For all of those dreaming of producing your own watch, well we have a very interesting solution to share with you today. You have probably heard about how private label works and how it requires quite a lot of risk taking by the person behind the project; funding development, prototypes, minimum initial production volumes, distribution and commercialisation… Well this can now all be taken care of by Watchangels, a Swiss company offering what they call crowd manufacturing solutions.
This integrated concept cuts many corners for both the creator and the end customer resulting in creating higher value for your buck and very importantly letting the creator concentrate on the creation process and actual sales.
To exemplify this, we will also talk of a perfect case study with the reintroduction of a famous name in watchmaking with the revival of the Waltham brand.

I lived in Waltham, MA for many years, such a great city with a rich horological history. Great to see the city's name on new watches.

I went to a small school in Waltham and we got to visit a small museum with some of their old watches and tools. I love seeing such a local name on the dial.

I would really like to see this model succeed. At only two projects in their pipeline, they have to be burning cash? I hope they can scale as this is a brilliant idea. It creates well designed diversity in the industry. Diversity always translates well to the more established brands generating total success for all watch lovers.

Yes, can sound like a big risk taken from them, but the idea is a really good one!

Great to see a Waltham-branded watch but I would not put 'Swiss Made' on it. I appreciate what they wanted can only be done in Switzerland, but it seems misguided considering the brand's history.

I'd definitely prefer that they were made in Waltham, but Waltham watches were made in Switzerland for a long time.

Great to see innovation creeping into the industry. And a good way for Swiss manufacturing to bring a model that "competes" with the Chinese in some way -- combining quality AND value. Out of the box thinking will be more and more critical, I would think. Pedigree won't be enough, unless the industry wants to contract to a few storied brands and a few hyper costly niche brands. This reminds me of the video you did last year(?) on the phigital AD approach. Something fresh.

So, a kind of crowdfunding? Coming to the end of my own watch building project the thought of going further had crossed my mind. To that end I'm starting the process of creating another - as I've found the whole process really enjoyable - so, who knows, maybe I will give it more thought. Although perhaps this Watch Angels is for an already established brand? Anyway, enjoyed the video.

*What isn't clear from this Watches TV video is whether or not "The Creator" of the "Crowd Manufacturing Model" receives any compensation, and if so, what is (The Creator's) percentage on each piece sold at market please ?*
@WATCHESTVcom
@WATCHESTVcom 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the creator gets a percentage on overall turnover generated (not a cut on profit), his cut it therefore guaranteed. Percentage will vary depending on the level of involvement of Watchangels. Best to you

Curious. What I understand from this is that individuals put in money that enables prototyping, and are then asked to put in more money to buy the watches to help enable manufacturing for market. Ongoing profits seem to go to the company watch angels. It looks like there is no return on investment (ROI) for crowdfunders, beside whatever enjoyment they might get from being part of the process. Is this correct?
@WATCHESTVcom
@WATCHESTVcom 3 жыл бұрын
No, that’s the big difference with this approach as the risk is fully taken by watchangels and the return for the creator is not based on profits made but by a cut on the overall turnover. I hope i cleared things up with this. Best to you

Interesting, different approach towards the watch industry. To make it work, you need a lot of spirit, enthusiasm and a positive and convincing attitude. Unfortunately Mr Benedini does not transport any of these in the video. Sorry Mr Benedini, really not meaning to bash you, but you should go for some PR-lessons or send out someone else!

Basically we will plunder your design and give you a percentage but a small percentage because remember you didn’t have to manufacture it or market it😑 they are trying to treat watch designers and watch majors like artist in the music industry with a 360 deal🤣
