To be entirely honest, I think the entire Soviet Baltic fleet was worth preserving. Making a dash from Tallinn to Leningrad under constant air attacks and artillery bombardments, then standing in Leningrad with no way of leaving the city all while under air attacks and dying from hunger with canons constantly firing on advancing German troops... Technically, those 'biplanes' are much better than something like an TBM Avenger. They are difficult to destroy (canon rounds won't explode on them since they just fly through the fabric), the engine is air-cooled so it is practically indestructible, they have a lot of lift generated by two wings so they can be pretty torn up and, since they are VERY SLOW, it might be difficult to hit them when attacking on a fast fighter because you will either overshoot them or you will have to slow down and become a flying brick because, for the most part, less speed is equal to les agility for something like a Bf-109.
@Gentleman...Driver Жыл бұрын
@@ЧукчаСКамчатки I dont think this is entirely true. There was certainly a factor of surprise in both legendary attacks of Swordfish bombers (Bismarck and Battle of Taranto). Two lucky hits at Bismarck which jammed her rudder and allowed the Royal Navy to hunt her down. No experienced AA crews on Bismarck, not enough small calibre AA guns on Bismarck, rough sea, fog, etc. And in Taranto lots of the barrage balloons had been blown away by a storm a few days earlier. 2/3 of the anti torpedo nets were missing as well (and the rest 1/3 wasnt rigged propperly), and the Italians were also convinced that the British would attack a carrier at a Greek island, and not Taranto (the British send a spotter aircraft directly over the carrier as an distraction). A lot of the AAA guns werent manned due to an excercise. The ships were sitting ducks in the harbour. The attack couldnt have had a better timing. However, I believe they were used in a very clever way, and it shows that even low tech assetts can be effective if used correctly.
@ЧукчаСКамчатки Жыл бұрын
@@Gentleman...Driver yes, that definitely is true. On the other hand, swordfish did more than those two attacks. That sturdy biplane was a wonderful ASW unit and there is also Mers-El-Kebir and cape Matapan we have to remember about. It is also impossible to compare it to other carrier-based planes because of the extremely unusual conditions the plane operated in. It was used in a theater where no enemy aircraft were present and ships could only rely on AA. In those exact conditions swordfish was definitely better than what the enemy had (I'm talking Ju-88s, those funny triple engined Italian planes, He-111s and all that wonderful stuff)

Engine controls must have been stuck, too. Because she didnt made any attempt to brake. Maybe she wanted to assist the evacuation of the carrier. @davidbuckley2435 Жыл бұрын
@@Caktusdud. If that were the case then Bismarck probably gets sunk during the Battle of the Denmark Strait, or doesn't engage at all. IRL HMS Prince of Wales was pretty banged up by the time Hood was sunk and Captain Leach understandably didn't feel confident continuing the engagement. With Warspite present, that changes the calculation somewhat, Hood's sudden accelerated disassembly notwithstanding. Unbeknownst to him, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen had already received some pretty serious hits requiring Prinz Eugen to head back to Norway for repairs and Bismarck to head for St Nazaire. Bismarck had received a hit to its fuel tanks, causing seawater to contaminate most of its fuel reserves meaning that its original mission of convoy raiding had to be postponed. The problem with your scenario is of course that Warspite was a much slower ship than Hood and Prince of Wales, so it's unlikely that this hypothetical taskforce could have arrived on station in time to intercept Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. Even if some unknown factor allowed an intercept, Bismarck may have noticed the formation's slower speed (and greater numbers) and simply have decided to outrun the RN taskforce.

On your aircraft (especially Swordfish) after dropping torpedoes don't climb. Stay at sea level. One of the Swordfish's biggest defenses was slow speed and staying very low to the deck. It might work for your PBYs too. As far as spawning too close. If you are closing in and no contact. Pull back and reengage for a better spawning position. That might keep Warspite from getting mauled. Loved the action. Good luck with 0-19.

In WOTS going up ASAP is the best action since ascending doesn't slow you down and the plane gets as far from the ship as possible. Since light AA is much, MUCH more deadly then heavy in the game (that's kinda wrong but ok), getting as far as possible is the best course of action
@ЧукчаСКамчатки Жыл бұрын
@@nostrildamusmctavish5542 that's sort of the only way to attack with planes though. He turned off the thing that shows where your bombs will fall on the minimap so he can't (and won't, for viewers' sake) do that cheesy bombing with the minimap. That leaves skip-bombing the only way to actually hit anything since those are planes with one large bomb, not strategic bombers like B-24s or something like that
@nostrildamusmctavish5542 Жыл бұрын
@@ЧукчаСКамчатки, That “thing”, the “bombsight”, is the way that the bombardiers in the planes used to do it, and they generally got “cheesy” results, by missing, but they stayed alive to fly home and load up more. The method takes patience on the part of the player (and viewer) so if you want everything to be Starwars fast, maybe you should continue to watch him coming in low, skip-bombing manually, missing by a mile, and getting all his planes shot down. He got lucky a few times, so that’s his new tactic.
@ЧукчаСКамчатки Жыл бұрын
@@nostrildamusmctavish5542 the bombsight (I know how it's called, my acid friend) doesn't give you a 100% accuracy rate and show the exact position where the bombs will drop. It also doesn't create a magical red circle on the ground (or ocean surface) that shows the exact position of the ship's bridge at the time when the bomb will impact the ground (or the ship) since people didn't invent AR in 1942 yet. I'm also extremely touched by your statement about me rushing the game and skip-bombing everything like an idiot based on... Nothing? I aim while bombing in WOTS and I am perfectly capable of landing a hit with a 2000lbs HE bomb dropped from Martin139 from an altitude of 3300 meters and the speed of 210knots and I find it cheesy and unrealistic. Just so you know, there are hardly any cases of a successful level-bombing attack for the whole war in the Pacific and there is a reason why sinking Tirpitz took 2 years of level bombing half of Norway. On the other hand, skip-bombing, or, better know for me as a Russian as top-mast bombing, scored much more results and allowed Soviet air force to sink ships during those times when there were hardly any aerial torpedoes produced in USSR. If you have anything else to say, please proceed.
