This movie was missing about 45 minutes of footage that the studio made Duncan Jones cut for "reasons." The footage allegedly adds a bunch of story and exposition that helps out some of the problematic narratives. Shame we'll never get a director's cut, as Jones is a phenomenal director.

The pacing of this film is off. The director(Duncan Jones) has stated that he did not have control over the editing, the studio did, and they chose to cut it down heavily leaving approximately 40 minutes of film on the cutting room floor. It shows in the final product unfortunately. Would love to see a Director's cut.

There is even evidence that the entire final act was supposed to be a bit more true to the source material. Some of the early posters had Stormwind on fire in the background, as Stormwind was sieged and was actually lost to the Horde in the lore. So sad they did not get to do the true vision as I think it would have been a much better received movie. This was one of those epics that needed to be long with lots of character development and tragic events, but as the director have stated, it was killed by a thousand cuts.
@TheDigitalThreat10 ай бұрын
There is only like 20 minutes of deleted stuff, and it doesn't really offer anything special or that would fix the pacing... its mostly the usual filler or badly acted scenes. Outside the orc campfire banter they offer nothing. It simply boils down to not enough time... They had to squeeze 10 pounds of Azeroth into a 2 pound sack... if they were going to wrap up any part of this chapter of the lore in a 2 hour period, they had to move quickly. Nearly a dozen races, over a dozen locations, dozens of individual characters, and the magical crap, but only 2 hours to introduce it all and flush out the plot, then to wrap it up enough to book end the movie enough to stand alone.

Cuz you are right it was doing everything super fast and not really fleshing it out. It was definitely a movie for the fans who already know these characters, even though many fans didn't like the film. That I think has to do with how some things were changed. Garona is half Dranei. The blue prisoners at the beginning that had their life essence taken from them to open the portal were Dranei. And yes I feel like the movie almost required you to play the rts or the MMO to pick up on a lot of the story points that are glossed over.
@laertesindeed Жыл бұрын
@Kenneth Actually.......Garona was considered half orc and half human by Metzen for both the non-canon books and the canon single player game during that time. What you might be forgetting is that Metzen changed his mind during the life of vanilla WoW when he was tasking himself with figuring out a narrative and story and lore background to use for his upcoming Burning Crusade expansion.....which is precisely when he invented all the interesting stuff that would make Draenei popular to choose as a new player character whenever that expansion would launch. As such, Metzen then switched his own idea of Garona being half human to being half draenei despite her not being blue and having no horns and having no hooves and not speaking or having any draenei type accent, etc. Essentially, Garona's ability to look more like a green human and to speak human languages made more sense in the non-canon books and in the canon game by assuming she was half human. But wait, there is more. This Warcraft movie has many differences from the real lore. Including no presence of Ner'zhul anywhere ever, and Orgrim Doomhammer being in the wrong clan, and all sorts of things. One of those differences is insinuated and hinted and muttered and implied......when Medivh talks to Garona, and his statements make it seem very much to us the audience as if the movie version of Medivh had already traveled to Draenor a handful of years ago. Before any of the events of Gul'Dan shown here. Medivh implied that he was aware of Orcs, and that he had met a female Orc that he loved....and that he wished it was possible to bring some Orcs to Azeroth if it would protect them from extinction on Draenor. Then he gave a rose to Garona...... all implying, according to the script, that Medivh was Garona's actual Father, and an Orc her mother. As I say, that is only for this movie version. That is totally different lore from the Medivh and Garona of the game.....where among other things the non-canon books have Medivh and Garona creating a child together.

And in cases where something gets copied or represented in game which also happened in a book.... "ONLY" the thing which is being copied or represented in game is canon... "NOT" anything else from those books. You are simply totally and completely and absolutely and irrefutably and undeniably wrong; full stop. The end.

Great reaction - I actually really liked how fast paced and full of info it was - not needing to spoon-feed us - I liked that I couldn't always keep up - it made me feel like I was really living in this world, instead of having it presented to me - there was a simplicity that reminded me of 80s fantasy - in any case, I'd still love to see a longer version, simply because I couldn't get enough :) Maybe the best aspect IMO is its moral vision - in LOTR (which I love), the orcs and Uruks, etc are evil because they belong to that "race" - in this film, each character is mysterious and open-ended, reacting to the moment, like the audience, and evil becomes more a matter of the path someone takes, rather than a predetermined inner "nature" - some heavyweight actors, but they only only gave their characters a couple of attributes, didn't try to make them too deep, intentionally going for a surface effect that seems to blend with the spectacle and epic register - this was what I liked so much about Galadriel in Rings of Power, esp in Episode 1, these broad strokes - closer to Homer than to Chekhov - Achilles wasn't complicated - - this film was carefully thought through in terms of its sense of vision - I was hoping not just for a sequel, but that this would set an example for how to approach such material

I think a major reason they went through the plotline so quickly is because there is sooooo much lore involved in the WOW universe and this is basically a prequel to the actual game. They also likely figured that the majority of the viewership would be people who have played the game. Garona is actually half orc and half draenei (the creatures in the cages you saw before the orcs entered the portal the first time). The mount Anduin was riding was a Gryphon. In game it was almost like a taxi to get around places. Though i remember uust how satisfying it was when I first got my first flying mount ooof. So cool

This movie was literally made for the fan of the game, which is why people who played Warcraft and World of Warcraft loved this movie despite some of the changes to the story. Not to mention hardcore fans who read tons of lore books and watched all the videos Blizzard themselves made. People who watch this for the first with no knowledge about the story or games are gonna complain that it moved too fast and wasn't long enough yada yada etc etc. If they tried to flesh out all the lore and background of those characters they would be making dozens of movies at least.

