5 mins to go, you have the dominant scrum. You get a scrum on the opps 5m line. The opposition deliberately doesn't use the break foot. You get a free kick. Go through a few phases and knock on. Game over. Now you know you could have got a penalty try because of your scrum, but because of the new law you lost the game. Well done world rugby. Well done.

When this happens one day, they are going to blame the coach. They will say it wasn't in the spirit of tye game. I remember a cricket world cup final where the Kiwi's needed a boundry of the last ball to win the final. The Australian bouler then bouled the ball underarm rolling the ball along the ground. Everybody was upset but it was a legal delivery. Obviously cricket cjamged that law to prevent sich a situation in future. So we will just have to wait for it to happen and hopefully it won't be in a WC final. Everybody will then realize how stupid this law change is. They are setting themselves up for this to happen. They will argue it will never happen but when it does you will see the outrage.

The real problem is that ball in play is only complained about when the Springboks win. When the ABs won against Ireland in the quarter finals, nobody complained about ball in play. Yet the ball was less in play than in the final but then everyone lost their freaken minds about ball in play

@@hanlens_on_hiatus Why not? France was kicking the ball in that corner, the Boks were kicking it back. The French forwards weren't chasing, they were just parking off in the middle of the field watching the ball fly back and forth. Rassie saw this and said: "Ag nee, those boys are having a rest!" So he called a scrum to get the French forwards involved and tired, and it worked. It wasn't about a scrum for a free kick, it was a tactic to get the French forwards mauled and win the game. And it worked, and the whole of France and all their overseas colonies are still crying and I love it!

Scrums take SO LONG TO SET these days. Go look at old clips. I know there’s a safety element but it’s now a bit like kickers having ever more elaborate rituals to prepare. Let’s increase the tempo for setting scrums. Give the big fellas less time to rest. More fatigue. And Tony can get pleasure from the little guys doing their thing.

What I find incredible about the world cup final was that it somehow managed to ignore all the red and yellow cards and still live up to the SA v NZ classics of yesteryear. Down to the wire. And whoever lost was always going to end up visiting the Betty Ford clinic. Cards normally mess up every match in which there are cards. How did the rivalry withstand that? As an SA fan I felt that losing Bongi Mbonambi was enough of a disadvantage to equalise the red to Sam Cane. And there were other things that balanced out, but ultimately... in terms of the rivalry, I get the feeling that we're back to the good old "Winters of Revenge".

There is also the chance that if they reduce the number of replacements that will increase injury rate. Teams will need to rotate their squads more aggressively between games. A lot of downsteam effects that is not entirely obvious

The only issue I have is that if you let the opposing scrum off the hook with a free kick, you can't punish the opposing team for fielding three 7s on the front row. All they have to do is give you the kick every time, and cheese out. A classic example was Australia in the 2000s when their two props were not good scrummagers, but were relatively quick and good at the breakdown. Wales was able to punish them for this tactic by calling for scrum after scrum. I think France did the same.

British Bulldog it is called in Britain. Used to play Split the Kipper at recess, throwing knives at each others feet. In Scotland. Also Shooting Marbles. Dodgeball with tennis balls, they hurt! The best we had was "grid iron" Basicly rugby with no rules inside the gym. Flying tackles the guys in two the brick wall when they running at speed for a try was the best. Always start slow till the adrenalin kicks in (all boys school) I was always amazed at the amount of blood that needed to be cleaned after one small game (40mins) HTS Kimberley

solid show boys. back in school in year 7 & 8 we made up a game called Rumble. after school our form classes would beef with other classes and choose one guy from their class and then rush him, similar to manhunt but you had to handle it and can only rush him for 10 - 15 seconds. weren't allowed to punch his face but was allowed to kick and punch his body, and this was majority of our class. everyone one was a target but was only allowed to happen after school and inside our school grounds. then we had a assembly and our game got banned lmao those were some good times.

Yes let change a law because we called a scrum from a mark where we did probably for the first time in history. What you call appealing is not appealing for allot of people.

