War in Ukraine: Germany's old Gepard tanks are shooting down Russian missiles and drones

Germany decommissioned them years ago, but its Gepard anti-aircraft tanks are now back in action in Ukraine.
The vehicles are effective against the barrages of air attacks by Russia, with the Kremlin being more than a year into its full-scale war in Ukraine.
Crystal Goomansingh was granted special access to the life-saving vehicles that a team of soldiers are using to take down Russian missiles and drones.

Old, yes, simple, no. Even though the actual basic mechanism is "simple" the interconnectivity between searching radar, tracking radar, fire computer, and turret/gun movement is far from simple. To this day the Gepard is the tank with the highest traversal speed for turret and guns, bar none.

The hardware (tank chassis, turret, guns) is old but the all important software (computers, radars, communications etc) was fully upgraded in 2005. Only a few years before the Gepard was mothballed.

It's great to see these old warhorses back from retirement to fight to protect Ukraine from air attack! As a farm boy who now collects old tractors, I feel that machines have a soul all their own. If that's true, imagine the joy experienced by the old Gepard when it finds it's still needed!

It is an old warhorse, but it was bleeding edge technology when it came out, each new Gepard cost as much as four Leopard 1 tanks at the time. And it received again what was then state-of-the-art technology when it received a deep upgrade in the 1990s: two different radar systems, a 32bit fire-control computer for it's novel FAPDS airburst ammunition that measures everything from the exact speed of the shell in the barrel to it's temperature to fire it so it explodes exactly where the target will be. It is even formidable when it has to defend against attacking ground units:

The modern stationary version is called Mantis and the mobile new version is called Skyranger. Some reports say there are already a few Skyranger in Ukraine right now. Haven't seen a video that confirms this though.

Can’t believe we scrapped 200 of those beauties right after all but abolishing the ground troops‘ air defense. For scrap metal. Makes you think some pencil pushers in the BMV are about as competent and fond of the military as Pistorius‘ predecessor. If it wasn’t for KMW, buying at least a hundred or so, we‘d all still scratch our heads as cheap Shahed 136 moped-drones would be laying waste to Ukraine. I guess that’s why DefSec Pistorius is now the most popular politician in the country. They were taken out of service because they were not effective against most modern air threats. It's the new types of threats like low flying, slower drones that really give it a renewed relevance in this war

@@NoConvict From what I understand the Puma is salvageable, i.e. nothing fundamentally wrong with propulsion, armor or main weapon station. I’m sure they’ll make it work, but in the long run they might be better off slowly migrating to KF41 Lynx and Boxers. It takes time, but since Pistorius took over I’ve seen nothing but positive developments: new tank production, European Sky Shield, faster procurement, re-introduction of a comprehensive air defense system (Skyguard, Skynex, Iris-T SLS/SLM, Patriots, Arrow III), investment in stockpiles, spares and maintenance, new partners (🇳🇴🇺🇦), expansion of production capacity, etc.

​​​@@hisredrighthand5212I'm not German, but increasingly feel the need to defend Germany. It's weird. For helicopters and cruise missiles NATO has plenty of AA options. But firing a 100k AA missile at a 20k drone is self defeating. That the Gepard can take down a drone with less than $100 worth of ammo is what makes it essential. However, nobody predicted the importance of military drones. That only emerged during the Ukraine war. The Gepard was retired a decade ago, before any of this. I don't think it's fair to blame "German Pencil Pushers" for that decision. Nobody without a crystal ball would have known better. Moreover, Germany now relies on the Rheinmetall Sky Ranger to do this job, a much more modern design that is much much cheaper to operate and maintain. I don't think Germany made any mistakes here, at least not beyond the typical one of just not being able to provide enough quickly.

The Gepard is outdated for its intended role as a SPAAG. However, as an anti-drone/anti-missile system it seems to work just fine, very reliably, and for a much lower cost per destroyed target than any missile-based AA system. So it seems munitions-based AA systems aren't as outdated as all militaries believed two decades ago.

Modern long range radar systems have got problems detecting small low flying drones mostly made of carbon-fibre plasic not metal. But a Gepard "short" range Radar can even detect a bird and can shoot it down....

German minister of defense regrets the decommissioning of Gepard. In comparison to an patriot missiles the shot down of a drone with a Gerard is much cheaper. Plus near the frontline Russians use jammer to to deflect anti air missiles. But a Gepard is still operable under these circumstances. Unfortunately, the Russian combat helicopters are also an insoluble problem for the Gepard.

Offenbar soll der Skyranger 30 in Zukunft die Nächstbereichsflugabwehr des Heeres übernehmen. Aber die Systeme sind verwandt. Beim größeren Bruder Skyranger 35 sieht man das auch optisch. It needs commenting: the pronunciation of Gepard is on the 2nd syllable. Ge-PARD. Also, Germany names its Tanks and Fighting Vehicles after the Pantherine, Tigers, Lions, Jaguar... Ergo the Gepard is in english, Cheetah. Cheetahs are rather docile compared to other Wild Cats. But Cheetahs are wild and you should never, try to engage or even touch one. This is important for your own safety. Russian Missles and Drohnes should be aware.❤😂🎉

No, this is close air defence, particular to shoot down drones, low flying cruise missiles and to protect mobile units from aerial attacks. The bulk of the missile and long range air defence is accomplished with the Patriot System, delivered from different countries and Iris-T SLM, a shiny new system from Diehl-Defence (Germany), who also made the infamous SMArt 155 artillery shell used in Ukraine as well.

This is a nice report, but Ukraine has a SHOCKING lack of heavy and smart drones like the Russian Lancet that is devastating Ukrainian tanks and armor in every part of the frontlines. Why the West is not capable of producing drones like Lancet or Shahed -136 and Shahed -238 that is about to introduced to the frontlines by the Russians?
