Other great Iron Maiden songs that talk about war are Where Eagles Dare, Aces High, Afraid To Shoot Strangers, Brighter Than A Thousand Suns, For The Greater Good Of God and Lord Of Light.

You should have a listen to the whole album from 2006, A Matter of Life and Death, arguably their best and an album dominated by war/religion and religion/war themes. These Colours Don't Run, Brighter Than A Thousand Suns, For the Greater Good of God, Lord of Light, and The Legacy all stand out, along of course with this song.

There's a key difference from early Iron Maiden songs from the 80's and later Maiden songs like 'The longest day' in 2006 - the progression of the music and Maiden's embrace of longer, epic songs to match their developing technical skills... in contrast to shorter, catchier songs that defined their 80's career. Iron Maiden tried to release catchier singles on later albums ... songs like 'Wildest dreams'... 'Different world' ... 'Speed of light'... etc. but they sounded more natural on their longer tracks that the fans loved hearing live - 'The red and the black'... 'The reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg' ... 'Blood brothers' ... 'Dance of Death'... etc. One of Bruce Dickinson's biggest accomplishments w/ Maiden was the epic song 'Empire of the Clouds'... which is 18 minutes long and an amazing song written about the British airship R101 that crashed in 1930, allegedly bigger than the Titanic in size and length (This was before the Hindenburg airship disaster in 1937 which was captured on film; the R101 disaster happened in France in the dead of night and only the ship's remains were photographed)

Grew up on Maiden. Pivotal band in my life. I sorta checked out after Seventh Son. Bruce is singing his heart out, relating the horror of war through the soldiers who fight them, but overall the song as a whole--the riff, melody, chorus, builds & breakdowns... isn't expanding their sound or doing much for me. Recently heard Nicko is in poor health. If Bruce and Steve are the heard and head, Dave , Adrian, Jan, the muscle, Nicko's been the blood ever since Piece. Hope he's on the mend.
