Alabama Horse Talk recently covered War Horse-Birmingham, the broadway show scheduled to play at the BJCC Concert Hall March 18-23, 2014. On the morning of opening night, the media got a chance to watch "Joey" meet a real, live, police horse, to take photos, and to film. I don't know horses, but the police horse is highly trained not to respond to different situations like this. Loud noises, crowds of people, traffic, and a lot more. At first the real horse was curious and sniffed the puppet but afterwards he didn't care.

That's where you're wrong. I know you haven't had a lot of experience with horses but if you had, you would notice the body language shows interest and curiosity. The training is called bombproofing. This means the horse will not be afraid of these situations, kick or bolt off. However, this does not mean that the horse can have feelings and emotions. They seemed to get on well and became good friends.

Kathy Collins Don't mean to sound rude but it's called a bridle and the police officers horse has reflectors on the bridle (making it look chunky) and the bridle also has protection on it so if someone tries to shoot him in the head the bridle can protect it (in a way)

'Course real horse knew it was fake. Smell and small body language signs play a big role in equine communication. You wouldn't be fooled by a puppet, right? Despite it looking (kinda) like a human, moving in a human-like(ish) way and even talking to you.

Kathy Collins Aight bud. Let's say I'm not a painter, but I go to an art show and start telling amazing artists how to do their jobs and saying their work isn't that good. You'd probably be confused and irritated, that guy doesn't paint! Why is he giving painters tips when he doesn't know anything about art? Well. You just did that to yourself just now, buddy. That horse's attire was entirely practical. Most horses used on duty like that have a check reign, even. That horse hardly has any 'straps', just a simple bridle on.

Mmmm... I only saw bad comments (? (sorry for the bad English). But if someone looked "War horse" the film(a very good film :3). The horse they used was that one... In some scenes and some horses really get confused (it's truth that sometimes they know its not real).

The film War Horse, came after the book and the play....in the play Joey is a puppet. which is one of the reasons why it did so well.

I’m glad the white horse knows the other horse was not real. If I read some comments here, it looks to me that some people didn’t know that the other house was not real, although it behaves unnaturally slow and also has 8 legs. as well as they do it, they need to watch real horses being led around more often. they hind end is off just enough to make it look odd but the rest are pretty good. My horses would have vacated the immediate area if they saw that coming and they get buzzed by helicopters and airplanes lol I really do like the idea and the work put into this horse is just wonderful. Remember, hind foot lands in front foot print when they w/t/c. keep up the good work.

Sharon Nahwegahbow its really impressive though considering the puppeteers aren’t talking at all, the hind has to follow all the hearts movements as the mind and heart are improving. It really is beautiful isn’t it? I agree it’s so amazing.

It was first a book that was later adapted to a play. Joey is a Hunter draft cross. The play had the horses as puppets and this is Joey's puppet. They later made the movie using real horses.
