This explains a lot about how my Dad raised me to be. Some people just do not get it, many things are possible when we are equal to the occasion and hitched to a team.

A lesson from Paul Fussell's The Great First War and Modern Memory: when the guns fall silent, keep the soldiers on line and provide opportunities for them to grieve and dissuss amongst themselves what just happened, which brothers were wounded or killed. The worst policy in WWI was to ship shell-shocked officers and lower rankers home for treatment by psychiatrists who never had experienced combat. The same advice applies in mass civilian tragedies after which the first thing done is to separate the victims and send in the counselors.

Tribe should be required reading for NCOs and veterans exiting service. I know a lot of commands endorse it, but it should be required until something better is written.

National service is fine, but it has to be voluntary, not mandatory. Let society incentivize voluntary national service by (voluntarily) rewarding participants with better job opportunities. Let the political parties make voluntary national service a requirement for their candidates, at all levels. Make it a step on their cursus honorum.

I used to think that the world was fairly civilized, and getting more so every year.. Now I see that the US and its allies have barely been keeping the lid on things post WW2. But with so many things starting to boil over, like national debts and economic bubbles, and wealth inequality, and immigration, and religious wars, and isolated dictators making dumb decisions, and environmental issues, and automation/ai taking jobs, etc... I am very worried about the globe a decade from now. I think we are going back to a pre-WW2 type globe with stronger nations trying to grab land and energy by force, weaker nations trying to make alliances with unsavory powers, wars and genocide out of control, coups and rebellions spread like wildfire... Almost Mad Max dystopia. I am not a conspiracy theorist or a prepper nut, but I am stocking up on food staples and security devices and other such paraphernalia....

Quite a bit of good stuff in here. Substitute the word "Vietnam" for "Afghanistan" and the everything still holds. Powerful ideas here. 1st Division, Vietnam, 1968-1969

Afghanistan has for more than 100 years been known as "the grave of empires" (Britain twice, Russia, and then the United States).

“At a minimum, Iraq should put an end to the notion of “nation-building,” especially nation building on the cheap, and to the glib and heady talk of “national greatness” interventionists who we’re prepared to put other people’s lives on the line from the safety of their editorial offices”…Thomas Sowell

I used to be a Democrat, then I switched to Unaffiliated because I was so embarrassed at what the left had become. I wish there were Democrats like this guy in the public eye. (I'm *mildly* democrat, I voted for both Bushes, I follow Hoover and the Goodfellows, etc)
