Great video! San Diego Bay is my all time favorite place to fish. Try fishing the deep channel by the Coronado Bay Bridge. Do it early to avoid the boat and ship traffic. Dropshot and larger baits work great!

Great video! I see most people fishing near Shelter Island closer to the mouth of the bay. That's fine. For sure there are lots of fish there. Many people might think that is the only place the fish are at. They couldn't be more wrong. If you have a kayak launch at Tidelands Park or if you are fishing from a boat launch in Glorietta Bay and use your fishfinder to locate the deepest part of the channel under the Coronado Bridge. This is a super early morning proposition with incoming tidal movement. If you are one of those guys that shows up at 11:00 A.M. to start fishing, forget it. This isn't for you. The boat traffic will be so heavy it won't be safe. The sailboats will be starting to come out like a bunch of maniacs! If you are there early though find the deepest part of the channel closest to the Eastern shore. Get a 7ft rod with with lots of backbone and a good baitcasting reel. No coffee grinder spinning reels and no buggy whip rods! Seriously. Except for very light line there is no reason to use a coffee grinder in saltwater. If you use one for anything other than 6lb test, put it away and get a baitcasting setup and learn how to use it. You will never go back to that spinning reel again, except for light line, believe me. I'm an oldschool guy, so I use straight 10lb-12lb mono line. Tie on a 1/2oz red jighead with a 4" Berkley Gulp New Penny shrimp. Not 2". Not 3". 4"! Position yourself on the North side of the bridge. Keep your head on a swivel for boat and ship traffic 1000% of the time. Big ships come through there all of the time as well as smaller boats. Keep your eyes peeled all the time for boat and ship traffic and be ready to move out of their way immediately. The tide will push you South back under the bridge. Cast out North a long ways and let the bait sink to the bottom. Put the reel in gear with a tight drag. Reel the slack out of the line and let the setup drag along the bottom as you drift back. When the time comes you will need to set that hook hard! A coffee grinder and a buggy whip rod won't get this done. If you feel something like you are hung up on the bottom reel and swing for the fence! I have caught a lot of massive spotties this way. Working that same rig (4" New Penny Gulp Shrimp with a 1/2oz red leadhead) along the bottom in water from 10ft to 40ft I have caught massive spotties, sandbass, sculpin, corvina, way past legal halibut! You name it! This is a real fishfinder setup for San Diego Bay. Also try drop shooting with a 2oz torpedo sinker and a 2" gulp shrimp or a small Zoom Fluke about 18" up the line from the sinker on light line (6lb-8lb test mono) in that deep channel under the bridge. The only thing I ever fish with a spinning reel is 6lb test. Some days you will catch and release so many spotties you will lose count drifting that channel. This is a great place to take the kids fishing in the boat. They won't be bored I guarantee you!

It was interesting to see you fish with the "slow-jigging rod". What make and size of rod is that? Are those jigs 40 grams? I've been fishing mainly Orange county coast and sometimes at San Clemente mothership trips and I love the flat-fall. I love your gear, been a customer for about 5 years. Thanks for the great videos as well. Jim
@WARBAITS4 жыл бұрын
These jigs are very similar to "flat fall". It's what the Flat Fall jig was based on. It San Diego Bay, I fish 40-60g. The rod is rated for 40-100g. I use a few different rods, I had to buy them from Amazon because they are very hard to find.

Does that free floating swivel chafe the braid? How often does that rig get wrapped up, especially on doubles. Im going to give it a go.
@WARBAITS4 жыл бұрын
On this last trip, no noticeable chafe on the braid. I did re-tie after the session. Surprisingly no tangles. I think the key is the off set leader length and different sized head. Also a rod with not much "Whip"

As a 3rd generation San Diego native, and an S.D. Bay angler since the '60s, I can testify that the California scorpionfish (Scorpaena guttata) that we commonly refer to as sculpin is indeed one of the finest eating fish in the bay, and possibly on the SoCal coast. In its heyday, the famed Anthony's Fish Grotto even had it on the menu in the early to mid-1970s. Just be sure to clip off those dorsal and pectoral fins to avoid an unpleasant surprise. ;-) www.liveabout.com/catching-scuplin-californias-scorpionfish-2929299