Unusual game: in Samoa we played a game called i’iga ve’a or īga ve’a (literally “crying of the ve’a” a type of bird). A group of boys from the village are split into two groups, one group go hide (they’re the birds) and the other group (the hunters) have to capture them. The birds are given about a minute to hide anywhere, sometimes the whole village was in play. No hiding in houses. When that allotted time is up the birds would cry “ī” (mimicking the cry of the ve’a bird). The hunters would then set out to hunt the birds. If all the birds were caught then the hunters win. If a bird isn’t caught then the game continues on. However, in order for the birds to win the game they have to “seek refuge” at a designated spot that was predetermined by both teams. This last part is to encourage the birds to come out of hiding which then speeds up the game. Lots of great tackles were witnessed during these games. Probably not legal by WR standards though lol Two Cents travels: that guard was definitely sent to spy on you 😂

We played something similar in south west Munster in Ireland except it was called Manhunt. The hiding/running team had a letter each and the objective of the chasing team was to extract the letter from each person by any means necessary(usually involved gratuitous violence) so that you could figure out the word that their letters spelt. It was awesome and terrifying. The whole village would get involved and there were certain boundaries. Some people gave up their letters straight away but then others wouldn’t no matter how many people were railing on them. It certainly built character and it sucked being on the running team

back in school, we would play something that was simply called "Boys v Girls". There was a disproportionately higher amount of girls which worked in the game's favour. Basically, there was this old hut that was used as a prison and the girls would try catch us and drag us to the hut and keep us there. It was all simply physical brawn, no tagging and it did naturally result in plenty of bumps and bruises so the teachers ended up banning it and knocking down the hut XD

Agree it's not one to one, raising the ball in play time will increase the popularity of rugby. It needs to be quality ball in play which in union is based on a quality forward pack and set piece. Resets are annoying when they're too heavy but a good scrum battle draws as much of a crowd then watching someone recycle ball all day. They need to back what sets the game apart and stop trying to make it a new game.

I think that might be overestimating how much influence JK has. I remember Bill Beaumont being on The Breakdown years ago and JK asking "why this, why that" - a lot of Bill's answers were along the lines of "that is a matter for regions, World Rugby doesn't have direct control over that" etc. It kinda highlighted how little JK understands the way the game is run. To be fair the boardroom stuff is way above my head too - I prefer to watch what's on the field!

@@TwoCentsRugby, yes, Mark, I was being flippant. Of course, JK was not the only one driving this narrative. Many other NZ pundits were driving it too. It is a movement of sorts, not limited to NZ. And I think that it reached the ears of WR. That is all I am saying. I am going to say something controversial here, but I think that many NZ pundits are so fixated on the NZ style of play (explosive counter-attack, and ball-in-hand) that when this style is no-longer enough to guarantee dominance, then they call for changes in the laws or how the laws are implemented, rather than adapt their style of play to try and be dominant within the existing laws. This has been a major difference, in my view, between SA and NZ rugby in the Ian Foster era. Challenge me on this if you will.

@@dougerrohmer Yes the ground was initially designed around soccer which did not factor in set scrums with over 900kg pushing in each direction which does not exist in soccer. The flaw exposed itself when the Stormers moved from Newlands to Greenpoint where the ground gave away in scrums and was highly problematic in the Lions series in 2021 which saw many unecessary penalties going against both teams. Some synthetic fields have seen front rowers slipping too but has got better as they have got used to it but does not help when wet. The Kings Park Stadium in Durban, DHL in Cape Town and the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha are all very close to sea level so also need to have efficient drainage in heavy rain. Now that rugby is played all year round, the slippage problem has impacted players in Durban and Gqeberha too more than it did before. The laws should cater for accidental play. If there is accidental offsides and accidental or mitigating high hits then there should also be accidental scrum slips.

