. While in service, original military Humvees were exempt from smog laws, and because these trucks don’t technically have model years, according to Fox News, the various states may struggle to ascribe the correct smog designation or offer the modifications needed to pass the emissions testing."
@alitak8 жыл бұрын

@alitak7 жыл бұрын
60/65 is as fast as you would ever want to go in these safely. Yeah, I know they "can" go quicker, but you are redline in these 998's and they are not built for that. These are built and designed for 45 MPH convoys and slow moving offroad, not high speed driving. The brakes are weird on these too because they are on the axles so you get a little play in them at stops. Just a weird vehicle to drive on the road in general, fun though.

@alitak9 жыл бұрын
+nick angwin The fees are stated clearly in the auction, I think it was 10%. They have other stupid fees too, bill of sale fee, title fee, it all adds up. It was just over $8000 after I paid all the fees. It's better to buy one from someone else if you can find a deal, it took over 3 months from the time I won the bid and paid for it until I could get the release to pick it up. By then it had been rained in for weeks and it had a nice collection of wasps living in the cab. There is a lot of break ins at the storage depot in Portland Oregon where they have these stored at. Look it over carefully. I'm sure there is other people who won an auction, go to pick up these and grab parts off the other vehicles.

That is about right, 190 on a diesel is not bad. These are pressure combustion, you don't want them running cool if you want them running well. These are also indirect inject, ie, old technology. These are not the nice TDI engines with CRD pressures unfortunately.
