The beginning drum taps are actually “SOS” being played over and over. Sabaton did a song about this battle as well called “The Price of a Mile”.
@Seth-fg4ho
@Seth-fg4ho 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Don't think it's SOS. Common SOS is DOT DOT DOT... DASH DASH DASH... DOT DOT DOT. He's playing something like DOT DOT DOT DASH...DASH DASH DASH... DOT DOT DOT DOT, then drops the last two dots on the second phrase (depending on how you choose to break up the rhythm.) "Price of a Mile," though... good song! These tracks that focus less on the glory of battle and more on the devastation are always very effecting. "Unbreakable" is moving as well.

Andrew Ludwig every song about war etc. has this comment about the drum beat meaning SOS.
@andrewludwig9251

thomas skeffington Adrian Smith himself said that it was his idea to add the beginning cymbal taps as SOS - I was just mentioning what I read, I didn’t make it up. Why would I? No good reason to.
@Seth-fg4ho
@Seth-fg4ho 5 жыл бұрын
@@andrewludwig9251 Oh, I'm not accusing you of making up anything. I never said you were intentionally lying, and I don't think you are. And you probably did read that exact interview. I'm just saying that whatever Nicko ended up playing isn't SOS. Check out the charts if you'd like (maybe it's German Gerke code or something?) When you posted the comment, I thought you might be right, so I went back and gave a closer listen. I don't know; maybe when they were recording they decided the SOS code wasn't musical enough and changed it up. I suppose it is, at least, a similar pattern. I do think it was meant to resemble Morse, and it was highly important in WW1. Anyway, just exploring the song composition. Not looking to attack you. Sorry if it came off like that.

My Dad was a veteran of world war 2 and a proud member of the British Legion until the day he died at 90 years old. My gradfather was one of the lucky survivors of world war 1, having been invalided out after suffering from a poison gas attack at the age of 17, which affected him for the rest of his life. So this song affects me on a deep emotional level and your very respectful reaction is very much appreciated. I will be watching this video again on remebrance day here in the UK. November 11th.

My great great grandfather was KIA in the Battle of Passchendaele, during a smaller engagement at the Battle of Langemarck on 17th August 1917. 56 British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Irish and French divisions attacked the German lines hoping to break their supply lines, the Battle of Passchendaele was more like an operation during the war rather than a single battle (it took place for most of the second half of 1917). Approximately 80 German divisions managed to hold off the allied attacks, but could not counter-attack effectively due to the devastation the attacks had created (far too much debris/mud/barbed wire/corpses littered everywhere).Deaths on both sides totalled almost 600,000 in only just over 3 months of fighting.

And the main thrust up the coast was cancelled.

It probably would have been better if the Brits hadn't done their traditional artillery bombardment beforehand. Passchendaele was pretty dry and level before the battle, but a Dutch soldier warned senior British officers that an artillery barrage would destroy the polders (levees) and flood the ground, turning the whole place into a clinging, muddy morass. So it was written. So it was. The response was pretty much, "But we _always_ start offensives with an artillery barrage.!" I am a Brit, and I'm proud of what my country's youth did for us in 1914-1918, and I don't buy the generalised "lions led by donkeys" trope, but this was a military fuck-up, rich and royal. I'm also a time-served Maiden fanatic for 39 years, ever since I saw them on the Killers tour in 1981> This isn't the first or doubtless the last time that Maiden have dragged a tear from me.

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields."

Seelenwinter 666 you’re so clueless. If it wasn’t for America, the entire world would be taking each other over. More wars would happen. When the Russians and Americans defeated Germany in 1945, we kept Russia from taking Germany over. We kept North Korea from taking South Korea over. America doesn’t start wars simply because we want to kill everyone. That it the most ignorant statement I ever heard! You’re extremely uneducated on anything America

You guys live in Florida. The company I worked for had a training facility in Boca Raton, or as I call it, the southernmost point of NY. I went every couple of years for training. It always seemed to be summer when they sent me and it was humid as hell. When Adrian Smith rejoined the group, they decided to keep his replacement, Janick Gers, and go with three guitars. Their sound became more progressive after that. Excellent choice for Memorial Day.

I have been reading about this conquest. It actually occured without American involvement in Belgium. The Battle of Paschendale was actually several battles but is mostly recounted as starting with the 3rd beginning the last day of July, 1917 and lasting into November. Three days in torrent rains bogged down the entire area, tanks became immoble and soldiers drown. It was the worst season in Belgium for rain in a generation. Surviviing units could not move and were often prone, defenseless to opposing troops. At least a half a million died on both sides during this stretch and estimates go from there to 850 thousand. Years later even the British Prime Minister stated no thinking soldier can continue to apologize for it. It's brainchild, British General Haig, was haunted by it in his legacy. He endeavored to the siege because he was feeling large after taking a crucial bridge but hence has been deemed the worst general of The Great War. The only reason Britain agreed to the Haig plan was that they didn't know what else to do. So people just died in a battle of attrition at a rate of 2100 per day for freaking months. This was easily the most brutal and dire extended episode of World War I. Sorry to go rogue on the channel. Really appreciate you reacting to this song. You did a good job.