These days a rugby game is played with a squad of 23, as the demands and the number of games increase, it becomes more important to make sure we do not overplay players, being a physical sport. Most other physical sports have already adapted and use bigger squads, plus they bring on players multiple times, as to ensure that fatiaue do not cause injuries or if they want to play using different tactics. Just look at Ice Hockey, Waterpolo, American Football. Would be interesting to see the injury and attrional rates of players compared to rugby. World Rugby ... nudge, nudge, wink, wink :) :) :)

Cork soccer was banned in my primary school in Ireland. Basically you would take the top off a bottle of coke or something and kick it about and have a soccer match in the schoolyard in the morning or at lunch. One day there was a huge game with all the kids in 5th class (11 year olds) playing. A kid in 4th class thought it would be funny to steal the "ball" and throw it on a roof to end the game... One of the 5th class kids hit him. Problem was, the 4th class kid had a older brother in 6th class who went nuts. He beat the absolute shit out of the 5th class kid. As a man who is nearly 40, that was the worst beating ive ever seen and ive seen a lot 😂 The "funniest" part was, instead of taking the 5th class kid to the hospital (he obviously had a broken nose, fractured eye sockets - his face looked like an Orc), the principal marched him to every class in the school "look at him! This is what happens when you play cork soccer!"

After each world cup the rules will be changed, cause Doctor Rassie will always use the rules to the benefit for the Springboks, which no other coach thought of. Changes will only stop when Doctor Rassie stop being involved in rugby..... watch 2027 there goes the free kick out the door....

A scrum is a key action in rugby which teams play off. Playing off a scrum, gives the attacking team arguably the best situation to make something happen. Forwards all condensed, backline will spread as does the defence. Theres no moment where you will have more space to play with then off a scrum. They promote attacking rugby. If you win a penalty off a scrum, that once again either promotes points straight on the board, or kicking for touch and then attacking off a lineout, so penalties off scrums promote attacking rugby. One thing that doesn’t promote attacking rugby, is kicking the ball off of a free kick, or a tap and go against a fully set 15 man defence. People need to use their brains. The scrum isn’t the problem. The problem is teams that can’t scrum, and resets because of that. Resets slow the game down, resets promote negative rugby. Scrums don’t. If they want the game to speed, then refs should just be more inclined to give the better scrum a damn penalty. If you can’t scrum that’s your problem, it’s not a problem with rugby. If a team can’t throw in the lineout because their hooker is terrible, you can’t complain. There’s so many different and frequent infringements in rugby that slow the game down, why is it that the only one people have a problem with is the one involving nearly 2 tonnes of man bashing into each other? Probably because it’s the Springbok that do it best.

What a load of crap 😂 there are very few linebreaks made from scrums. They’re way less effective than lineouts and they also kill crowd momentum. How can you say they’re more attacking than a quick tap 😭 a quick tap done well, say from a Danny care, a DuPont or Gibson park, is way more effective and likely to cause chaos than a set play off the back of a scrum or a penalty from a scrum. It encourages the 9 to go from the scrum while most the forwards are out the game but also while the backs have switched off for a moment

It´s part of what creates holes in defense and also the strategy of each team are build around them. That´s why fowards exist and train their whole life to master their skills on these formations. Without this formations or trying to bring them to the minimum would actually fatigue the backs that would have to run even more, wich create more mistakes in the long run and actually will have the opposite effect of a fast game. The attacking side would have more of a difficult time to create spaces and to find holes. I don´t think people give enough credit to the gameplay of fowards and the difficulty in it because it looks "slow", some people just want to see them crashing into other players and thats it.

How many linebreaks actually come off the back of scrums or mauls? Very few I would say. From what I see, lineouts are clearly the most effective set pieces for attack moves. Scrums limit you to just backs. Also it’s not just about space but also momentum. Scrums are a crowd killer for atmospheres. If we reduced maybe 1-2 scrums maximum with this new law, surely a bit more ball in play time would tire out props and some forwards just as much. And caterpillar rucks have nothing to do with space as it’s usually the attacking team doing them before they kick the all away. They do nothing for space creating

