that screaming you can hear is the IJN and IJA yelling at one another after learning about this disastrous massacre. The IJA will blame the IJN for not providing a suitable escort for the regiment or two of troops that were lost (along with all their equipment) whilst the IJN will yell that it was the IJA that was suppose to support the convoy with air cover. Either way this is a huge loss for the Japanese, and the Hermes, despite being the smallest carrier the RN has, is proving her weight in gold. Post war there would probably be a memorial of her or part of her preserved assuming she survives the war.

Right, I forgot the IJA/IJN beef. Having such poor escort for the IJA convoy is kinda realistic I suppose? The only thing which was comparatively close was the III Reich and its own court rivalries.

@@bjorntrollgesicht1144 if anything the rivalry between the IJA and IJN was actually worse than the political squabbles and backstabbing the Nazi's had, the IJA and IJN outright hated each other and would go out of their way to deliberately screw one another over or withhold vital information and the like, apart from the Allies, they were their biggest enemy.

Well, at least this is a little more historical accurate in the torpedo department. Because the huge faulty torpedos were mainly in the US Navy, while British torpedos worked just fine. What´s not accurate is the damage a single shitty cannon from a freighter can do in comparison to a naval cannon in a destroyer or cruiser, but well, what can you do?

Most effective Swordfish airstrike ever with no planes shot down. Japanese anti-air equally ineffective, yet Japanese merchant marine gunners are incredibly good at the anti-ship firing with the dual purpose. While being also on fire 🔥.

Back then, people didn't understand that warfare, because of railways and industrialisation, had permanently changed and it was less about morale and stratagems and more about maintaining and protecting supply - a notion that alas, died along with the Romans following the Fourth Crusade. It seems that the lessons of the American Civil War weren't fully appreciated by military commanders of the late 1800s, and certainly not by Japan during WW2. Perhaps they thought the Americans and British were pushovers?

@@meilinchan7314 The Japanese thought they would lure an enemy fleet into one gigantic surface action to decide the whole war via a negotiated settlement after smashing up the enemy fleet. Everything else was secondary, although they were ahead of the game on carrier fleets and had some great surface warfare destroyers, their lack of attention to escorting convoys & anti-submarine warfare was a critical failure. Although the US industrial base was so strong it wouldn't have mattered even if the US never built a single sub, they would have just flooded the pacific with escort carriers & cruisers that would have got the job done either way. In the end there was no true surface combatant "final battle", their colonial merchant empire was wrecked by subs. The Japanese were dead the moment they declared war on the USA because there would never be a conditional surrender after that sneak attack, all that would change was how long it took for the US to win. The US winning at Guadalcanal pretty much ensure the US would win the war.

Then at 18:30, you wanted them to swing north, but you sent both course change orders to this one and none to plane 2, so 1 swung north and 2 continued on to drop at a bad angle and miss. (You can see no. 2 and its missed torpedo on the map at 21:34, as you're commenting on "these two Swordfish that turned to the north.")

I guess to make the game harder the Dev made the Japanese gunner dead-eyes who just will not abandon their post no matter what. Even the Merchant Marine has these snipers. Seems a bit silly when a single gun from a burning freighter can sink a cruiser.