There is no honour in war. The onslaught of wholesale, indiscriminate murder honours no one. Life is sacred and should be upheld with the highest of honours. The bringing of life into this world is very hard and very rare. But, the taking of life is so simple, for it has no respect for the bringing of life into this world. It is for this reason womanhood is respected, the bears of life. When will we a a species learn to set aside our differences, or arguments, an anger and work towards the common good of all? Iron Maiden just gave us a hard cold slap of reality, member the lost of life in hopes of never repeat the same mistake again.

A good song, but I do not agree with you. There can be individual honour in war where someone refuses to go beyond a certain point, where someone knows and does what is morally right. There are countless examples, and you dishonour them with trite generalisations. On the contrary, it is simplicity itself to begat a life, and the bringing of life into this world, rather than rare, is as common as grains of sand on a beach. Go ask the Chinese - if you dare travel there. I know a fair amount about the first world war battles, and others, from Kadesh to Mount Pleasant, as do millions of others, so I have no idea why you think IM gave us all a hard, cold, slap of reality with this song. What were you thinking? That Paschendale was lads picnic until IM informed you otherwise with this song? I always knew about the terrible British, Canadian and German casualties at Paschendale. I also know about Verdun. No cold, hard, slap of reality needed. Wars on that scale will never be fought again; there is not the industry to support it anymore. There is no common good, apart from ridding ourselves of a certain virus from China.

Amazing to me that these men came back and were so many damaged but they all hid it ...didn't talk about it...buried it....they were different back then

Enjoy the July show in Sunrise Fl. Check out the set list and you will see that the songs are group by subject such as war and religion. The legacy of the beast tour is a retrospective show off many old songs from the 80s and 90s. A Maiden show is a mind blowing experience

For somber Memorial Day, Battle of Passchendaele, battle went from July 1917 to November 1917 near the village of Passchendaele, Belgium. Both sides' losses are from 200,000 to 400,000 in 3 month period.

Its a song about man basically. "Man is at his very best and his very worst within one minute during war,and it is accepted"

When you listen to Iron Maiden, especially the longer songs like Alexander the Great, Paschendale, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Seventh Son etc, it's like reading a story whereby the music takes you right into the thick of it and you feel part of it. That to me is the definition of musical greatness, this band do it time and again, effortlessly. It's just a shame that despite we the people knowing that war is futile, governments and politicians worldwide have yet to heed the message.

I want to suggest a couple of songs. Sabaton's "The Price of a Mile" is also about Passchendale. That and this song both inevitably bring me to tears, every time. My great-great-grandfather was injured by a Mustard Gas shell at Passchendale. I never actually met him, but there's a bit of a connection there for me. I'd also like to suggest Iron Maiden's "Afraid to Shoot Strangers". The lyrics aren't long, but they talk about both the horror, and the necessity of war, and why wars have to be fought. I don't want to spoil the lyrics, but I think you'll find them meaningful.

Dear Kel and Rich, a beautiful reaction to a great song. You should definitely react to either "The longest Day" or "The Legacy" by Maiden. One is talking about the d-day landings on Normandie beach, a story thats garanteed to give you goosebumbs, the other talks about the idea of war, how many leaders etc. almost want's it to happen, while not thinking about those who participate. Keep up the good reaction work, some of the best on KZbin.

Was a bloodbath fought over what was a field of mud. Prob half a million Germans and half a million British soldiers died and were wounded fighting for what was a hellhole. What a waste of young men. Maiden nail the feel of that pointless bloody battle perfectly. The part where they are waiting to go over the top is amazing.

Isn't depressing how we never learn. The German High Command in World War One called the British troops " Lions, led by Donkeys (their generals)". As a species we have the worst record of mutual genocide of any on Earth. This song makes me sad, have we not learned a better way in the last 100 years. Can't fault Maiden for their musicianship or story telling ability, it's good to have your conscience poked once in a while. As Churchill put it so well, "For evil to triumph takes only good men to forget". Or as Woodrow Wilson said, "Love is the only glue that will hold the world together." 2 World statesman who saw clearly. Peace and love to you both.

My great grandfather Charlie Blackwell ran away to join the British army at 15 (illegally) in World War One. He came back and raised my great uncles, who all became milkmen with him in North London. Charlie was even Dame Vera Lynn's ("We'll Meet Again") milkman. Another great grandfather wasn't so lucky. He drove a Red Cross ambulance and was affected by gas and what we now know as PTSD. Another great anti-war song is #Don't Wake The Lion (Too Old To Die Young) by #Magnum

The battle of Passchendaele or the Third of battle of Ypres as some call was an offensive launched from July 1917 to November 1917 and was an attempt by the British to breakthrough the German lines and push the Germans away from the Belgian town of Ypres which the British had been clinging onto for 3 years at an enormous cost in blood. The offensive stalled amidst some of the worst conditions men have ever fought in. Conditions in which men, guns and even horses sank into the mud and were never seen from again. By the end of the battle the British had failed to break through the German lines but succeeded in taking the village of Passchendaele. The cost to both sides was enormous with estimates for each sides losses anywhere between 200 000 to 400 000 each. Despite all this effort the Germans would recapture Passchendaele the next year as part of their giant spring offensives campaign.