I think the reason it was rushed is because of the pressure of all the remaining storyline. What you have seen here is a tiny sliver of the story present in the games. Specifically it only covers the main beats of original Warcraft: Orcs and Humans game from 1994. Which is not even 1% of what the story is now.

It's really too bad it didn't do as well as it could have, because the actors did great, the effects are solid, and it's a pretty fun movie all around. As someone who loves Warcraft, I loved this movie and didn't mind the errors they made here or there since it just just so amazing to see the game concept alive on a big screen. Here's a fun fact about this movie: At the end, when the crowd shouts "For the Alliance" They recorded that line, using all the attendees of Blizzcon 2014. The movie itself, I feel they tried to do way too much in too little time.

Everything is spot on. I mean, the whole thing took place over the course of months or years, but the movie felt like it covered a WEEK's worth of content. If they actually gave it time, if they took the time to cover the little things along their journey to really make you feel the passage of time and allow for everything to sink in, then this would have been a great movie. I love the orcs, Durotan was amazing in this movie, the CGI looks very vibrant which is very representative of the game itself - I love it. What's missing is that extra attention to detail and time to flesh things out that this movie didn't get.

Yes this was actually a very good movie and a great adaptation of the game, specifically a version of the game titled Warcraft: Humans vs Orcs. The baby Go'el becomes the character Thrall that plays a huge part in later stories. You are right about the rushed story line. I saw an interview with the Director and this was one of those movies that suffered from a lack of budget and production company tampering and pressure to cut and leave out large amounts of story. I doubt it will ever get a sequel although I would welcome one as i really liked it. And although you seemed to think that it took a lot of inspiration from other movies like LotR, it actually just took it's inspiration from it's namesake...Warcraft. Those that are familiar with the games and books will recognize many many references and eastereggs. A good example is the guard being turned into a sheep...a funny and commonly used spell in the game.

The only problem with this movie was for normies it was to dence, for players it deviated to far from lore. All in all though, it was really good.

I wish this movie had more time, and was longer. I also wish that a sequel had been made (or could be made in the future.

As someone that has played the game for years I enjoyed the movie. Problem is, that they made a movie that the elite players of the game wanted rather than a movie that a film buff would enjoy. It's in a way just like the game when they do a big update rollout. It's loaded with content for players like me (solo, quests) but the die hard players only do the raids and dungeons and start bitching that there's nothing to do after 3 weeks. You were both correct, in that they should have taken more time to develop the characters and story line. Thanks for the review!

Nearly every scripted scene has a wink or Easter egg of some sort from visuals to sound effects that's an ode to the game/lore fans. This movie really was made for those fans/players already familiar with the majority of what was occurring, as its just a pleasure to just see it live action. It wasn't made for general audiences, and that was its main problem in getting a sequel/enough popularity to justify one. As for the speed of everything, they had a multitude of books to condense into one film (even speeding through and cliff notes condensing everything) as they had to cover a wide array of stuff/characters ultra quickly, just to squeeze the bare bones of this chapter of Azeroths overall lore into one story/movie that could end in only 2 short hours. If they had been given more funding or gone the route of a TV series or trilogy of movies it would have been much better for viewers new to this universe.

Nearly an hour of footage was cut by the studio to shorten it. Should have been released as a part 1 and 2. The Lich King story line would make an awesome movie series.

@7:47 what you said was truth. Even though, I know the lore, it felt rushed. I knew that people who don't know will think what you said. And rightfully so. @ 22:26 how close you were. We call him "Green Jesus."

This movie was for sure aimed at Warcraft players. Each character was already known to us, as well as the lore. There is so much to WoW lore it could easily surpass Marvel and LotR for story depth.

A diamond in the rough imo. I have it on blue-ray here at home actually. Seen it maybe 4-5 times. As a movie-enjoyer I would still think it is, well what I said at the start. As a Warcraft-nerd it's even more disheartening knowing the potential. The whole universe and lore is almost unparalleled in the medium tbh. And it's super hardcore, goofy, fun, deep and serious all at once. If any pre-existing work that has yet to get a big movie series was to get a saga, it should be Warcraft honestly. Sure I like the Eragon books and the Mass Effect game trilogy as well. But warcraft has more to it than something like Star Wars already. Just adapt it!

You can tell they've never played the game due to them not reaction at 4:38... the murloc sounds straight from ingame. While watching this in the theater, we could tell which of the audience mem ers were players of the game by their reaction when this happened. 😅

This movie was alright. The stuff with the humans wasn't as compelling as it should've been, but every moment spent with the orcs was so enthralling. Good VFX and Production Design but yeah generally speaking, not all that great.
@LordHoth_90 Жыл бұрын
For what it was, the movie is one of the better video game adaptations, I absolutely love it. The thing that really made it suffer is there’s SO MUCH LORE, even for the first game (which it’s adapted from), that a movie just isn’t long enough for casual viewers to enjoy. I think it would’ve faired better as a tv or streaming series (which I think they are doing for the reboot) so the storyline could’ve been mapped out.
@Alfaqwad Жыл бұрын
They were probably unsure of a sequel as video game movies rarely do well. They jammed what they could into too short of a film imo. Underrated movie for sure
