“We have within us deeply rooted weaknesses, passions, and defects. This can not all be cut out with one sharp motion, but patience, persistence, care and attention. The path leading to perfection is long. Pray to God so that he will strengthen you. Patiently accept your falls and, having stood up, immediately run to God, not remaining in that place where you have fallen. Do not despair if you keep falling into your old sins. Many of them are strong because they have received the force of habit. Only with the passage of time and with fervor will they be conquered. Don’t let anything deprive you of hope.” - St. Nectarios of Aegina

This priest doesn't pussyfoot around--he's right--he is spot on in his admonitions and his advice: the lower life must be utterly crucified if we are to be freed from the vice of lust which is a sure road to death. The question is will we do it--not can we do it. Christ wouldn't have advised it if we couldn't do it.

I'm writing this as much for myself as for anyone else who needs to hear it, so its mainly my understanding of these things. The guilt of wilful sin weighs so heavily on us that sometimes we wonder if we could even dare to look God in the face and ask Him for forgiveness, but imagine how much more hurtful it must be for God to see us sin and then watch us believe we are not worth forgiveness. Guilt is crushing and may feel like a burden, but its really the weight of the Holy Spirit holding us down and making us remember God, making us feel how we should for choosing our own way, especially when we know we shouldn't. I'm grateful for my guilt in as far as I cause myself to feel it by sinning, because I know God is still with me; calling me back and upwards to the place where He has always wanted to see me. And at that stage it might be tempting to wallow in guilt as though that's what the guilt is for, but its an alarm in your soul telling you that you've done something you need to be forgiven for. As far as I can tell, asking for forgiveness, especially when you feel you don't deserve it is one of the best things you can do in these sort of situations. We never deserved Gods Grace, and still got it, and so how much more pain do we feel when we push away that gift in favour of some sin or another. But feeling the weight of your sin is perhaps the first and most important stage of your repentance, because as long as you feel you have some need to improve and resist sin, you're still aiming at the goal of perfection. You will never achieve perfection on your own, and you'll not achieve it on Earth, only Jesus was perfect on Earth, but continuing upwards is as important as anything, and the way there is first realising how far you need to climb. I heard that one of the Saint's said that praying every prayer as though it could be your last was central to putting your whole mind and soul behind what you pray, and I think that's true. Even if you feel like you're only paying lipservice to God because you sin so readily, don't let the Devil use the guilt of your sin to stop you from trying to return to God truly. Think of how many times even a stumbling and stuttering apology would have made you feel better than when people just leave a situation unresolved. I'm sure that asking for forgiveness without feeling the need for forgiveness will achieve nothing, but as long as you feel guilt, God is still pushing you to recognize that you're worth his forgiveness, and that you need forgiveness; so if you're here with me and feel like you're wicked and a sinner, you're probably right, and that's the good news; the Spirit of God won't let you return to the animalistic and sinful person you were before, because at the very least His wisdom is in you now, and He does Love you, enough to stay with you through your sinful days. Please, when you Pray think of the people here and realise how many more people are where you are now, were all sinners and we all need help. God bless you all

As an Orthodox girl, how can I have intimacy and not be lustful? I am a survivor of sexual assault, which was my first experience of intimacy. I’m trying to heal and I want to have safe, fulfilling intimacy someday. I want someone to hold me, who sees that I have value as a person aside from being sexually attractive, and who will stop and not touch me when I ask. I hate that there was someone who thought that they could use me for their own twisted pleasure. I was not made or meant to be used like this!

Finding the right spouse requires prayer and adherence to God’s will, as well as a little bit of work on our end identifying Christ-like behavior in others and taking “red flags” seriously. People who respect boundaries will be courteous, selfless, and you will notice that they have a close relationship with the Church. Patience is key - it’s better to be with nobody than to be with somebody abusive or not for you. Trust in God, ask Him in prayer, and He will give you what you need. I’m sorry you went through that, be sure to take the time you need to heal before going into a commuted relationship. From a fellow orthodox Christian, wishing you the best.

@themonsterunderyourbed94084 ай бұрын
Collector of what? Actually, it doesn't really matter. What exactly does collecting change in your life? Do you gain anything from collecting? When you think about it, it's all just meaningless hunks of plastic/glass/metal/paper. It's a distraction from what's actually important: relationships with God and people. I'd say it's greed, not lust. I see lust the same as an obsession (not necessarily sexual). You can lust for power, money, sex, "collections". Lusting is when you completely and willingly focus your thoughts and energy on attaining a selfish goal. Like when a drug addict can't think of anything else except how to get their next hit.

I don't remember where I heard it from, but I once heard that "The way we sin informs us of what is missing in our lives." For example, someone who is prideful is missing the kind of safe environments where they can allow themselves to be humble without being attacked; someone who is envious is lacking in some sort of internal character, leaving them incomplete. As people who suffer the sin of lust, we must therefore strive to find more meaningful love in genuine relationships with the people around us - this, I think, will go a long way to helping us overcome this sin.
@nickkerinklio82394 ай бұрын
Of course if we were in an environment where our passions could never be inflamed, we would never struggle with these sins, but without these temptations we cannot be saved. A rich man who gives away his money and possessions is greater than a poor man who never had any. I disagree that we should have these relationships first as a way of defeating lust. I think we need to gain control over it BEFORE we can have meaningful relationships. May God have mercy on the whole world if Orthodox Christians start getting married before overcoming lust.
@Kuroyami0Fukaikuro4 ай бұрын
@@nickkerinklio8239 So are people supposed to just live in total isolation if they can't defeat their lust? I never suggested jumping into a romantic relationship while still suffering from lust - that wouldn't help anyone. I said people need to find meaningful love and genuine relationships with other people, and there's more to love than just Eros. Developing a better relationship with your family and forging meaningful, lifelong friendships are all forms of love, and the point I'm making is that developing these close relationships is a good way to help one's self escape the trap of lust.
