She was so good with the baby and I loved the way she said it could go in her room because it is obvious that she plans to raise it since it is Andrei's child and she loved him. You rock, Audrey!!

Considering this was 50's Hollywood , the length and complexity of the book... AND Audrey ....this is not bad imo. But very watchable

For all its flaws, and there are many (a critic at the time dubbed it "comic-strip Tolstoy"), it's still a classic. Nino Rota's breathtaking score alone makes it memorable. Tolstoy's daughter was a consultant for the 1956 version and was generally pleased. The best filmed version was the BBC's serialized offering from the early '70s. 17 hours in length.. As to the Russian version from 1968... ponderous, pretetentous and pompous. I was never so bored.

Nicholas? When I read the book I wondered, for several hundred pages, what became of his close friend Denisov. Nicholas visits him severely wounded and ill in a military hospital and then, poof, not another word about him till he's mentioned, as an afterthought, among the guests at Nicholas's wedding. Does Denisov even appear in this film?

I always pictured Pierre as physically resembling Franz Schubert, but much less diminutive.

Ah yeah, Henry James' "sprawling mass of life". I'm perusing clips of this out of morbid curiosity as to what any attempts to adapt 'War and Peace' for the screen would even look like. So far what I've seen appears even more mangled and distorted than I expected, like a corpse in a fun house mirror; but the Russian version does at least superficially appear far less egregious.
