The Russian invasion that began a year ago has left an indelible mark on Ukrainian society. The Russian language is slowly losing ground to Ukrainian, a fact often used by President Vladimir Putin to justify the invasion. Ukraine’s culture including literature, music and art are particularly affected by the growing phenomenon of de-Russification. FRANCE 24 reports from Odesa, a coastal city in southern Ukraine, where Russian language and culture are deeply rooted.

As an Indian whose family existed throughout the decades of war with Pakistan. I am… actually shocked by how far these people are going. They banned…. Russian music? After 1991? Like…. Even during the Indo pak war Bollywood was still popular in Pakistan. Another thing. You can be fined for writing stuff in Russian… Which would be considered ridiculous or impossible during the Indo Pak war, Its like banning people from writing Urdu in India despite 72 million reading and writing it. Its a very bizzare concept to me.

There are reasons why Crimea and Donbass abandoned Ukraine, and it wasn't any shift in attitudes in Moscow, but in Kiev.

True.Due to this, Russia will have to take the whole black sea coast and its Russian population. Odessa was founded by Catherine after Russia took the coast from the Turks. Ukraine is a failed attempt at creating a mono-ethnic state yet the land is very diverse. This has good intent behind it. One concerning thing would be revisionism and pretending something never happened. Also, yes, menus, government documents etc should default to Ukrainian but also (and I almost assume they'd do this) have options for other languages which would include not just English, Spanish, German, Mandarin etc but also Russian. People tend to not learn languages that well later in life. Not that they can't, but it's not something that happens often. My own mother in law doesn't speak English and she probably never will at her age, despite living in an English speaking country. In the US, English is definitely the standard language but in some areas, there is often a section that is translated into Spanish, especially in southern states. I can feel for the older Ukrainians that are against the invasion but speak only Russian. They'll probably speak it to the grave. This is something that doesn't change overnight but takes a few generations to change.

Understandable. I wonder and worry, though, about the future that awaits Odesa Oblast in SW Ukraine, a region that, like the nations that closely border it (Moldova, Romania), is comprised of many, many fragmented cultural and linguistic groups scattered into villages, owing to the many centuries of conquest by this or that power. Basically, it is a mini-EU that would suffer greatly if it were to undergo strict Ukrainization, including a curious splinter group that speaks old Russian and is not part of Putin's cadre. It deserves to remain the charming and fascinating place it is.

I‘m learning Russian just for hobby but it does not mean I support Putin. I‘m fully supporting Ukraine. The reason why I‘m learning Russian, is, because Russian is the most spoken Slavic language and is widely spoken all over the post-SSSR countries, and I like Russian classical music and literature. However, I can understand that Ukrainians don’t want to speak Russian anymore so when I speak with them I usually use English. But an Ukrainian guy told me that I shouldn’t learn the language of terrorists and learn Ukrainian instead, it was just too much for me. I was not speaking Russian with him, I’m not living in Ukraine. Russian is the language of Putin, that‘s true, but it‘s not only spoken by Putin but also a lot of people even outside of Russia. Likewise, German was the language of Hitler, English was the language of Americans who persecuted Native Americans. If you only want to speak „innocent“ languages, you cannot speak any major languages…

Word-for-word total accuracy in translations is hard. Fellini (allegedly) said "A different language is a different vision of life". Putin understands this, called Trump яркий (yarkiy), usually translated as "bright" but the context is visual, so "vivid", "glaring" etc. are also good. Trump took this accurate translation to mean "clever".

Decolonising the country is very important for the future of Ukraine and its people. Before lecturing Ukrainians, foreigners must remember that Ukraine had no problem with the Russian language after gaining independence from the USSR in 1991. The majority of Ukrainians elected Volodymyr Zelensky, who also speaks russian and did TV programmes in russian language. So why are they all changing that now? Because the russian federation abused that trust, placed russian assets in key power positions in Ukraine, used the fact that Ukrainians accepted russian speaking in their country as one of the reasons to invade it, and tortured, raped and murdered Ukrainian-speakers in Ukraine. Ukraine has tried to be inclusive of russian language for 30 years, but they got invaded because of that. That experiment has clearly failed. Now, it is time to leave russian language and history in the museums. The future of Ukraine is Ukrainian, and what a wonderful language and culture it is too. Slava Ukraini!

From Soviet literature and documents on the strategies of subversion & population control, the Soviets banned religion and made Russian the main language yes, but people use that to push the narrative that Russia has been the ones opressing the other nations, completely and utterly ignoring the fact that a German led Bolshevik Communist regime that destroyed the Russian country and system taking over with the Russians attempting to stop said take over, that failed, occured in history, very conveniantly left out, and then the execution and genocide of Russians who resisted the new Soviet/Bolshevik takeover. These people are legitimately ignoring this part of history.