@@jakeclough8090 From Mauls and Scrums you actually have a lot of linebreaks. Scrums doesn´t limit you to just backs. Not only you can use the 8 to gain metres or the momentum of a winning scrum to put their defense backs in a disadvantage positioning by making them go backwards, also set plays from backs can be done because of this formations. Also it doesn´t need to be the first play after the scrum what creates the linebreaks (or space to kick) it doesn´t end with just the push, once the ball is played you can actually play it to the fowards to bring more people and give more space to the bakcs. Same with mauls (wich is the one that can suck in most players in order to create space) there are a lot of defense break from balls played around that formation (that´s why is a dangerous formation near the ingoal zone. Canterpillar rucks give you options as an attacker, trough kick or to play with the fowards to keep pushing metres and suck in more players too depending on wich zone of the field you are. I can take that redoing scrums can be exhausting but 1-2 scrums maximum? i don´t think you ever played that formation and how easy can be for both teams to ruin a scrum without the referee not knowing how to catch who really was the one side that is ruining the formation. You already have referees after so many failed scrums warning both packs to be steady or be penalized from then on. This formations (specially if you have the dominant pack) serves to strategise backs play (with the fowards that didn´t participate and add more players into the backs line) according to how this formations are played. You don´t really seem to catch the complexity and how much this formations add to the gameplay because you might just want to see backs gameplay without realizing where all starts and how phases brings the "fast" gameplay you want to see from the backs.

No wasting time on scrums then. Lifting in the lineouts were not allowed. A lot of unstrcutured play though. As rules change, you adapt. The ones that adapt the quickest will have an advantage until the others catch up. Same old story through the 100+ years of rugby. The bigger rugby playing countries have a distinct advantage, as we play rugby from when we start to walk. So, changing the rules constantly, is more of a disadvantage to smaller nations who do not have the investment in rugby, where rugby is only a secondary sport. So much for growing the game then

Personally as a hooker, I love scrums, but I have to accept that IRB seem to be encouraging more open play. Saffas gonna hate it but living in a completely non-rugby-loving country, casuals like free-flowing rugby and hate the 10-man game. Scrums might be for connoisseurs but the fans who IRB are trying to win over don't like crash and bash rugby.

Here's the thing. In the stinking NFL, from kickoff to the final whistle it's always 2.5 hours, and sometimes 3. There's endless "commercial time outs". I hate the stupid interruptions and delays. I don't watch any NFL until the playoffs, if then. With Rugby Union, they play. The half times are long - I'm OK with that. They run the commercials then (and continuously with the dreck printed on the jerseys). But once the kickoff happens in each half, I want to see them play. I don't want to see them re-set scrums. If there's an injury, get the player off the pitch *and* *play*. Down with all the TMO reviews! Go with the ref's calls, accept that there will be mistakes. AND. PLAY!!!!

The biggest problem is not the rules or ball in play time. The biggest problem in rugby is competitive games. Super Rugby is boring to follow because after four rounds you more or less know who is going to be in the semi and finals. This year has been a little better and I am sure as a result there will be more interest this year. Take F1, nobody counts the amount of overtakes in a race. If you have a driver and car like, Max with Redbull, Hamilton with Mercedes or Michael with Ferrari who totally dominate, people lose interest. The 2023 WC we had a horrible draw but it also made the comp much more interesting. We had less run away scores. Yes we lost two of the top four after the quarterfinals but almost all the playoff games were competitive. Would it have been the case had the top four played against, Wales, England, Fiji and Argentina? I doubt it. If we can get teams to be more equal in terms of money and talent I think all the leagues will do better and more people will follow the game. The top two teams in the NFL has only won the league six times in their history. Two teams have won it five times, three won it four times and four won it three times. It is clear that they have good competition in their league and one or two teams don't dominate their league. The most competitive games is usually the best intertainment regardless the quality of the game itself. Only the rugby purest worry about about the quality of the game. The average viewer couldn't care less.

Game being slow is a referee problem, not a players or rules problem. its a poor officiating problem, a problem that has been around for a decade now and is just getting worse and worse the more WR's arrogance refuses to acknowledge it and simply just keeping kicking the can down the road with rules changes instead upping the standards of referee training. There are more than ample enough rules for referee's to take a game by the scruff the neck and punish any opposition for wasting time. They just don't. Like they don't police scrum feeds and and and. Its an officiating problem, start, middle and end of the story.
