I love this adaptation! Wish it had two more episodes to let some of the philosophy and character moments breathe a bit more, but I loved it overall! The cast is so good!

Well at this time in Russia they would have spent a great deal of time speaking French. In the Book (or my translation), Anatole called "Anatole" the French version the Russian name Anatoli and he called Natasha "Nathalie" as a Nickname, her name in French. Also the book (despite being an English translation of a Russian novel, just jumps to French because Tolsey jumps to French and assumed his audience would understand it.

@@maggiemakgill French was the Lingua Franca of European nobility, that doesn't mean nobility from all European countries had absolutely the same culture. Russian aristocrats were not French or British. By the way, Tolstoy didn't assume his audience will understand his French passages as he gave the translation in footnotes. He used French to highlight the conflict between the traditional gallomania and a newly discovered patriotism. But since this series is British, there's nothing wrong with some "Britishness" in it.
