Now, you could say nothing in the future is inevitable, but there are people who would argue that point with you, too. -stan

Hey Crash Course team. Love your work. Would like to point out here that the term "internal imperialism" at 1:02, is in itself a Manifest Destiny way of describing American expansion. America began as a 13 state union clustered on the Eastern seaboard and has since expanded to control more than twice the land that the Roman Empire controlled at its height. There was nothing internal about it. Also, unlike the Roman Empire, that expanded but left cultures alone as long as they paid taxes, the U.S. "union" wiped away peoples and cultures in front of it in the largest campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide known to human history as your video attests to when it speaks of the drop in California's Native population from 150,000 to 30,000 in 12 years (9:49). I appreciate all of the work that Crash Course does to bring knowledge to so many, and I hope that Crash Course U.S. History can make young Americans aware of this history so that we can choose how our country will wrestle with its implications and open wounds.

The Mexican-American war was one of the wars I've had to study for myself because the history of that war wasn't even touched when I was in high school. Just WWI, WWII, the war in Korea, and the war in Vietnam (with a "side order" of the ridiculous "We Were Soldiers" American film).
@TheZombifiedFairy9 жыл бұрын
***** funny because now WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnamese war are only touched on in today's school. I went to private school, so I learned about all of them, with an emphasis on WWII and Korean (mainly because at that school we choose what we liked to learn) and I started in the 1st grade. Now my daughter(8), the product of public school, was so lost when I taught her about Anne Frank and took her to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. I was so embarrassed I taught her about all of wars and current events a few months before we went to the Anne Frank house.

The effect of your late message has been thus far to prejudice the public mind against my people, to enable those who wait the opportunity to hunt them down, and rob them of the rewards of their toil... You argue that this is a republic of a particular race - that the Constitution of the United States admits of no asylum to any other than the pale face. This proposition is false to the extreme, and you know it. The declaration of your independence, and all the acts of your government, your people, and your history are all against you."

While I generally very much enjoy his videos, in this video, Mr. Green actually is wrong. At 11:35 , he claimed that the Compromise of 1850 passed despite all of the controversy in the legislature. Actually, that is not entirely accurate, at all. The Compromise of 1850 actually did not pass in the legislature, in fact, it was actually voted down. The only way for the contents of the Compromise to pass is if they were broken up as smaller acts. Stephen A Douglass from Illinois took the initiative to break up all of the different components of the Compromise of 1850 and present them to Congress. Every component passed except for one. While practically all of the aspects of the Compromise of 1850 were passed, they weren't passed under that title. The accuracy is in the details.

"Durrr, the New Deal made the Great Depression worse. Only WW2 fixed it." Lol, both of those involved heavy government spending. "Free market" principles don't reverse free market trends because those involve human nature. Government spending has the ability to go against that, and increase aggregate demand when the private sector is fearful.

6:48 As an Englishman, I really don't appreciate people using the term 'Anglo-Saxon' to mean 'white'. It is a term for English people not Europeans as a whole

agreed Anglo celtic here
@chrisl.62117 жыл бұрын
TheLadmeister While I agree with you on that aspect, Anglo saxons make up most of the USA, and virtually every white American has more than one English Anglo Saxon line of ancestry. Also, Anglo just means a white English speaker from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and the two terms of Anglo Saxon and Anglo are often confused, like in this video.

The concept of white was just a con to get Europeans from different countries and social classes who hated each other to get along.

On that time, Americans (With anglosaxon culture) actually discriminated also people from Germany, Ireland and other places in Europe. This is one of the reasons why sopme poles, germans, and irish men in the USA deserted and fought for Mexico.

What they are trying to say is: why should I feel personally ashamed of something that happened when I was not alive and had no control over? And he is right no country has a history devoid of hurting other groups or nations.

we read "on civil disobedience" in my English class today and then all turned in our essays we were supposed to write after with nothing on them but the words "Civil Disobedience." Our teacher thought it was great and gave us all a bonus point, but we had to write the essays anyways. Worth a shot though!

You know, I would like to see John Green and the Crash Course staff in the White House next election. There is a team I'd vote for. In fact I'd become a political fanatic if that did happen.

You mentioned that "the Mexicans were still seen as inferior to Anglo-Saxons", does this mean that the majority of settlers at this time were strictly English rather than Irish or Scottish?
@BifronsCandle9 жыл бұрын
+Malcolm McQueen Irish were looked down upon as well. Scottish were "honorary" Anglo-Saxons (especially Southern Scots).

+Malcolm McQueen Some Irish soldiers (Saint Patrick's Battalion) fought for the Mexicans in this war. Anglo-Saxons saw them as inferior white men, while Mexican saw them as Catholic brothers.
@paparazzz85419 жыл бұрын
+Malcolm McQueen yes they were because there was a small battalion of Irish immigrants helping the Mexicans fight because in the US they were treated unfairly infact there is a monument about the battalion in Mexico City

Please show Henry Clay some love, he was a great man for his time. He was flawed but practical. He was also honest to a fault.
