Even the gloves don't protect the recipient, they are padded to protect the hands so you can hit harder and for longer. The old bare knuckle fights often lasted 40 or more rounds because you couldn't punch as hard due to the pain at your knuckles. People often got bored with these fights so they introduced gloves so the fights wouldn't last as long since you can hit hard over and over and knock someone out much easier.
