Yep! Although I'm not sure about activating the Leahy's radar even briefly. Just as a quick sweep on the hawkeye was enough to detect the air contact north, the Leahy's sweep might've been triangulated. The Hawkeyes have totally superior coverage to the ships so the ships don't need to radiate. I don't think using the Leahy's radar gave any utility for the risk.

Nevertheless you could still recover aircraft, although you would have to be careful since you only have two wires left, and have to use either the manual ratchet or the electrical recovery system, you could not launch again though, the catapult is absolutely gone, also I'm pretty sure half the hangars are completely gone as is the ready arsenal in the rear hangar, and the mechanic shop has completely ceased to exist. Nevertheless the damage is not fatal, she could recover, as a matter of fact it would likely be surprisingly quick, maybe five months or so in wartime, two or so years in peace time. It did however suffer massive casualties, as I said half the Marine contention is gone, The entire mechanic staff is gone, most of the aircraft technicians are gone, basically every single weapons technician is gone, half the officers are dead and I would be surprised if any of the deck crew survived the 3rd hit. I think the problem with these scenarios is the carriers have zero aircraft airborne at the start of the mission so close to the engagement zone. In reality she would have surveillance, countermeasure, and CAP airborne 24/7 at extreme range to provide a large bubble of air defense. Those bombers were able to get so close because you had to scramble all those aircraft and didn't have time to establish a long range defensive bubble in time.

Yea, and accurately modeling *how* the soviet force knows about the carrier group position enough to already have bombers 400 nm away on a direct intercept course is important as well. In this era, were soviet spy satellites good enough to find and track a carrier group like this? Would have been more realistic if there was a stealthy soviet sub shadowing the carrier group. Honestly though, a scenario like this it would make sense to have at least one or two subs in the general AO, as well as having at least one hawkeye already ~100-200 nm out from the carrier group... the scenario would *start* with the hawkeye detecting one of the bears, and you would assume either a soviet sub or satellite were responsible for getting the initial rough intercept course for the bomber groups.

Depending on what the mod tools and support there ends up looking like, this might actually end up a true successor to the Harpoon II game. Computer Harpoon II was a naval strategy game from the mid 90s that ran exclusively on DOS, and had only map visualization. Because the units were just records in a database with no 3D models or anything, and the game came with a database editor that allowed you to change everything about a unit, people would create their own "accurized" databases or themed databases for the game, with additional weapons, ships, aircraft and sensors to allow for play in alternate settings. None of the naval strategy games with a wide release since then - Jane's Fleet Command, Command: Modern Air and Naval Operations, or Command: Modern Operations - have had the "user editability" to allow corrections or additions out of the box - JFC eventually got mod tools developed by third parties who had to deconstruct the data storage formats without help; and C:MO's devs have also locked down their database and thinks you should submit corrections to them instead of allowing tinkering. (Which is kind of rich since the guy who runs their unit database is an ex Harpoon II modder). If we get to backfill all the stuff that's "missing" from the game ourselves, this will take off like a *rocket*.
@aghressor2 ай бұрын
I'm pretty much buying this game as soon as it is released, Modding is something the devs really wanted to showcase with the game considering that they modded their previous game (Cold Waters) themselves and found a lot of limitations. Hopefully, the mod tools are flexible enough so that we can have USN vs PLAN, complete with all the stealth RCS, EWAR, ELINT, data link, etc. shenanigans we have today.

Not how it works in reality. They take turns turning on and off in sequence. That's to triangulate and keep jammers/ attack confused as the location. Growlers and Prowlers should have already been in the air, two minimum, the rest launched before the cats. 18s in this time would have been used up close and 14s for running out to long range intercept. Wolf knows that so I'm not sure why he did it this way other than a challenge. I also never saw a phalanx, or "CIWS, sea wiz" going off. The eye in sky is not left on in war time, passive radar is not that accurate and just gives general location, speed, and alt. Having the eye on is pinpointing it's location. That's why the call bulldog is made when a weapon system goes active with it's own radar for pinpoint accuracy around 10 miles. Actual tactics and numbers are incorrect but close. I don't want to see the inside of a jail. Side note, Growlers are newer, much faster and way better than a Prowler but not as sexy IMO. Growler's were not made in this time frame.

And the wave of soviet aircraft is just insane. My best result got one carrier limping, one had to be scuttled, one destroyed... And no air wing left. The carnage was tremendous.

Reminds me of the old Harpoon game. 2 sure win sitations. Nato had an CVN (or more impotant f-14 with phoenix missles that had the range to splat down incoming missle salvos) or the sowjets had a critical mass of Tu-22 that cant be interceped by the mix of speed an weapon standoff range. AI behaved strange thogh not salvoing when they had the chance and not sprinting in on afterburner low.
@bartynz84862 ай бұрын
Yeah I'd have big concerns about buying this game if the AI does stupid stuff all the time. No better than Harpoon when the Tu-16's dogfight (with their tail guns) fighters rather than head for home.
@nerd1000ifyАй бұрын
The backfires actually need to stay high for two reasons: 1, the Kh-22 is not a seaskimmer, it is propelled by a liquid rocket and relies on flying at insane speed (mach 4+) at very high altitude to get past defenses, so it wants a high altitude launch. 2) they need to be high enough to locate the carrier group with their surface search radars.

I do not know how the AS-4 missiles are modeled in game, but the real missile uses inertial guidance to get close to the target and the RADAR is only for terminal guidance. So in theory, the Prowlers would likely have minimal effect in the transition phase of missile's flight. Maybe they might have an effect on terminal guidance, but that would probably be hard to coordinate.
@alnotz2 ай бұрын
A very good point, I suppose jamming those is no avail, especially if guided by a Tu-95 or Tu-16 recon variant in mid course. In terminal phase... well. I have no information on what kind of radar they have and never heard about jamming those. Plus, all these missiles had "flock mentality" like SSN variants, so that they were in link with each other.

Wolfpack you have created the classic scenario. Bravo! This game takes me back to the computer game Harpoon and the tabletop minis game upon which it was based. These games were about 30 years ago. So to me Sea Power feels like a long-awaited spiritual successor but of course it’s not. Fun fact, Tom Clancy validated some of his ideas for Red Storm and Red October in discussions with the creator of Harpoon so while Clancy was not a gamer he clearly saw the value in naval simulations to better understand the real world. Which to me is a hallmark of a great game.

That was a fun episode. I think a scenario could be made where due to the damage sustained to USS Nimitz not only have the Soviets stepped up their attacks but as a result she and her task group are in trouble. One of her sisters has been sent with a larger escort to race up and rescue her. Break through a small force that stands between the two. Send aircraft to help relieve Nimitz from the enemy. Rendezvous with the carrier and cover her retreat. I don't think its possible to do all in one mission. But as a small set of missions that would be cool. But thats just me.

Oh man, Red Storm Rising is an AMAZING book. Tom Clancy did so much research for his novels it’s wild how he got all the info. This scene in the book is great. Another favorite part of mine happens in Germany. The Russians are pushing into West Germany and the US drops airborne troops in front to try to slow the advance. Paratroopers take up positions a long a valley and are in the trees on either side of the valley. The Russians had more tanks but the US equipped every soldier with a LAW rocket (Light Anti-armor Weapon) as the Russian tanks enter the forest the scene just describes hundreds of smoke trails coming out of the wood line and all the troops open up with rockets at once. Again, excellent war novel.
