Actually it didn't cause a big panic like everyone thought. In America only about 15-20% of Americans actually listened to it and police reports that night showed no panics, riots, or injuries related to it. Reporters just made it up to sell a good story.

Only a SMALL fraction of the national radio audience listened to the entire program (and the opening, clearly stating this was a radio play), as the #1 show on Sunday nights at 8pm(et) in the fall of 1938 was NBC's "CHASE & SANBORN HOUR" [featuring Edgar Bergen and "Charie McCarthy"]. When Dorothy Lamour began singing her musical number around 8:14pm(et), millions of radio dials were spinning- and most landed on CBS, almost at the moment the "Martian machine" was starting to "unscrew" its top...

What is truly sad is that in most American households which heard this radio broadcast, there was not one found who could say to the others, "Oh yeah, this is based on that book, by h g wells...", cuz most Americans hate reading science fiction.

It just might be one of the most valuable historical accounts in recorded history. It is uploaded on my channel. A never before released wtc attack video that is a continuous running account. The only such video account that exists. It is a time capsule; it is the answer to the question: what would it have been like to watch that all unfold right before my eyes.. without the media.. just to watch it all from beginning to the end.. in a non-production way. Only one 'Tuesday Morning in September'

...and because there were numerous bulletins interrupting radio programming at the time [due to "war jitters" in Europe], most people took the Mercury Theater's fictional "news actuality" as FACT...and that's why the "panic" happened. By the time announcer Dan Seymour identified the program as a "dramatization" around 8:38pm(et), it was too late.

I know what you were doing, but even jokes have to have a measure of "real" to them. I pointed out that the way the show played out, there's no way it could have been the way you suggested, so it didn't even make any sense, let alone make it to "funny".
@tomhas10

its funny seeing comments saying it was a deliberate hoax, it wasn't meant to scare people! it was designed to be a fake broadcast based on The War Of The Worlds. They did announce it was fake but many people didn't hear them say it which lead to the panic! Its like the old saying "dont believe what you see on tv!"

Baloney. The entire state of New Jersey was pretty much DEAD half way thru the broadcast, and civilization had totally broken down by the end of the story, which included narration by Welles' character. There's no way it could have been set up like that at the last minute. You have no idea what you're talking about, and this crummy 2 minute thing is nothing. The show was about an hour long. A few people have posted it here on YT. Look for it if you want to hear the entire thing.
