I've noticed that in the mod, level bombing seems to release early pretty regularly. I think the lead percentage for bombing setting in options is too high. (I'd have to look it up again to know for certain) Wolf's had a lot more luck when bombing from a leading vector than a trailing vector, given current settings.

@@TheSquidPro Reading some honest accounts of crews, many were so scared of the flak that they just dropped short or wide and got the hell out of there. Far from everybody was a crazy hero (and no criticism is intended at all)...

@@TheSquidPro Kamikaze pilots also had a very poor hit rate. Mainly because their training was so bare-bones they didn't know how to maneuver in a dive.

i haven't confirmed this but my experience is that if you change speed during an attack run the planes dont recalculate the drop time and that's why all your bombs were short. you have to hit the attack button again after changing speed to recalculate it.

Those magazine explosions really highlight the value of light cruisers. Those 5.9" and 6" guns were designed to blow big holes in DDs, and they really made the difference in this battle.

Wolfpack, if you adjust your speed after starting an attack run without hitting 'attack' again, the Bombers will drop according to their old Bombsight information. That's why your bombers are consistently missing.

Don't forget that once a target is selected, you can press the f key to swing your view around to point at it. Makes things a lot easier when in binocular/periscope mode. It's easier to unstick friendly ships if you deselect collision avoidance. They stay stuck because they're both trying to 'avoid' a collision which invariably involves trying to dodge in the same direction. Also, you can select an entire air squadron by clicking the color flag on the leader. Makes handling larger formations a bit easier.

I dont know if he controlled their rudders himself but that way the ships were pushing their stern into each other.. Would have helped to straighten the rudder out once they slightly face away from each other. When you drive backwards with your car next to a wall and want to steer away from it without ramming, you dont fully turn your steeringwheel either

@@saundersroe656 He kept trying to control their rudders. The problem with the AI autoavoidance is that no matter what you try to do, the AI is going to do what it thinks it needs to do. That's why I said, for those 2 ships, it would have been easier to turn off collision avoidance. E.g. I always turn off avoidance during ASW operations, especially under adverse sea/weather conditions. The best way to do ASW is to use at least 2 DDs: 1 to spot and keep tabs on the sub, and 1 to depth charge. This is because once your attacking DD is over the sub, it'll fall into the DD's blind spot (i.e. baffles), which makes it a lot harder to actually kill the sub and causes you to use a lot more depth charges than you otherwise would. In adverse conditions, your subs will be very close to one another (with about 300 yds/270m) You'll spend more time trying to keep the DDs in line (often losing the sub's position) than hunting the sub. BTW, I'm not criticizing Wolf's gameplay. I'm just a person who's been reverse engineering algorithms for 40 years, so I find a bit of fun in it.

Yeah, planes used to be more proficient back in the days. Not sure if it comes from the game's latest updates, but these dudes would have missed a whale stuck in a corridor. Pathetic and frustrating. 😑

The issue is that he's hitting to attack, then adjusting speed. And unless you hit to attack the target again, to adjust the measures, then the attack will release at the distance appropriate for the old speed and not the new speed.

This is undeniably my favorite current ngaming series on KZbin and I love it when these videos pop up. This may be the best gaming series I've ever watched on here. Easily top 3. The music, while cinematic, *was* a bit too loud, nice stealth fix. 😉 Granted the choice and timing of the music with the bombs falling short was spot on! 😃 The AI is *terrible* at making bombing runs for the player. When you press the attack button, either the flight leader (if making a formation attack) or the whole flight (if attacking individually) all pick a spot on or near the target and attack that spot. But you can *tell* when they are off and it is super frustrating. If you insist on not bombing with manual control, my suggestion is to double check their attack run. Use the chase camera (don't turn with the mouse when doing this!) and the up and down arrow keys to check their ingress vector. If you line up the formation astern and press attack, if they shift left or right, *they are going to miss!* You can press attack again and they will pick a new "spot" to hit. Just make sure it looks good from the chase camera view (Hint: the pip that marks your compass heading makes a great bomb sight with chase camera. Just use the up and down arrow keys to bring it to the correct angle) Once you are happy with the approach vector, then you can allow the AI to pick when to drop. Another time saving suggestion I can give you (since you don't pause when controlling hundreds of men) is to select the entire flight by clicking the flight leader on the color identifier on the left side. That selects the whole flight with the primary unit being the actual one you click. That makes changing formation a lot easier! (down to two clicks once the formation is set). Additionally, you can change some settings in your files to make it so that the default number and formation per flight is what you like (which appears to be four in diamond formation). This is per aircraft type. I would just say that doing this is a huge time saver and is basically saying that you are changing the SOP for that theater. Loved the much improved damage control you are doing compared to early in this series! Look at how much it is saving you with those ships that were looking quite rough, vs how they ended the engagement. Well done. Thank you for the entertaining series. 👍

Possibly Perth's first few full salvos probably clobbered the Myoko in the boilers or engine room! She was then reduced to 7 knots. Your luck there - wasn't too bad.

