I read a Penguin Classics edition and their translation tried to make their dialogue too modern. Phrases like 'guys!' and 'weird!' made it odd to read but the general gist of the story wasn't hard to grasp.

@@ashikana21 Thank you. I read the novel many, many years ago (1973 I believe) and the Penguin edition was translated by Rosemary Edmonds and it was wonderful. There is a beautiful cloth-bound Penguin with Briggs translation that I was thinking of buying to reread and give to my daughter. I may pass and go back to what I originally read.

Sonya was a bit annoying in this story. I mean, what does she do all day? Every scene she’s basically sitting around moping and anytime her suitor is mentioned she tears up and walks out of the room 🙄