Im not sure if its just by preference, but so you know, if you Shift Click it will select all vehicles between the first selected and the shift clicked one. So if you select the first plane and shift click the tenth it will select all 10 at once.

The large number of magazine explosions wasn't just luck. The developers of the ABDACOM mod significantly increased the percentage of both secondary and magazine explosions. Remember, that cuts both ways.

I've seen in your gameplay once or twice that you'll have issues with bomber accuracy, or torpedo bombers putting fish in too early/late. In all my experience it seems like the game throws a hissy fit if you try an attack run with a speed different from the starting aircraft speed, so make sure for whatever aircraft you're using you return it to it's original speed before commencing attack

One other thing most of the torpedo bombers you have available (Fokkers and Catalinas) are big slow beasts. If you've crippled a ship you can use them for the coup de grace but they will take losses. Even against stationary targets at maximum range (~1700m) they are so slow they'll get shot down before making an escape. Catalinas (from Denpasar) are marginally better than the Fokkers. Generally I just use both for level bombing from altitude, and only torpedoes in extremis.

Good video as always. You mention that Tromp is too slow, and you`ll transfer her out. When I build my ship formations, I put them in order of fastest to slowest...for example, You wouldn`t have Warspite or Adelaide leading the formation, as every ship would be limited to their top speed of 25 knots. Having said that, my fastest ships at front of formation would have the more number of guns, to chase and hit the enemy ships and slow them for my slower ships to start hitting them....example, my faster front ships would have 2 or 4 forward guns, rather than 1 or 2 each. Weight of fire is important early, to swamp the enemy. Something I`ve noticed previously, Wolfy has O class submarine....My Java version doesn`t, and Wolfy`s minimum distance between planes is 50m, mine is 25. Is there a more modern update somewhere?

Hey I have a tip for bombing, maybe why your bombs missed: in my experience attack speed helps determine aim. The most clear results come from torpedo bombers: if you attack at full speed you will over-lead the target; too slow and you lag behind. I think by slowing down your bomber formation they dropped early, missing short. Now I'm not 100% on this theory but I've certainly had some consistent experiences in my gameplay.

I can imagine the colourful language between the Dutch Cruiser and the Destroyer Captains. Particularly ripe terms - possible from the Destroyer Captain if an Australian! Anything like Captain Griffin or Captain Beaumont. Those two would be difficult enough. ! The Destroyer Captain if an Australian, would be bad enough!

Hey wolf you know that you can put up a targeting reticule for where the bombs will land, and completely manual aim? Was watching another guy playing this mod and he was getting reliable hits at 5000 feet manually aiming and dropping

In a previous series he used that a lot, but it always seemed way too easy. The enemy AI doesn't try to make evasive maneuvers at all.

@@Shinzon23 Well the enemy does have finite limits on warship types. So eventually they run out of heavy cruisers, cruisers, and I think even destroyers after a long time. Yeah the enemy is spammy, but even so his fleet keeps getting larger.

there isn't, but theres mods that add those ships. specifically in the discord theres the Kreigsmarine ships mod and the Royal Navy shipmod. Just follow the install directions and youll be good (the mods are combined about 5x larger than the game itself btw)

I thought that's what you were referring to as well. when doing high alt bomb runs you should only be bombing front to back or back to front, coming from the sides should only be done with skip bombing or torpedo bombing.

I don't know how those planes missed man, they literally had the best scenario to not miss! Sucks that the AI planes are awful lol

To those who have actually played this mod (for a bit), is worth losing 14 planes for 1 heavy cruiser? Essentially, can the planes be replaced (in due order)? Realistically, I would guess not, but game mechanics isn't necessarily that...

In general, not at all. In this mod, at balanced difficulty each plane is 1 eng, 1 fuel and 10 supplies to replace. You get 60 eng & fuel, and 600 supplies per week. Resources are very tight as your ports/airfields consume about 45 fuel/eng per week. So in effect that's basically all the spare fuel/eng for a whole week. 2 CPs is about 5~10% of your weekly CP gain. Unless you've got a specific threat you need to deal with (e.g. having your task force sunk if you don't intervene) then its not worth losing planes to sink ships.

@@doubleskulls Thanks. He seems very concerned about having his ports shelled by those cruisers, which I sort of get, but the deployment of air assets seems...foolhardy at times. But I don't know, I'm watching this series because I can't justifying putting the amount of time needed into the game myself and because I really like alt-history/underdog scenarios :)

First video i look for when i log in. Also play the game. hey wolf try some angled attacks with echelon right and left. 45-90 best angle in my opinion dive and skip bombing are awsome.

The Japanese ships are stupidly strong and the fact that the guns will be facing straight into the water but still landing hits at long range is just ridiculous. That's why I refuse to play RTS games. The AI is always ridiculously accurate and does some impossible things. Like shooting down every single plane you send at them and taking 6 torpedoes then just steam on as if nothing happened. Love this series.
